Hybrid algorithm for modeling of fluid-structure interaction in incompressible, viscous flows

The objective of this paper is to present and to validate a new hybrid coupling （HC） algorithm for modeling of fluid-structure interaction （FSI） in incompressible, viscous flows. The HC algorithm is able to avoid numerical instability issues associated with artificial added mass effects, which are often encountered by standard loosely coupled （LC） and tightly coupled （TC） algorithms, when modeling the FSI response of flexible structures in incompressible flow. The artificial added mass effect is caused by the lag in exchange of interfacial displacements and forces between the fluid and solid solvers in partitioned algorithms. The artificial added mass effect is much more prominent for light/flexible struc- tures moving in water, because the fluid forces are in the same order of magnitude as the solid forces, and because the speed at which numerical errors propagate in an incom- pressible fluid. The new HC algorithm avoids numerical instability issues associated with artificial added mass effects by embedding Theodorsen＇s analytical approximation of the hydroelastic forces in the solution process to obtain better initial estimates of the displacements. Details of the new HC algorithm are presented. Numerical validation studies are shown for the forced pitching response of a steel and a plastic hydrofoil. The results show that the HC algorithm is able to converge faster, and is able to avoid numerical insta- bility issues, compared to standard LC and TC algorithms, when modeling the transient FSI response of a plastic hydrofoil. Although the HC algorithm is only demonstrated for a NACA0009 hydrofoil subject to pure pitching motion, the method can be easily extended to model general 3-D FSI response and stability of complex, flexible structures in turbulent, incompressible, multiphase flows.

A Proximal Promoter Region of Arabidopsis DREB2C Confers Tissue-specific Expression under Heat Stress

The dehydration-responsive element-binding factor 2C （DREB2C） is a member of the CBF/DREB subfamily of proteins, which contains a single APETALA2/Ethylene responsive element-binding factor （AP2/ERF） domain. To identify the expression pattern of the DREB2C gene, which contains multiple transcription cis-regulatory elements in its promoter, an approximately 1.4 kb upstream DREB2C sequence was fused to the β-glucuronidase reporter gene （GUS） and the recombinant p1244 construct was transformed into Arabidopsis thaliana （L.） Heynh. The promoter of the gene directed prominent GUS activity in the vasculature in diverse young dividing tissues. Upon applying heat stress （HS）, GUS staining was also enhanced in the vasculature of the growing tissues. Analysis of a series of 5＇-deletions of the DREB2C promoter revealed that a proximal upstream sequence sufficient for the tissue-specific spatial and temporal induction of GUS expression by HS is localized in the promoter region between -204 and -34 bps relative to the transcriptional start site. Furthermore, electrophoretic mobility shift assay （EMSA） demonstrated that nuclear protein binding activities specific to a -120 to -32 bp promoter fragment increased after HS. These results indicate that the TATA-proximal region and some latent trans-acting factors may cooperate in HS-induced activation of the Arabidopsis DREB2C promoter.

pH-induced structural changes of surface immobilized poly (L-lysine) by two-dimensional (2D) infrared correlation study

This paper reports the pH-induced structural changes in the surface immobilized poly（L-lysine）（PLL）***-dimensional（2D） correlation analysis was applied to the Fourier transform infrared（FTIR）spectra of the surface-immobilized PLL film to examine the spectral changes induced by the alternations of the protonation state of the amino group in the side *** spectral changes in the FTIR spectra of the PLL film were observed between pH 7 and *** decrease in the protonation state of the amino group in the side chain induced spectral changes in the amino group as well as conformational changes in the alky]group in the side *** pH 1-8,the spectral changes in the amino and alkyl groups in the side chain occurred before those of the amide group in the main chain of the surface immobilized PLL film.

Influences of ions and temperature on performance of carbon nano-particulates in supercapacitors with neutral aqueous electrolytes

A commercial product of carbon nano-particles, Cabot MONACH 1300 pigment black （CMPB）, was studied for basic structural information and electrochemical performance in neutral aqueous electrolytes, aiming at applications in supercapacitors. As confirmed by SEM and HRTEM, the CMPB had a hierarchical struc- ture, containing basic 10 nm nano-spheres which combined into ca. 50 nm agglomerates which further aggregated into larger particles of micrometres. The capacitance of this commercial material was found to increase with decreasing the size of hydrous cation （Li＋→Na＋ → K＋）, instead of the cation crystal radius （K＋→ Na＋→Li＋） when coupled with the same anion （cl-）. In electrolytes with the same cation concentration （K＋）, changing the anion from the larger dianion （SO42 ） to the smaller monoanion （cl-） also increased the capacitance at high potential scan rates （〉50 mV/s）. Increasing electrolyte concentration produced expected effect, including raising the electrode capacitance, but lowering the equivalent series resistance （ESR）, charge transfer resistance （CTR）, and the diffusion resistance. At higher temperatures, the CMPB exhibited slightly higher capacitance, which does not agree with the Gouy-Chapman theory on electric double layer （EDL）. A hypothesis is proposed to account for the capacitance increase with temperature as a result of the CMPB opening up some micro-pores for more ions to access in response to the temperature increase.

Previously we have designed and implemented new image browsing facilities to support effective offiine image contents on mobile devices with limited capabilities： low bandwidth, small display, and slow processing. In this letter, we fulfill the automatic production of cartoon contents fitting small-screen display, and introduce a clustering method useful for various types of cartoon images as a prerequisite stage for preserving semantic meaning. The usage of neural networks is to properly cut the various forms of pages. Texture information that is useful for grayscale image segmentation gives us a good clue for page layout analysis using the multilayer perceptron （MLP） based x-y recursive algorithm. We also automatically frame the segment MLP using agglomerative segmentation. Our experimental results show that the combined approaches yield good results of segmentation for several cartoons.

[001]-texturing of(K,Na)NbO_(3)-based piezoceramics with a pseudocubic structure and their application to piezoelectric devices

0.96(K_(0.5)Na_(0.5-z)Li_(z))(Nb_(0.92)Sb_(0.08))O_(3)-0.04(Ca_(0.5)Sr_(0.5))ZrO_(3)[(KN_(0.5-z)L_(z))NS-CSZ]piezoceramics(0≤z≤0.04)were aligned in the[001]orientation using 3%(in mole)NaNbO_(3)templates with a large Lotgering factor(>97%).Their crystal structures transformed from the orthorhombic-pseudocubic(O-P)structure to the orthorhombic-tetragonal-pseudocubic(O-T-P)structure with an increasing *** P structure was interpreted as a rhombohedral R3m *** piezoelectricity of the compositions increased after[001]-texturing,and the enhancement was proportional to the O phase *** composition(z=0.03)exhibited the highest piezoelectric constant(d_(33);670 pC/N)and electromechanical coupling factor(k_(p);0.56).Piezoelectric energy harvesters were produced using the untextured and textured samples(z=0.03).The textured harvester delivered a large power density of 26.6 mW/mm^(3),which was larger than that of the untextured harvester owing to the enhanced kp and d_(33)×g_(33) of the textured piezoceramic.A multilayer actuator was produced using the textured sample(z=0.03),and it exhibited a large acceleration(44.2 G)and displacement(±3,730 mm)at±25 ***,the[001]-textured(KN_(0.47)L_(0.03))NS-CSZ piezoceramic is suitable for piezoelectric energy harvesters and actuators.

Bioresponsive hydrogels are smart materials that respond to various external stimuli and exhibit great potential as biosensors owing to their capability of real-time and label-free ***,we propose a sensing platform based on bioresponsive hydrogels,employing the concept of moiré *** sets of line patterns with different pitch sizes are prepared;a hydrogel grating whose pitch size changes according to external stimuli and a reference grating with constant pitch *** volume changes of the hydrogel caused by external stimuli changes the pitch size of the hydrogel grating,and subsequently,the pitch sizes of the moiré patterns(moiré signal),whose values can be obtained in a real-time and label-free manner through customized moiré microscopy and signal *** confirming that the pH-induced swelling of hydrogel could be monitored using moiré patterns,we performed moiré pattern-based detection of specific proteins using protein-responsive hydrogel that underwent shrinking via interaction with target ***-derived neurotrophic factor and platelet-derived growth factor were selected as the model proteins,and our proposed system successfully detected both proteins at nanomolar *** both cases,the pitch size change of hydrogel grating was monitored much more sensitively using moiré patterns than through direct *** changes in the moiré signals caused by target proteins were detected in ex-vivo environments using a custom-made intraocular lens incorporating the hydrogel grating,demonstrating the capability of the proposed system to detect various markers in intraocular aqueous humor,when implanted in the eye.

CoolVox:Advanced 3D convolutional neural network models for predicting solar radiation on building facades

Data-driven models have become increasingly prominent in the building,architecture,and construction *** area ideally suited to exploit this powerful new technology is building performance ***-based models have traditionally been used to estimate the energy flow,air movement,and heat balance of ***,physics-based models require many assumptions,significant computational power,and a considerable amount of time to output *** neural networks(ANNs)with prefabricated or simulated data are likely to be a more feasible option for environmental analysis conducted by designers during the early design *** ANNs require fewer inputs and shorter computation times and offer superior performance and potential for data augmentation,they have received increased attention for predicting the surface solar radiation on ***,ANNs can provide innovative and quick design solutions,enabling designers to receive instantaneous feedback on the effects of a proposed change to a building's *** research introduces deep learning methods as a means of simulating the annual radiation intensities and exposure level of buildings without the need for physics-based *** propose the CoolVox model to demonstrate the feasibility of using 3D convolutional neural networks to predict the surface radiation on building *** CoolVox model accurately predicted the radiation intensities of building facades under different boundary conditions and performed better than ARINet(with average mean square errors of 0.01 and 0.036,respectively)in predicting the radiation intensity both with(validation error=0.0165)and without(validation error=0.0066)the presence of boundary buildings.

Enhanced electrochemical performance of graphitic carbon-wrapped spherical FeOF nanoparticles using maleopimaric acid as a cathode material for sodium-ion batteries

Sodium-ion batteries(SIBs)are considered one of the most promising energy storage systems for replacing lithium-ion batteries because of the high abundance and low cost of *** oxyfluoride(FeOF)is a promising conversion-based cathode material for SIBs because of its high theoretical capacity of about855 mA h g^(-1),low-cost chemical compositions,and its lower sensitivity to the size of charged carrier ***,the poor electrical conductivity and ionic diffusion of FeOF result in a low rate capability and *** this work,FeOF nanoparticles wrapped by graphitic carbon layers were synthesized using abietic or maleopimaric acid as both the carbon source and organic *** addition,the morphology of the FeOF particles was gradually controlled from rod to spherical shapes,simply depending on the rosin *** FeOF nanoparticles prepared with maleopimaric acid showed a large reversible discharge capacity of 356.7 mA h g^(-1)with a fading rate of 0.21%per cycle after 100 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g^(-1)and an excellent rate capability.
