The characteristics of poly（3-hydroxybutyrate）, P（3HB）, and the production by an autotrophic culture of Alcaligenes eutrophus ATCC 17697 T using a range of concentrations of carbon dioxide （CO 2 ） under the nitrogen-limited condition were investigated in this study. For the 6 d cultivation in a mineral medium with nitrogen, the growth with respect to the CO 2 concentration was in order of 1＞3＞10＞ 20% CO 2 . After 96 h of the nitrogen-limited cultivation, the cell concentrations decreased by 1.2, 1.15, 0.87, and 0.75 g/L at the CO 2 concentration of 1, 3, 10 and 20% CO 2 , respectively. The P（3HB） accumulation in the cells also decreased with the increase in the CO 2 concentration. The final P（3HB） contents were 56.8, 56.1, 52.5, and 47.1% at 1, 3, 10 and 20% CO 2 , respectively. The results from this study will contribute towards the process development for the CO 2 conversion using microorganisms.

In this study, the risk of Cd and Pb in a former smelter area was evaluated using the toxicity predicting tool based on the Biotic Ligand Model and the sensitivity of Vibrio fischeri. The evaluated toxicities show that all the areas on the site have high risks due to the presence of Cd in soil, while Pb in soil does not pose risk. The site specific soil quality levels （SQLs） of Cd and Pb were suggested based on the same tool, and compared with the Korean soil regulatory level. The suggested SQLs of Cd were much lower than the Korean soil regulatory level;while the suggested SQLs of Pb were higher than the regulatory level. The total concentrations of Cd or Pb in soil determined and the suggested SQLs were compared. At all areas of the site, the total concentration of Cd in soil exceeded the site specific SQL;however, for Pb, the risk pollution level exceeded 1 only for one sample among 51 samples. The huge difference of suggested SQLs and the present standards of Cd could be explained by the low sensitivity of V. fischeri for Cd.

This study investigates the effects of lead （Pb） on 2,4-dinitrotoluene （2,4-DNT） degradation when modified Fenton reactions are used to remediate soils contaminated with both Pb and 2,4-DNT. At all H 2 O 2 concentrations, the Pb sorption after 24 h reaction was ＞95%;but a significantly greater amount of Pb was sorbed at 0.01 M-0.2 M H 2 O 2 （＞99%） when compared with the Pb sorption at higher H 2 O 2 concentrations. This indicates Pb mobilization due to the Fenton reactions. The 2,4-DNT degradation increased with increasing H 2 O 2 concentrations from 0.01 M to 1 M, but no further increase was observed with further increase in the H 2 O 2 concentration. This could be attributed to the increased 2,4-DNT desorption due to the reductive moieties produced by the Fenton reactions at higher H 2 O 2 concentrations. At 0.01 M and 0.05 M H 2 O 2 , the 2,4-DNT degradation was similar in the presence and the absence of Pb;however, it was lower in the presence of Pb at higher H 2 O 2 concentrations （≥0.2 M）. This can be explained by the stable complex formation between Pb and soil organic matter （SOM）, which could likely reduce the loss of SOM due to Fenton reactions, hence the 2,4-DNT desorption. Thus, Pb removal prior to the application of Fenton reactions is recommended when remediating 2,4-DNT from soils contaminated with both Pb and 2,4-DNT.

Time-dependent effect of combination therapy with erythropoietin and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in a mouse model of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury

Erythropoietin （EPO） and granulocyte colony- stimulating factor （G-CSF） are likely to play broad roles in the brain. We investigated the effects of combination therapy with EPO and G-CSF in hypoxic- ischemic brain injury during the acute, subacute, and chronic phases. A total of 79 C57BL/6 mice with hypoxic-ischemic brain injury were randomly assigned acute （days 1-5）, subacute （days 11-15）and chronic （days 28-32） groups. All of them were treated with G-CSF （250 μg/kg） and EPO （5 000 U/kg） or saline daily for 5 consecutive days. Behavioral assessments and immunohistochemistry for angiogenesis, neuro- genesis, and astrogliosis were performed with an 8-week follow-up. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 （HIF-1） was also measured by Western blot analysis. The results showed that the combination therapy with EPO and G-CSF in the acute phase significantly improved rotarod performance and forelimb-use symmetry compared to the other groups, while subacute EPO and G-CSF therapy exhibited a modest improvement compared with the chronic saline controls. The acute treatment significantly increased the density of CD31^＋（PECAM-1） and a-smooth muscle actin^＋ vessels in the frontal cortex and striatum, increased BrdU^＋/PSA- NCAM^＋ neurogenesis in the subventricular zone, and decreased astroglial density in the striatum. Furthermore, acute treatment significantly increased the HIF-1 expression in the cytosol and nucleus, whereas chronic treatment did not change the HIF-1 expression, consistent with the behavioral outcomes. These results indicate that the induction of HIF-1 expression by combination therapy with EPO and G-CSF synergistically enhances not only behavioral function but also neurogenesis and angiogenesis while decreasing the astroglial response in a time- dependent manner.

Background:Sevoflurane is widely used to anesthetize children because of its rapid action with minimal irritation of the ***,there is a high risk of agitation after emergence from *** surgery,in particular,can trigger agitation because patients have their eyes covered in the postoperative *** aim of this study was to determine whether or not esmolol and lidocaine could decrease emergence agitation in ***:Eighty-four patients aged 3 to 9 years undergoing strabismus surgery were randomly assigned to a control group(saline only),a group that received intravenous lidocaine 1.5 mg/kg,and a group that received intravenous esmolol 0.5 mg/kg and lidocaine 1.5 mg/*** was measured using the objective pain score,Cole 5-point score,and Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale score at the end of surgery,on arrival in the recovery room,and 10 and 30 min after ***:The group that received the combination of esmolol and lidocaine showed lower OPS and RASS scores than the other two groups when patients awoke from anesthesia(OPS=0(0-4),RASS=-4[(-5)-1])and were transferred to the recovery room(OPS=0(0-8),RASS=-1[(-5)-3])(P0.05).Conclusions:When pediatric strabismus surgery is accompanied by sevoflurane anesthesia,an intravenous injection of esmolol and lidocaine could alleviate agitation until arrival in the recovery room.

AIM:To investigate the clinical characteristics and outcomes of idiopathic Helicobacter pylori(***)-negative and drug-negative]peptic ulcer bleeding(PUB).METHODS:A consecutive series of patients who experienced PUB between 2006 and 2012 was retrospectively analyzed.A total of 232 patients were enrolled in this *** patients were divided into four groups according to the etiologies of PUB:idiopathic,***-associated,drug-induced and combined(***-associated and drug-induced)*** compared the clinical characteristics and outcomes between the *** the silver stain or rapid urease tests were ***-negative,we obtained an additional biopsy specimen by endoscopic re-examination and performed an *** antibody test 6-8 wk after the initial endoscopic *** a diagnosis of idiopathic PUB,a negative result of an *** antibody test was *** all cases,re-bleeding was confirmed by endoscopic *** the risk assessment,the Blatchford and the Rockall scores were calculated for all ***:For PUB,the frequency of *** infection was 59.5%(138/232),whereas the frequency of idiopathic cases was 8.6%(20/232).When idiopathic PUB was compared to ***-associated PUB,the idiopathic PUB group showed a higher rate of rebleeding after initial hemostasis during the hospital stay(30%vs 7.4%,P = 0.02).When idiopathic PUB was compared to drug-induced PUB,the patients in the idiopathic PUB group showed a higher rate of rebleeding after initial hemostasis upon admission(30%vs 2.7%,P < 0.01).When drug-induced PUB was compared to ***-associated PUB,the patients in the drug-induced PUB were older(68.49 ± 14.76 years vs 47.83 ± 15.15 years,P< 0.01) and showed a higher proportion of gastric ulcer(77%vs 49%,P < 0.01).However,the Blatchford and the Rockall scores were not significantly different between the two *** the patients who experienced drug-induced PUB,no significant differences were found with respect
