Analysis of intrahepatic sarcomatoid cholangiocarcinoma:Experience from 11 cases within 17 years

BACKGROUND Intrahepatic sarcomatoid chonalgiocarcinoma(s-CCC) is an extremely rare disease, accounting for less than 1% of hepatobiliary system malignancies, and its pathophysiology is not well known. On the hypothesis that its clinical, serologic,or radiologic diagnosis are not fully understood and its prognosis is poor, we investigated the distinguishing features of s-CCC compared with those of intrahepatic bile duct adenocarcinoma [cholangiocellular carcinoma(CCC)] in patients from a single *** To analyze the clinical, serologic, imaging, and histopathologic characteristics of intrahepatic s-CCC patients diagnosed in a single *** The clinical, serologic, imaging, and histopathologic features of 227 patients diagnosed with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma(IHCC) in a single medical center during the last 17 years were analyzed. The characteristics of 11 patients with s-CCC were compared with those of 216 patients with *** The number of patients with s-CCC who presented fever and abdominal pain and past history of chronic viral hepatitis or liver cirrhosis(LC) was higher than that of patients with CCC. In imaging studies, patients with s-CCC showed relatively aggressive features. However, no clear distinction was observed between s-CCC and CCC based on other clinical, serologic or radiologic examination results. An accurate diagnosis could be made only via a histopathologic examination through immunohistochemical staining. Cluster Analysis of Tropical Cyclones Making Landfall on the Korean Peninsula

Cluster analysis has been performed on the tracks of 51 Tropical Cyclones （TCs） that made landfall on the Korean Peninsula （KP） for the period of 1951-2004. The classification technique of the landfalling tracks used in this study was the fuzzy clustering method （FCM） and the resultant silhouette coefficient suggested four clusters as an optimal cluster number. Most TCs of Cluster 2 and Cluster 3 （C-23） tended to pass through China's Mainland before landfall, but those of Cluster 1 and Cluster 4 （C-14） tended to mostly land after moving northward from the East China Sea （ECS） without passing over China's Mainland. The TC landfalling frequency of C-14 has begun to clearly increase since the late 1980s, particularly the maximum landfalling frequency in the early 2000s set a record for the 54-year analysis period. The ridge axis of the western North Pacific high （WNPH） of C-23 bends more equatorward than that of C-14, so that the monsoon trough of C-23 is located more equatorward than that of C-14. As a consequence, most TCs of C-23 tend to recurve inland of China, but over the ECS for C-14.

Long-term performance of fiber-grid-reinforced asphalt overlay pavements: A case study of Korean national highways

The objective of this study was to verify the effect of fiber grid reinforcement on the longterm performance of asphalt overlay pavements by performing field investigation, laboratory test, and finite element analysis. Crack, rutting, roughness, and other miscellaneous distresses of fiber-grid-reinforced overlay sections and ordinary overlay sections were compared. Pavement conditions of fiber grid overlay sections before and after the overlay were also compared. Cores were obtained from the fiber-grid-reinforced and ordinary sections to measure bonding shear strength between the intermediate and overlay *** energy, displacement after yield, and shear stiffness of the cores were also obtained by analyzing the test results. Finite element analysis was performed by using the test results to validate the effect of the fiber grid reinforcement on the long-term performance of asphalt overlay pavements. Rutting and fatigue cracking were predicted for three cases: 1) fiber grid was not used;2) glass fiber grid was used;and 3) carbon fiber grid was used. The cracking ratio of fiber-grid-reinforced sections was much smaller than that of ordinary sections. The results of field investigation, laboratory test, and finite element analysis showed that the fiber grid reinforcement improved the long-term performance of asphalt overlay pavements.

Choroidal changes in eyes treated with high-dose systemic corticosteroids for optic neuritis

AIM:To analyze the effect of systemic high-dose corticosteroid on the choroid in patients with unilateral optic ***:A retrospective comparative cohort ***-six eyes of 38 patients with unilateral optic neuritis that received systemic high-dose corticosteroid treatment were *** thickness(CT)and choroidal vascularity index(CVI)were measured in both affected and the fellow eyes at baseline,1 wk.1 and 3 *** in CT and CVI were analyzed in both eyes and compared between ***:The mean CT and CVI were 349μm and 0.70 in the affected eyes and 340μm and 0.69 in the fellow eyes at baseline(P=0.503 and 0.440,respectively).Decrement of CT and CVI at month 3 were significant in affected eyes(P=0.017 and P<0.001).Decreased CVI began 2 wk after treatment whereas CT decreased from 1 *** CVI also decreased significantly in fellow eyes at 3 mo compared to the baseline(P=0.001).CONCLUSION:A significant decrement in CT and CVI can appear after 3 mo in optic neuritis patients treated with high-dose systemic corticosteroid *** decrease in CVI appeared earlier than the decrease in CT,suggesting choroidal vasoconstriction caused by systemic steroid as a possible mechanism.

Kinetics modeling for the mixed reforming of methane over Ni-CeO_2/MgAl_2O_4 catalyst

Kinetics model was developed for the mixed （steam and dry） reforming of methane, which is useful for the control of H2/CO ratio. The equilibrium constants of reaction rate were determined using the experimental equilibrium data at different reaction temperatures, while the forward reaction rate constants were estimated using the experimental data under non-equilibrium （high inert fraction and high space velocity） conditions. The comparison between calculated and experimental data clearly showed that the developed model described satisfactorily, and further analysis using the parametric sensitivity determined the wall temperature and CO2 fraction in the feed gas as effective parameters for the manipulation of CH4 conversion and H2/CO ratio of synthesis gas under the equilibrium condition. Meanwhile, the inert fraction, rather than the residence time, was selected as additional parameter under non-equilibrium condition.

Moderating effect of synthesized docosahexaenoic acid-enriched phosphatidylcholine on production of Th1 and Th2 cytokine in lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation

Objective: To evaluate effects of docosahexaenoic acid-enriched phosphatidylcholine(DHAPC) on cytokine production induced by lipopolysaccharide(LPS). Methods: The culture supernatants of splenocytes exposed to DHA-PC along with LPS were harvested to determine the production of Th 1(IFN-kines. Cytokines were m毭 and IL-2) and Th2 [IL-4, IL-5, IL-6 and IL-12/IL-23(p40)] cytoeasured using ELISA. Results: Co-administration of DHAPC with LPS resulted in significantly lower IL-2 expression compared to that observed with administration of only LPS(P<0.01). Treatment with DHA-PC and LPS significantly increased IL-5 expression(P<0.01). Moreover, co-administration of DHA-PC with LPS significantly decreased IL-6 and IL-12/IL-23(p40) expressions compared to that observed with administration of only LPS(P<0.01). Conclusions: Our results suggest that DHA-PC inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokines [IL-2, IL-6 and IL-12/IL-23(p40)] expression on induction of inflammation.
