Behavior of ductile steel X-braced RC frames in seismic zones

A satisfactory ductile performance of moment-resisting reinforced concrete concentric braced frame structures (RC-MRCBfs) is not warranted by only following the provisions proposed in Mexico’s federal District Code (MfDC-04). The nonlinear behavior of low to medium rise ductile RC-MRCBfs using steel X-bracing susceptible to buckling is evaluated in this study. The height of the studied structures ranges from 4 to 20 stories and they were located for design in the lakebed zone of Mexico City. The design of RC-MRCBfs was carried out considering variable contribution of the two main lines of defense of the dual system (RC columns and steel braces). In order to observe the principal elements responsible for dissipating the earthquake input energy, yielding mappings for diff erent load-steps were obtained using both nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. Some design parameters currently proposed in MfDC-04 as global ductility capacities, overstrength reduction factors and story drifts corresponding to diff erent limit states were assessed as a function of both the considered shear strength and slenderness ratios for the studied RC-MRCBfs using pushover analyses. Additionally, envelopes of response maxima of dynamic parameters were obtained from the story and global hysteresis curves. finally, a brief discussion regarding residual drifts, residual drift ratios, mappings of residual deformations in steel braces and residual rotations in RC beams and columns is presented. from the analysis of the obtained results, it is concluded that when a suitable design criterion is considered, good structural behavior of RC-MRCBfs with steel-X bracing can be obtained. It is also observed that the shear strength balance has an impact in the height-wise distribution of residual drifts, and an important “shake-down” eff ect is obtained for all cases. There is a need to improve design parameters currently proposed in MfDC to promote an adequate seismic performance of RC-MRCBfs.

Nutritional Supplement Ocoxin® Combined with Gemcitabine-Based Chemotherapy in Patients with Advanced Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma

Background: the quality of life (QoL) of patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), with its limited survival, can be affected by chemotherapy-induced toxicity. The main objective was to evaluate the effect of introducing ocoxin oral solution (OOS) in combination with standard therapy on quality of life. Methods: Thirty patients were enrolled in an exploratory, prospective, single-centre clinical trial in the oncology department of “Hermanos Ameijeiras” University Hospital in Havana, Cuba. Quality of life was measured using the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire and toxicity was assessed using the NCI-CTC-AE classification version 5.0. Results: There was stability in the scores over time for overall QoL and the functional scale criteria, while in terms of symptoms, fatigue, pain and loss of appetite were reduced. No grade 3 - 4 adverse events (AEs) were recorded, and only 14.9% of toxicities were classified as grade 2, and these were considered to be unrelated to OOS. Biochemical and nutritional parameters were normalised at 12 months compared to the baseline values. Conclusions: This clinical study is the first report of the use of OOS in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer, and demonstrates that it is able to maintain optimal quality of life with reduced severity of toxicity during and after combination treatment with gemcitabine-based chemotherapy.

Building geometry data from online maps for accurate thermal simulations of districts

Current approaches for simulating the energy performance of buildings on a large scale are limited by numerous assumptions and simplifications,which can lead to inaccurate *** new tools and procedures are emerging to improve accuracy,there remains a need for more user-friendly *** study proposes a new tool based on online maps to create the geometry of districts in a simple *** tool also enables an automatic evaluation of all buildings through dynamic hourly simulations,using a building simulation software and allowing to consider different weather *** illustrate the procedure,a district at risk of energy poverty in Seville(Spain)is modeled,where hourly temperature data for a whole year are available to demonstrate the need for building *** tool is used to evaluate the energy demands of the district under several retrofitting alternatives,and free-floating simulations are also performed to evaluate the improvement of thermal comfort without air-conditioning *** aim is not to discuss the actual values for this particular case,but rather to identify the correct direction for large-scale studies,so as to make them more easily ***,it may be concluded that the results provided by comprehensive tools,such as the one proposed in this study,enable easy yet accurate evaluations of buildings on a large scale with significant time savings,as well as the identification of locations where retrofitting interventions would have the greatest impact.

Metabolomics is largely employed in numerous biomedical research fields,such as the study of the underlying pathology of diseases,discovery of diagnostic biomarkers,or drug ***,the main challenge is to obtain comprehensive and unbiased metabolomic profiles due to the huge complexity,heterogeneity,and dynamism of the *** this end,mass spectrometry represents a very interesting analytical platform,since the complexity of metabolome may be overcome through the use of different orthogonal separation techniques,including liquid chromatography,gas chromatography,and capillary ***,direct mass spectrometry analysis has been postulated as a complementary choice to hyphenated *** technique exhibits several advantages such as the ability for high-throughput screening,fast analysis,and wide metabolomic coverage,since there is not exclusion of compounds due to the separation *** present work explores the utility of metabolomics based on direct infusion mass spectrometry for analyzing blood *** most important analytical concerns to be considered are discussed,including sample handling,comprehensive fingerprinting,as well as subsequent identification of metabolites,and global characterization of metabolomic *** conclude,a brief review on the application of these metabolomic platforms in Alzheimer’s disease research is also provided.

Spatiotemporal variation in the adult sex ratio,male aggregation,and movement of two tropical cloud forest dung beetles

While theory suggests that at conception the sex ratio should be balanced(1:1),this can be variable across space and time in wild ***,studies of the environmental factors that regulate adult sex ratio(ASR)in species with different life history traits are *** capture–recapture over a year,we analyzed the influence of habitat type(forest and nonforest)and season(rainy and dry)on variation in ASR,male aggregation and the trajectory movement of 2 dung beetle species with different life history traits:Deltochilum mexicanum(a hornless roller species)and Dichotomius satanas(a tunneler species with horns on its head and thorax).We found opposite *** *** population tends to be female-biased,but the population of *** tends to be predominantly male,and observed values were not related to habitat type or ***,the 95%confidence intervals estimated were highly variable between seasons depending on *** examining the monthly variation in ASR for both habitats,we found that it depends on the *** addition,male aggregation differed between species depending on habitat type and season,and species movement patterns were closely related to their habitat *** on our results,we argue that comparative population studies of species with different life history traits are necessary to understand the variation in demographic parameters as well as its ecological and evolutionary implications in the face of spatial and climatic environmental variation.

Association of the HLA-DRB1*0701 allele with perinuclear anti-neutrophil cytoplasmatic antibodies in Mexican patients with severe ulcerative colitis

AIM： To determine the association between the HLADRB1 alleles and perinuclear anti-neutrophil cytoplasmatic antibodies （p-ANCA） positive in Mexican patients with ulcerative colitis （UC）. METHODS： Ninety Mexican mestizo patients （45 females） with UC, confirmed by biopsy, were studied. High resolution HLA typing was performed by PCR-SSO reverse dot blot and PCR-SSP. Molecular typing techniques were applied to define HLA-DRB1 alleles. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunofluorescence techniques were used to detect p-ANCA. RESULTS： forty-eight （53%） UC patients were positive for p-ANCA by ELISA and If. We found that p-ANCA- positive UC patients had a significantly increased frequency of HLA-DR7 compared with p-ANCA-negative controls （22% vs 5.1%; pC=0.02, OR=5.2, CI 95%： 1.06-37.82）. Disease activity was scored as severe in 20 patients, moderate in 8, mild in 14 and no activity in the remaining 38 patients according to the Truelove and Witts criteria. Subgroup analysis showed a significantly increased frequency of the HLA-DRB1＊07 allele in 15 of 20 UC patients with severe activity of UC and p-ANCA positivity [100% vs 0%; pC=0.0000001; OR=35]. No significant differences were found between p-ANCA positive patients, HLA-DR alleles and other clinical features such as extraintestinal manifestations, proctocolectomy and ***： The HLA-DRB1＊07 is associated with p-ANCA positive UC Mexican patients.

The management of water consumption in healthcare centres can have positive impacts on both the environmental performance and profitability of health *** tools assist in the decision-making process of managing the operation and maintenance of healthcare *** research aimed to integrate the empirical knowledge of experts in Healthcare Engineering and the historical data from 66 healthcare centres in a fuzzy Cognitive *** outputs of the predictive model included water consumption,water cost,and CO_(2) emissions in healthcare facilities,along with eleven variables to discover the causes and consequences of water consumption in healthcare centres.A healthcare centre with about 12350 users,located in a city that experiences an average of 1100 heating degree days,whose facilities be moderately energy-efficient contributing over 50%with renewable energies is expected to consume 8.4 dam^(3) of water with 32.1 k€of cost,and contribute realising 30.8 ton CO_(2)eq *** use of fuzzy Cognitive Maps for prediction can provide a high level of effectiveness in identifying the factors that contribute to water consumption and in designing key performance indicators to manage the environmental performance of healthcare *** tool is extremely effective in enhancing the performance of the management division of health systems.

Objective:To communicate the presence of adult females,rabditoid larvae and eggs of Strongyloides stercoralis(***)in the respiratory secretions obtained by tracheal aspirate from a HIV-negative patient who was suffering from polymyositis,and treated with corticoids and amethopterin and assisted by ***:The respiratory secretions submitted to the Parasitology Laboratory of the Mu(?)iz Hospital were made more concentrated by centrifugation(1 500 r/min for 15 seconds).Wet mount microscopy was performed with the ***:It revealed adult females,rabditoid larvae and eggs of *** parasitological studies performed after the start of the treatment with ivermectin on fresh fecal samples,gastric lavages and tracheal aspirates showed scanty mobile filariform and rabditoid larvae of the same ***:The presence of adult female *** which has never been observed before in the clinical samples submitted to our Laboratory for investigation can be considered as an indirect marker of the severe immunosupression of the patient.
