functionally Graded Concrete （fGC） is fabricated at the Institute for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design （ILEK） by using a layer-by-layer technique with two different technological procedures： casting and dry spraying. functional gradations are developed from two reference mixtures with diametrically opposed characteristics in terms of density, porosity, compression strength and elasticity modulus. In this study the first mixture consists of Normal Density Concrete （NDC）, with density about 2160 kg·m^-3 while the second mixture helps to obtain a very lightweight concrete, with density about 830 kg·m^-3. The fGC specimens have layers with different alternating porosities and provide superior deformability capacity under bulk compression compared to NDC specimens. In addition, the fGC specimens experienced a graceful failure behaviour, absorbing high amounts of energy during extended compression paths. The porosity variation inside the layout of tested specimens is inspired by the internal structure of sea urchin spines of heterocentrotus mammillatus, a promising role model for energy absorption in biomimetic engineering.

Bound states in the continuum （BICs） are perfectly localized resonances despite embedding in the continuum ***,an isolated BIC is very sensitive to the structure ***,we report merging acoustic BICs in a single open resonator,robust against the structure *** find that both symmetry-protected BIC and friedrich-Wintgen BIC are sustained in a single coupled waveguide-resonator *** varying the height and length of the resonator,these two BICs move toward each other and merge into a single one at a critical *** to an individual BIC,the merged BIC is robust against fabrication error because its Q-factor is proportional to ΔL-4,whereΔL embodies the structure *** essence of this extraordinary phenomenon is perfectly explained by the two-and three-level approximations of the effective nonHermitian ***,we present direct experimental demonstrations of the moving and merging of BICs in a coupled 3D waveguide-resonator,which are evidenced by the vanishing of the linewidth of fano resonance in the transmission *** results may find exciting applications in designing high-quality acoustic sources,sensors and filters.

Spinal cord injury remains a major cause of disability in young adults,and beyond acute decompression and rehabilitation,there are no pharmacological treatments to limit the progression of injury and optimize recovery in this *** the thorough investigation of the complement system in triggering and propagating cerebral neuroinflammation,a similar role for complement in spinal neuroinflammation is a focus of ongoing *** this work,we survey the current literature investigating the role of complement in spinal cord injury including the sources of complement proteins,triggers of complement activation,and role of effector functions in the *** study relevant data demonstrating the different triggers of complement activation after spinal cord injury including direct binding to cellular debris,and or activation via antibody binding to damage-associated molecular *** effector functions of complement have been implicated in spinal cord injury,and we critically evaluate recent studies on the dual role of complement anaphylatoxins in spinal cord injury while emphasizing the lack of pathophysiological understanding of the role of opsonins in spinal cord *** this pathophysiological review,we systematically review the different translational approaches used in preclinical models of spinal cord injury and discuss the challenges for future translation into human *** review emphasizes the need for future studies to dissect the roles of different complement pathways in the pathology of spinal cord injury,to evaluate the phases of involvement of opsonins and anaphylatoxins,and to study the role of complement in white matter degeneration and regeneration using translational strategies to supplement genetic models.

Background:Despite the high prevalence of strongyloidiasis in the Laotian population,Laotian hospitals still lack diagnostic capacity to appropriately diagnose Strongyloides stercoralis *** cross-sectional hospital-based study was conducted to assess the prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis infection among hospitalized patients treated at Mahosot Hospital,the primary reference hospital of Lao People’s Democratic Republic(Lao PDR),and to validate feasible methods for diagnosing *** infection at hospital’s ***:Between September and December 2018,stool samples of 104 inpatients were investigated for *** infection by wet smear,Baermann technique,Koga Agar plate culture(KAPC),and real-time detection polymerase chain reaction(RTD-PCR)at the Infectious Diseases Ward of the Mahosot Hospital in *** sensitivity,the specificity,the negative predictive value(NPV)of each diagnostic test,as well as their combination(s)was calculated using a composite reference standard(CRS).The correlation of the different test methods was assessed by chi-square or fisher’s exact ***’s kappa coefficient was used to assess the diagnostic agreement of the different test ***:The overall prevalence of *** infections among the study population was 33.4%.The cumulative infection prevalence statistically significantly increased from the lowest age group of 40 years and below(22.4%),to the medium(40.0%)and to the oldest age group of 61 year and above(72.7%)(P=0.003).The cumulative infection prevalence of CRS was considerably higher in male(40.4%)compared to female patients(28.1%),but not statistically different(P=0.184).The diagnostic sensitivity of Baermann technique,KAPC,RTD-PCR,and the combination of Baermann technique and KAPC were 60.0,60.0,74.3,and 77.1%,*** 13 patients(37.1%)of the total 35 *** patients diagnosed with any technique had a simultaneously positive diagnostic test with Baer

first,we would like to congratulate Liu et *** their successful multicenter study including 1,032 patients undergoing robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy(RPD)and 1,154 open pancreaticoduodenectomy(OPD)in seven high volume centers in China over an 8 year period(1).To ensure the best possible outcomes of both techniques,RPD was performed by five surgeons from three centers after overcoming the individual learning curve that was defined as having performed>40 *** the other hand,OPD was performed by 9 surgeons from 6 centers after reaching the individual learning curve,defined as an experience of>60 OPD.

Collagen is one of the most important biomaterials for tissue engineering *** its excellent biocompatibility,it shows the non-negligible disadvantage of poor mechanical *** crosslinking with rose bengal and green light(RGX)is an appropriate method to improve this *** development of collagen laminates is helpful for further adjustment of the mechanical properties as well as the controlled release of incorporated *** this study,we investigate the impact of crosslinking and layering of two different collagen scaffolds on the swelling behavior andmechanical behavior inmicro tensile tests to obtain information on its wearing comfort(stiffness,strength and ductility).The mechanical stability of the collagen material after degradation due to cell contact is examined using thickness *** is no linear increase or decrease due to layering homologous ***,a decrease in elongation at break,Young’s modulus and ultimate tensile strength are measured when the untreated monolayer is compared to the crosslinked ***,we can detect a connection between stability and cell *** results show that with variation in number and type of layers,collagen scaffolds with tailored mechanical properties can be *** a multi-layered structure enables the release of biomolecules into inner or outer layers for biomedical applications.

Bone Morphogenetic proteins(BMPs)like BMP2 and BMP7 have shown great potential in the treatment of severe bone *** recent in vitro studies,BMP9 revealed the highest osteogenic potential compared to other BMPs,possibly due to its unique signaling pathways that differs from other osteogenic ***,in vivo the bone forming capacity of BMP9-adsorbed scaffolds is not superior to BMP2 or *** silico analysis of the BMP9 protein sequence revealed that BMP9,in contrast to other osteogenic BMPs such as BMP2,completely lacks so-called heparin binding motifs that enable extracellular matrix(ECM)interactions which in general might be essential for the BMPs’osteogenic ***,we genetically engineered a new BMP9 variant by adding BMP2-derived heparin binding motifs to the N-terminal segment of BMP9′s mature *** resulting protein(BMP9 HB)showed higher heparin binding affinity than BMP2,similar osteogenic activity in vitro and comparable binding affinities to BMPR-II and ALK1 compared to ***,remarkable differences were observed when BMP9 HB was adsorbed to collagen scaffolds and implanted subcutaneously in the dorsum of rats,showing a consistent and significant increase in bone volume and density compared to BMP2 and *** at 10-fold lower BMP9 HB doses bone tissue formation was *** innovative approach of significantly enhancing the osteogenic properties of BMP9 simply by addition of ECM binding motifs,could constitute a valuable replacement to the commonly used *** possibility to use lower protein doses demonstrates BMP9 HB’s high translational potential.
