Adhesive ginsenoside compound K patches for cartilage tissue regeneration

Biomaterial-based drug delivery systems have been developed to expedite cartilage regeneration;however,challenges related to drug recovery,validation,and efficient drug delivery *** instance,compound K(CK)is a major metabolite of ginsenosides that is known to protect against joint degeneration by inhibiting the production of inflammatory cytokines and the activation of immune ***,its effects on cartilage degradation and tissue regeneration remain ***,tissue-adhesive drug delivery depots that stably adhere to cartilage defects are required for CK *** this study,CK-loaded adhesive patches were reported to seal cartilage defects and deliver CK to defect sites,preventing cartilage degradation and accelerating cartilage tissue *** patches are stable and suitable for application in surgical procedures under physiological conditions and show excellent adhesiveness to cartilage *** addition,there were no significant differences in the adhesive polymeric networks before and after CK ***-loaded hydrocaffeic acid-conjugated chitosan patches significantly inhibited the stimulation of cartilage-degrading enzymes and apoptosis in osteoarthritic cartilage by releasing CK in cartilage ***,the NFkB signaling pathway of released CK from the adhesive patches in the treatment of osteoarthritis is ***,the CK-loaded adhesive patches are expected to significantly contribute to cartilage regeneration.

The dissolution behavior of nickel in the MgO-SiO 2-FeO slag system was investigated by using the thermodynamic equilibrium *** distribution ratio between molten MgO-SiO 2-FeO slag and molten Fe-Ni alloy at 1773 K and 1873 K was measured to understand the dissolution mechanism of nickel into the *** dependence of oxygen partial pressure and basicity on the distribution of nickel was *** distribution behavior between slag and Fe-Ni alloy increased with higher oxygen partial pressure showing a dependence of 1/*** basic slag systems near the olivine saturated composition,the nickel distribution ratio increased with higher basicity showing a slope of 1 and for acidic slag systems near the cristobalite saturated composition,the nickel distribution ratio decreased with higher basicity showing a slope *** dissolution behavior of nickel in the MgO-SiO 2-FeO slag system showed two independent mechanisms similar to that found in the CaO-SiO 2-CaF 2 *** distribution ratio of sulfur between the（CaO）-MgO-FeO-SiO 2 slag and Fe-Ni alloy at high temperature was also investigated to understand the refining ability of Ferronickel smelting slag by chemical equilibrating *** experimental results indicated that sulfide capacity in terms of the slag composition of MgO-FeO-SiO 2 slag and temperature was increased with increasing FeO and CaO contents as well as *** FeO is considered to work as relatively basic component in this slag system that has low *** the effect of components of slag on sulfide capacity,CaO and FeO is considered to be more effective basic oxide than MgO in MgO-FeO-SiO 2 slag system while the effect of FeO on sulfide capacity was gradually retarded with increasing *** effect of CaO on MgO solubility of slag and the relationship between sulfide and Ni oxide capacities was also discussed.

Effects of Polymeric Stabilizers on the Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles

Gold nanoparticles （AuNPs） stabilized with sodium alginate （SA）, glycol chitosan （GC）, polyvinyl alcohol （PVA）, and polyethyleneimine （PEI） were synthesized in aqueous solutions at room temperature. Different sizes and size distributions of AuNPs were obtained according to the polymeric stabilizers. The mean particle diameters of AuNPs synthesized with GC and PVA as stabilizers were about 5.1 and 5.3 nm, respectively, while those of AuNPs stabilized with SA and PEI were 8.4 and 10.8 nm, respectively. When SA was used, relatively large particles aggregated to form large clusters. In the case of GC, a number of small particles built up large clusters. When PVA was used, the size and the number of nanoperticles were estimated small with a low weight content of Au. For this reason, the PVA-stabilized AuNPs formed clusters with a small hydrodynamic size. The AuNPs synthesized in the aqueous solution of PEI without a reducing agent, sodium borohydride, were uniform in size and formed the smallest nanoclusters （67.4 nm）. In this case, the highest Au content was obtained. Sufficiently grown nanoparticles with a high Au content and a limited hydrodynamic size are considered to be suitable for a variety of applications.

Synthesis of Fe_3O_4-coated silica aerogel nanocomposites

Fe3O4:SiO2 nanocomposite powders were synthesized by a two-step process,which included the precipitation of FeCl2 and FeCl3 and the gelation of silicic acid solution derived from water *** first,Fe3O4 nanoparticles having a crystallite size of 20 nm were obtained by controlling the ratio of Fe(II) and Fe(III) *** the second step,Fe3O4 particles were embedded in SiO2 matrix by the hydrolysis and subsequent condensation of the silicic acid solution containing Fe3O4 *** was found that the Fe3O4 nanoparticles homogenously disperse in the SiO2 *** Fe3O4:SiO2 nanocomposite exhibited an enhanced thermal stability against oxidation compared with pure ***-IR analysis indicates the presence of the Si-O-Fe bond in the Fe3O4:SiO2 (1:10,mole fraction) nanocomposite.

Determination of efficient superfinishing conditions for mirror surface finishing of titanium

To determine mirror surface finishing conditions and efficient and economical superfinishing conditions for pure titanium and titanium alloys, an abrasive film is used when superfinishing is performed under varying conditions. These conditions include the workpiece rotation speed, the oscillation speed, the contact pressure of the roller, the hardness of the roller, and the type of abrasive film. The superfinishing device is applied to polishing a thin and long cylindrical bar. A micro-finishing film and a lapping film were used as abrasive films. A1203 grains or SiC grains were used as abrasives. The surface roughness of a polished workpiece was measured using a stylus-type surface-roughness measuring instrument. As a result, the conditions to improve the polishing surface efficiently include high values for the workpiece rotation speed, oscillation speed and contact pressure. The roller hardness has no effect on the efficient polishing conditions. The mirror finish of a surface can be created using lapping film of 3 μm with Al2O3 grains after polishing to a steady surface roughness under the efficient polishing conditions.

Effects of ocean acidifi cation driven by elevated CO_2 on larval shell growth and abnormal rates of the venerid clam, Mactra veneriformis

A bstract The venerid clam(M actra veneriformis Reeve 1854) is one of the main cultured bivalve species in intertidal and shallow subtidal ecosystems along the west coast of Korea. To understand the effects of ocean acidifi cation on the early life stages of Korean clams, we investigated shell growth and abnormality rates and types in the D-shaped, umbonate veliger, and pediveliger stages of the venerid clam M. veneriformis during exposure to elevated seawater pCO_2. In particular, we examined abnormal types of larval shell morphology categorized as shell deformations, shell distortions, and shell fi ssures. Specimens were incubated in seawater equilibrated with bubbled CO_2-enriched air at(400±25)×10^(-6)(ambient control),(800±25)×10^(-6)(high pCO_2), or(1 200±28)×10^(-6)(extremely high pCO_2), the atmospheric CO_2 concentrations predicted for the years 2014, 2084, and 2154(70-year intervals; two human generations), respectively, in the Representative Concentration Pathway(RCP) 8.5 scenario. The mean shell lengths of larvae were signifi cantly decreased in the high and extremely high pCO_2 groups compared with the ambient control groups. Furthermore, under high and extremely high pCO_2 conditions, the cultures exhibited signifi cantly increased abundances of abnormal larvae and increased severity of abnormalities compared with the ambient control. In the umbonate veliger stage of the experimental larvae, the most common abnormalities were shell deformations, distortions, and fi ssures; on the other hand, convex hinges and mantle protuberances were absent. These results suggest that elevated CO_2 exerts an additional burden on the health of M. veneriformis larvae by impairing early development.

Korean freshwater snails of the genus Semisulcospira are widely distributed across East *** has been a very popular nutritional food in Korea,and is an ecologically important water quality indicator because it lives only in clean ***,no microsatellite markers have been generated to study the population genetic diversity of this *** the present study,we developed and characterized 18 novel microsatellite loci from Semisulcospira coreana genomic *** microsatellites were isolated using 454 GS-FLX titanium sequencing and 18 markers were used for genotyping in *** addition,we also tested the cross-species transferability of the microsatellite markers in four additional Semisulcospira *** identified 18 polymorphic loci and the number of alleles per loci,and their polymorphism information content values ranged from 2 to 17 and 0.203 to 0.902,*** observed and expected heterozygosities of the loci ranged from 0.063 to 0.924 and 0.226 to 0.924,*** to the analysis of the cross-species transferability of these markers,four species,***,***,***,and ***,showed a very high transferability(80%–85%).These results show that this set of nuclear markers could be useful for population genetics studies of this species and closely related species.

Midazolam dose is associated with recurrence of paradoxical reactions during endoscopy

BACKGROUND Midazolam is commonly used for sedation during gastrointestinal ***,some patients experience paradoxical reactions characterized by excessive movement or *** To investigate the rate of recurrence of paradoxical reactions to midazolam during an upper *** We retrospectively reviewed 122152 sedative endoscopies among a total of 58553 patients at the Seoul National University Hospital,Healthcare System Gangnam Center,from July 2013 to December *** them,361 patients with a history of paradoxical reaction during sedative upper endoscopy were *** characteristics of patients in the recurrent and non-recurrent groups were compared via multivariable analysis using logistic *** Paradoxical reactions occurred in 0.86%(1054/122152)of endoscopies,and in 1.51%(888/58553)of *** the 361 subjects with previous paradoxical reactions in sedative endoscopies,111(30.7%)experienced further paradoxical *** analysis revealed that the total midazolam dose used was higher in the recurrent group(6.74±2.58 mg)than in the non-recurrent group(5.49±2.04 mg;P<0.0001).Patients were administered a lower dose of midazolam than previous doses:1 mg less in the recurrent group and 2 mg less in the non-recurrent *** analysis showed that the midazolam dose difference was an independent risk factor for recurrent paradoxical reaction(odds ratio:1.213,95%CI:1.099-1.338,P=0.0001).CONCLUSION The rate of recurrence of paradoxical reactions is significantly associated with midazolam *** dose of midazolam administered to patients with previous paradoxical reactions should be less than that previously used.

An Effective Threat Detection Framework for Advanced Persistent Cyberattacks

Recently,with the normalization of non-face-to-face online environments in response to the COVID-19 pandemic,the possibility of cyberattacks through endpoints has *** endpoint devices are managed meticulously to prevent cyberattacks and ensure timely responses to potential security *** particular,because telecommuting,telemedicine,and teleeducation are implemented in uncontrolled environments,attackers typically target vulnerable endpoints to acquire administrator rights or steal authentication information,and reports of endpoint attacks have been increasing *** persistent threats(APTs)using various novel variant malicious codes are a form of a sophisticated ***,conventional commercial antivirus and anti-malware systems that use signature-based attack detectionmethods cannot satisfactorily respond to such *** this paper,we propose a method that expands the detection coverage inAPT attack *** this model,an open-source threat detector and log collector are used synergistically to improve threat detection *** the scope of attack log collection through interworking between highly accessible open-source tools can efficiently increase the detection coverage of tactics and techniques used to deal with APT attacks,as defined by MITRE Adversarial Tactics,Techniques,and Common Knowledge(ATT&CK).We implemented an attack environment using an APT attack scenario emulator called Carbanak and analyzed the detection coverage of Google Rapid Response(GRR),an open-source threat detection tool,and Graylog,an open-source log *** proposed method expanded the detection coverage against MITRE ATT&CK by approximately 11%compared with that conventional methods.
