A New Stable Version of the SPH Method in Lagrangian Coordinates

The purpose of this paper is to solve some of the trouble spots of the classical SPH method by proposing an alternative ***,we focus on the problem of the stability for two different SPH schemes,one is based on the approach of Vila[25]and another is proposed in this article which mimics the classical 1D LaxWendroff *** both approaches the classical SPH artificial viscosity term is removed preserving nevertheless the linear stability of the methods,demonstrated via the von Neumann stability ***,the issue of the consistency for the equations of gas dynamics is *** alternative approach is proposed that consists of using Godunov-type SPH schemes in Lagrangian *** not only provides an improvement in accuracy of the numerical solutions,but also assures that the consistency condition on the gradient of the kernel function is satisfied using an equidistant distribution of particles in Lagrangian mass *** different Riemann solvers are implemented for the first-order Godunov type SPH schemes in Lagrangian coordinates,namely the Godunov flux based on the exact Riemann solver,the Rusanov flux and a new modified Roe flux,following the work of Munz[17].Some well-known numerical 1D shock tube test cases[22]are solved,comparing the numerical solutions of the Godunov-type SPH schemes in Lagrangian coordinates with the first-order Godunov finite volume method in Eulerian coordinates and the standard SPH scheme with Monaghan’s viscosity term.

Merging bound states in the continuum in an open acoustic resonator

Bound states in the continuum （BICs） are perfectly localized resonances despite embedding in the continuum ***,an isolated BIC is very sensitive to the structure ***,we report merging acoustic BICs in a single open resonator,robust against the structure *** find that both symmetry-protected BIC and friedrich-Wintgen BIC are sustained in a single coupled waveguide-resonator *** varying the height and length of the resonator,these two BICs move toward each other and merge into a single one at a critical *** to an individual BIC,the merged BIC is robust against fabrication error because its Q-factor is proportional to ΔL-4,whereΔL embodies the structure *** essence of this extraordinary phenomenon is perfectly explained by the two-and three-level approximations of the effective nonHermitian ***,we present direct experimental demonstrations of the moving and merging of BICs in a coupled 3D waveguide-resonator,which are evidenced by the vanishing of the linewidth of fano resonance in the transmission *** results may find exciting applications in designing high-quality acoustic sources,sensors and filters.

Correlation between expectations of recovery and injury severity perception in whiplash-associated disorders

Objective:To assess the correlation between expectations of recovery and whiplash patients' perceptions of injury severity using a simplified *** of recovery have been shown to predict rate of recovery from whiplash injury in population-based *** perception of having more severe pathology or more ominous diagnostic labels has also been associated with a worse ***:Consecutive patients with whiplash-associated disorder grade 1 or 2,presenting in the acute stage to a primary care centre,were asked "do you think that your injury will…" with response options "get better soon;get better slowly;never get better;don't know." Injury severity perception (ISP) was measured with a numerical rating scale which ranged from 0-10,on which subjects were asked to rate how severe (in terms of damage) they thought their injury *** anchors were labeled "no damage" (0) and "severe,and maybe permanent damage" (10).The primary outcome measure was the correlation between the subject's ISP score and expectation of ***:A total of 94 subjects (34 males,60 females,and mean age (40.6±10.0) years,range 19-60 years) were *** initial responses to expectation of recovery were:get better soon (29/94);get better slowly (22/94);never get better (11/94);don't know (32/94).The mean ISP score was 4.9±1.7 (range 2-9 out of 10).There was a high correlation between expectations and ISP scores (Spearman's rank correlation coefficient 0.68).Those who expected to recover soon and those who expected to get better slowly had the lowest ISP ***:The more slowly whiplash patients expect to recover,or the less sure they are of recovery,the more severe their initial perceptions of injury.

Development of a symptom expectation questionnaire for minor head injury

Background and objective:Expectations and beliefs are important predictors of outcome following minor head *** this paper,the primary purpose is to develop a simple symptom expectation questionnaire for minor head injury for use in future research ***:An existing database of 179 injury-naive subjects who completed a 56-item checklist of expected symptoms for minor head injury was analyzed to determine which items could correctly identify an a priori case definition of an expecter (a subject who expected at least one of these symptoms would remain chronic following minor head injury).A total of six of the 56 items were found to be discriminatory,and these were tested in additional subject groups against the original ***:from the original database of 179 subjects completing a 56-item symptom expectation checklist,135 expected that at least one of the 56 symptoms would be chronic following minor head *** 135 expecters,however,all chose at least one of six items:headache,anxious or worried,depressed,difficulty concentrating,dizziness,and neck *** these six items,in two new groups of subjects,all those who endorsed one of the 56 symptoms as likely to be chronic following minor head injury (expecters) could also be identified on the 6-item ***:A shortened (6-item) symptom expectation checklist of commonly reported symptoms following minor head injury (headache,anxious or worried,depressed,difficulty concentrating,dizziness,and neck pain) correctly identifies subjects who expect that at least one symptom will be chronic following minor head injury (i.e.,an expecter).

Neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy and pathological complete response in rectal cancer

The management of rectal cancer has evolved significantly in the last few *** improvements in local disease control were achieved in the 1990s,with the introduction of total mesorectal excision and neoadjuvant *** 1 evidence has shown that,with neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy(CRT)the rates of local recurrence can be lower than 6%and,as a result,neoadjuvant CRT currently represents the accepted standard of *** approach has led to reliable tumor down-staging,with 15–27%patients with a pathological complete response(pCR)—defined as no residual cancer found on histological examination of the *** who achieve pCR after CRT have better long-term outcomes,less risk of developing local or distal recurrence and improved *** all these reasons,sphincter-preserving procedures or organ-preserving options have been suggested,such as local excision of residual tumor or the omission of surgery *** local recurrence rate has been stable at 5–6%with this multidisciplinary management method,distal recurrence rates for locally-advanced rectal cancers remain in excess of 25%and represent the main cause of death in these *** this reason,more recent trials have been looking at the administration of full-dose systemic chemotherapy in the neoadjuvant setting(in order to offer early treatment of disseminated micrometastases,thus improving control of systemic disease)and selective use of radiotherapy only in non-responders or for low rectal tumors smaller than 5 cm.

Down-regulation of DPH2L gene during cellular differentiation/apoptosis:Use of mRNA differential display

To characterize the genes associated with differentiation/apoptosis induced by all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) in human lung cancer cells, mRNA differential display was employed. Six cDNA fragments have been isolated, and one of them corresponds to a sequence-known gene DPH2L with unknown function, which was first isolated from the critical region of deletion on chromosome 17p13.3 in human ovarian carcinoma, and regarded as a candidate tumor suppressor gene. Results show that DPH2L is a wide expressed gene, and has another major transcript besides the previously reported 2.3 kb transcript. It is proved that the DPH2L gene is dawn-regulated during differentiation or apoptosis in several kinds of cancer cells induced by all-trans retinoic acid and N-(4-hydroxyphenyl) retinamide (4HPR). This may suggest that DPH2L does not play a role as a tumor suppressor gene, on the contrary, its down-regulation may be functionally involved in the transition from cell growth to differentiation or apoptosis.

Estimation of the shortening rate since late Pleistocene in the Aksu area on the southern flank of the Tianshan,China

This research focused on the Aksu area in the central part of the southern Tianshan. Along the 60 km wide Aksu fold-and-thrust belt, active thrusts reach the surface and offset the youngest sediments. Our research was based on the geomorphologic study that examined the advance and retreat of glaciers cut by thrusts in the Tomur area in the north of Aksu. Our fieldwork revealed that two fault scarps were clearest across three different moraines that represent the maximum of advance of glaciers during three glacial periods along the Tailan River in the Tomur area. The measured heights of the fault scarps that cut the moraines, together with the moraines-inferred age, imply a shortening rate of 1.85 mm/a on the Aksu area since late Pleistocene. This rate, similar to that of the Korla area on its east side and of the Kaping area on its west side, but lower than that of the Kashgar area farther west and of the Manas area in the northern margin of the belt, implies that the distribution of shortening across the Tianshan changed markedly along the mountain.
