Recursive Approximation of Complex Behaviours With IoT-Data Imperfections

This paper presents an approach to recursively estimate the simplest linear model that approximates the time-varying local behaviors from imperfect(noisy and incomplete) measurements in the internet of things(IoT) based distributed decision-making problems. We first show that the problem of finding the lowest order model for a multi-input single-output system is a cardinality(l0) optimization problem, known to be *** solve the problem a simpler approach is proposed which uses the recently developed atomic norm concept and the modified Frank-Wolfe(mFW) algorithm is introduced. Further, the paper computes the minimum data-rate required for computing the models with imperfect measurements. The proposed approach is illustrated on a building heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning(HVAC) control system that aims at optimizing energy consumption in commercial buildings using IoT devices in a distributed manner. The HVAC control application requires recursive thermal dynamical model updates due to frequently changing conditions and non-linear dynamics. We show that the method proposed in this paper can approximate such complex dynamics on single-board computers interfaced to sensors using unreliable communication channels. Real-time experiments on HVAC systems and simulation studies are used to illustrate the proposed method.

Pressure and proximity measurements made in a tunnel indicate that a typical vehicle passage produced on the tunnel roof an initial pressure increase of small magnitude,followed by a sharp and more substantial drop in pressure below *** magnitude of the pressure drop was found to increase with smaller clearances between the vehicle top and the tunnel roof,consistent with the Bernoulli relation and the vehicle *** dynamic pressures potentially may have significant effects on the vibration and noise environments on the lower floors of“air rights construction”buildings that span highways.

BACKGROUND Diabetes rates among pregnant women in the United States have been increasing and are associated with adverse pregnancy *** To investigate differences in birth outcomes(preterm birth,macrosomia,and neonatal death)by diabetes *** Cross-sectional design,using linked Missouri birth and death certificates(singleton births only),2010 to 2012(n=204057).exposure was diabetes non-diabetic,pre-pregnancy diabetes-insulin dependent(PD-I),pre-pregnancy diabetes-non-insulin dependent(PD-NI),gestational diabetes-insulin dependent(GD-I),and gestational diabetes-non-insulin dependent(GD-NI).Outcomes included preterm birth,macrosomia,and infant *** included demographic characteristics,adequacy of prenatal care,body mass index,smoking,hypertension,and previous preterm *** and multivariate logistic regression assessed differences in outcomes by diabetes *** Women with PD-I,PD-NI,and GD-I remained at a significantly increased odds for preterm birth(aOR 2.87,aOR 1.77,and aOR 1.73,respectively)and having a very large baby[macrosomia](aOR 3.01,aOR 2.12,and aOR 1.96,respectively);in reference to non-diabetic *** with GDNI were at a significantly increased risk for macrosomia(aOR1.53),decreased risk for their baby to die before their first birthday(aOR 0.41)and no difference in risk for preterm birth in reference to non-diabetic *** Diabetes is associated with the poor birth *** management of diabetes during pregnancy and healthy lifestyle behaviors before pregnancy can reduce the risk for diabetes and poor birth outcomes.

A number of natural experiments have recently found that COVID-19 restrictions imposed in nations worldwide are correlated with short-term reductions—in some cases dramatic reductions—in mobile-source air pollutants. Noticeably absent from these studies are estimates of the social net benefits associated with the changes in human behavior underlying the pandemic-induced effects. Using readily available data provided by the state of Utah and the U.S. environmental Protection Agency’s Co-Benefits Risk Assessment Health Impacts Screening and Mapping Tool (COBRA), we find that daily social net benefit was positive during a pandemic-induced shutdown from March to April, 2020 in Utah’s Wasatch Front region solely when COBRA’s “high” health benefit estimate from combined reductions in PM2.5 and NOx concentrations are weighed against the region’s “low” vehicle-trip cost estimate. All other scenarios correspond with negative net benefit estimates, i.e., when high and low benefit estimates of reductions solely in PM2.5 concentrations as well as for combined reductions in PM2.5 and NOx concentrations are weighed against the region’s high vehicle-trip cost estimate. Generally speaking, social net benefits are higher for two of the Wasatch Front’s four counties.

There are intense interests in discovering pro regenerative medicine leads that can promote cardiac differentiation and regeneration,as well as repair damaged heart *** have combined zebrafish embryo-based screens with cardiomyogenesis assays to discover selective small molecules that modulate heart development and regeneration with minimal adverse *** related compounds with novel structures,named as Cardiomogen 1 and 2(CDMG1 and CDMG2),were identified for their capacity to promote myocardial hyperplasia through expansion of the cardiac progenitor cell *** find that Cardiomogen acts as a Wnt inhibitor by targeting p-catenin and reducing Tcf/Lef-mediated transcription in cultured *** treatment of amputated zebrafish hearts reduces nuclear p-catenin in injured heart tissue,increases cardiomyocyte(CM)proliferation,and expedites wound healing,thus accelerating cardiac muscle ***,Cardiomogen can alleviate the functional deterioration of mammalian hearts after myocardial *** hearts exposed to CDMG1 display increased newly formed CMs and reduced fibrotic scar tissue,which are in part attributable to the^-catenin *** findings indicate Cardiomogen as a Wnt inhibitor in enhancing injury-induced CM proliferation and heart regeneration,highlighting the values of embryo-based small molecule screens in discovery of effective and safe medicine leads.

The high demand for rapid wound healing has spurred the development of multifunctional and smart bioadhesives with strong bioadhesion,antibacterial effect,real-time sensing,wireless communication,and on-demand treatment *** with bio-inspired structures and chemicals have shown unprecedented adhesion strengths,as well as tunable optical,electrical,and bio-dissolvable *** wound healing has been achieved via directly released antibacterial and growth factors,material or drug-induced host immune responses,and delivery of curative *** recently,the integration of biosensing and treatment modules with wireless units in a closed-loop system yielded smart bioadhesives,allowing real-time sensing of the physiological conditions(e.g.,pH,temperature,uric acid,glucose,and cytokine)with iterative feedback for drastically enhanced,stage-specific wound healing by triggering drug delivery and treatment to avoid infection or prolonged *** rapid advances in the burgeoning field,challenges still exist in the design and fabrication of integrated systems,particularly for chronic wounds,presenting significant opportunities for the future development of next-generation smart materials and systems.

Data sourcing challenges in African nations have led many African urban infrastructure developments to be implemented with minimal scientific backing to support their success. In some cases this may directly impact a city’s ability to reach service delivery, economic growth and human development goals, let alone the city’s ability to protect ecosystem services upon which it relies. As an attempt to fill this gap, this paper describes an exploratory process used to determine city-level demographic, economic and resource flow data for African nations. The approach makes use of scaling and clustering techniques to form acceptable and utilizable representations of selected African cities. Variables that may serve as the strongest predictors for resource consumption intensity in African nations and cities were explored, in particular, the aspects of the Koppen Climate Zones, estimates of average urban income and GDP, and the influence of urban primacy. It is expected that the approach examined will provide a step towards estimating and understanding African cities and their resource profiles.
