Short-Term Outcomes of Two Surgical Techniques for the Treatment of Coarctation of the Aorta in Infants: Subclavian Flap Repair and Resection with Extended End-to-End Anastomosis Technique

Background: The aims of the study were to analyze the importance of two different surgical procedures, and to determine outcomes for neonates with coarctation of the aorta in two newly established centers. Methods: Outcomes of two different surgical repairs for coarctation of the aorta in 43 infants were evaluated retrospectively. The study was designed as a nonrandomized, cross-sectional study. The subclavian flap repair was applied to 22 patients (51%) and resection with extended end-to-end anastomosis technique to 21 patients (49%). After all operative survivors were followed up with a mean follow-up of 1.8 ± 0.8 years, data analyzed with t-test and the p value < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: The overall mortality rate was 4.6%. Forty mmHg gradients were determined in a patient from Resection Group postoperatively in the fifteenth month. After the balloon angioplasty, the gradient decreased to 25 mmHg. The presence of ventricular septal defect (p = 0.094) was the only significant predictor of adverse short-term outcome among the associated cardiac defects analyzed. The first-year survival rate was 100% in both groups in isolated coarctation (p = 0.965), however;such rate was found as 100% and 93.25% in Waldhausen Group and Resection Group, respectively in complex coarctation (p = 0.294). Conclusions: Both the subclavian flap repair and resection with extended end-to-end anastomosis for coarctation of the aorta in infants provide excellent short-term outcomes with lower recurrence rates requiring surgery or angioplasty.

In this study,the bimetallic Fe/Pd nanoparticle was synthesized using the catalytic element palladium to increase the effect of nano zero valent iron(nZVI),in the light of the information obtained from our previous study,in which the nZVI synthesis method was ***(DDT),one of the most widely used persistent organic pollutant pesticides in the world,was investigated in terms of its degradation by Fe/Pd nanoparticles and the difference with nZVI was *** the study,the Fe/Pd concentration,initial DDT concentration,and contact time were selected as variables affecting the *** highest possible initial DDT concentration for the treatment with Fe/Pd bimetallic nanoparticle was investigated to obtain the DDT effluent concentration below the carcinogenesis limit,0.23μg/*** highest concentration that could be treated was found to be 109.95 mg/L with Fe/*** was found that 44.3 min of contact time and 550 mg/L Fe/Pd concentration were needed to achieve this treatment.

Using transaction-level tick-by-tick data of same-and next-day settlement of the Russian Ruble versus the US Dollar exchange rate(RUB/USD)traded on the Moscow Exchange Market during the period 2005–2013,we analyze the impact of trading hours extensions on *** the sample period,the Moscow Exchange extended trading hours three times for the same-day settlement and two times for the next-day settlement of the RUB/USD *** analyze the effect of the implementations,various measures of historical and realized volatility are calculated for 5-and 15-min intraday intervals spanning a period of three months both prior to and following trading hours *** historical volatility measures,we also examine volume and *** apply an autoregressive moving average-autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity(ARMA-GARCH)model utilizing realized volatility and a trade classification rule to estimate the probability of informed *** extensions of trading hours cause a significant increase in both volatility and volume for further analyzing the reasons behind volatility *** changes mostly occur after the opening of the *** length of the extension has a significant positive effect on realized *** results indicate that informed trading increased substantially after the opening for the rate of same-day settlement,whereas this is not observed for next-day *** trading hours extensions raise opportunities for more transactions and liquidity in foreign exchange markets,they may also lead to higher volatility in the ***,this distortion is more significant at opening and midday.A potential explanation for the increased volatility mostly at the opening is that the trading hours extension attracts informed traders rather than liquidity providers.

Purpose: To present a case of sensory strabismus due to keratoconus with an ipsilateral nodular lesion of the bulbar conjunctiva. Case presentation:The patient is a 17 year-old-boy. The fixing eye was the right eye and keratoconus in this eye was late onset. Vision in the left eye was poor and keratoconus was advanced in this eye. Due to longstanding of keratoconus and occurrence in the sensitive period, sensory exotropia had developed in the left eye. A nodular lesion of the bulbar conjunctiva was also present in the ipsilateral eye. Conclusion: Sensory exotropia is not unusual but to be due to longstanding keratoconus is not a usual strabismus. If keratoconus develops before 7 years of age,sensory strabismus can develop. We reported and reviewed literature that keratoconus seldom begins in the sensitive period where abnormal visual experience affects visual development and may induce sensory exotropia.

Effects of resveratrol and methylprednisolone on biochemical,neurobehavioral and histopathological recovery after experimental spinal cord injury

Aim:To investigate the neuroprotective effect of resveratrol in an experimentalspinal cord injury(SCI)model in ***:Male Wistar albino rats weighing200-250 g were randomized into six ***-drop trauma was performedfor *** 1 underwent laminectomy *** 2 underwent laminectomyfollowed by *** 3,4,5,and 6 underwent laminectomy followed by SCIand received resveratrol(100 mg/kg),methylprednisolone(MP)(30 mg/kg),resveratrol(100 mg/kg)plus MP(30 mg/kg),and ethanol(2%),*** were divided into two subgroups for biochemical analysis(killed at 24 h aftersurgery)and for neurobehavioral and histopathological evaluation(killed at 6weeks after surgery).Posttraumatic neurological recovery after surgery was re-corded ***:Groups 3 and 5 revealed significantly lower malon-dialdehyde,nitric oxide,xanthine oxidase,and higher glutathione levels than group4(P<0.05).Neurological recovery rates were significantly better in groups 3 and5 than group 4(P<0.05).When spinal trauma size ratios were compared,there wasno significant difference between treatment ***:Resveratroltreatment revealed better biochemical recovery in the acute stage of trauma thanMP *** resveratrol and combined treatment revealed betterneurobehavioral recovery than MP treatment;resveratrol,MP,and combined treat-ment modalities improved histopathological recovery at the same level in the finalstage of the *** studies involving different doses of resveratroland different doses combinations with MP could promise better results as eachdrug has a different anti-oxidative mechanism of action.

Background:To describe the diagnostic performance of a deep learning algorithm in discriminating early-stage Fuchs'endothelial corneal dystrophy(FECD)without clinically evident corneal edema from healthy and late-stage FECD eyes using high-definition optical coherence tomography(HD-OCT).Methods:In this observational case-control study,104 eyes(53 FECD eyes and 51 healthy controls)received HDOCT imaging(Envisu R2210,Bioptigen,Buffalo Grove,IL,USA)using a 6 mm radial scan pattern centered on the corneal *** was clinically categorized into early(without corneal edema)and late stage(with corneal edema).A total of 18,720 anterior segment optical coherence tomography(AS-OCT)images(9180 healthy;5400 early-stage FECD;4140 late-stage FECD)of 104 eyes(81 patients)were used to develop and validate a deep learning classification network to differentiate early-stage FECD eyes from healthy eyes and those with clinical *** 5-fold cross-validation on the dataset containing 11,340 OCT images(63 eyes),the network was trained with 80%of these images(3420 healthy;3060 early-stage FECD;2700 late-stage FECD),then tested with 20%(720 healthy;720 early-stage FECD;720 late-stage FECD).Thereafter,a final model was trained with the entire dataset consisting the 11,340 images and validated with a remaining 7380 images of unseen AS-0CT scans of 41 eyes(5040 healthy;1620 early-stage FECD 720 late-stage FECD).Visualization of learned features was done,and area under curve(AUC),specificity,and sensitivity of the prediction outputs for healthy,early and late-stage FECD were ***:The final model achieved an AUC of 0.997±0.005 with 91%sensitivity and 97%specificity in detecting early-stage FECD;an AUC of 0.974±0.005 with a specificity of 92%and a sensitivity up to 100%in detecting late-stage FECD;and an AUC of 0.998±0.001 with a specificity 98%and a sensitivity of 99%in discriminating healthycorneas fromall ***:Deep learning algorithm is an accurate autonomous

The Effect of Limbal Autograft in Recurrence of Pterygium

Background: Assessing the effect of limbal autograft shifting in recurrence of pterygium. Methods: This single-center study was carried out in a tertiary health facility. A review of data on consecutive patients who underwent pure limbal autografts shifting after pterygium resection was done. In all the cases, the pterygia extended at least 3 mm beyond the limbus. The resected each limbal grafts included a width of 1.5 mm and a length of 2 or 3 mm of limbus and a depth of 250 μm. Schmer test was performed at the eighth month postoperatively. Pterygium recurrence was accepted endpoint of the study. One patient had recurrent pterygium, whereas the others had primary pterygium. Patients with other ocular surface diseases or ocular pathology and, patients who discontinued follow-up visits were excluded from the study. Results: The study included 10 patients, with 5 males and 5 females. Median age of the patients was 40 (25 - 70). Follow-up was conducted for a minimum of 8 months for patients with recurrence and at least for 16 months for non-recurrent cases. Recurrence was observed in 6 patients out of 10, in one patient, atypia was reported and excluded from the study. Four recurrent patients experienced decreased levels of tears. The rest one patient with recurrence had not any tear abnormality. The remaining 4 patients responded well to the surgery. Because of the high recurrence rate, it was decided to terminate the study. Conclusions: Limbal autografts shifting alone is not an appropriate treatment for primary pterygium because of the high recurrence rate.
