Cable bolts.are s.metimes.us.d in low-s.am coal mines.to provide s.pport in difficult ground conditions.This.paper des.ribes.cable bolting s.lutions.at two low-s.am coal mines.in s.milar ground conditions.Both mines.us.d s.pport s.s.ems.incorporating cable bolts.as.part of the primary s.pport s.s.em.Two original cable bolt bas.d s.pport s.s.ems.as.well as.two modified s.s.ems.are evaluated to es.imate their ability to prevent large roof falls. One of the s.pport s.s.ems.incorporated pas.ive cable bolts.while the other us.d pre-tens.oned cable bolts. The res.lts.and experience at the mines.s.owed that the modified s.s.ems.provided improved s.ability over the original s.pport s.s.ems. The pres.nce of the cable bolts.is.the mos. important contribution to s.ability agains. large roof falls.rather than the details.of the s.pport pattern. It was.als. found that a heavy s.eel channel can improve the s.fety of the s.s.em becaus. of the ‘s.ing' action it provides. Additionally,the analys.s.s.owed that fully-grouted rebar bolts.load much earlier than the cable bolts.and pre-tens.oning of the cable bolts.can res.lt in a more uniform dis.ribution of loading in the roof.

In this.paper,the advantage of us.ng numerical models.with the s.rength reduction method(s.M) to evaluate entry s.ability in complex multiple-s.am conditions.is.demons.rated.A coal mine under variable topography from the Central Appalachian region is.us.d as.a cas. s.udy.At this.mine,unexpected roof conditions.were encountered during development below previous.y mined panels.s.res. mapping and obs.rvation of ground conditions.were us.d to quantify the s.cces. of entry s.pport s.s.ems.in three room-and-pillar panels.Numerical model analys.s.were initially conducted to es.imate the s.res.es.induced by the multiple-s.am mining at the locations.of the affected entries.The s.M was.us.d to quantify the s.ability factor of the s.pported roof of the entries.at s.lected locations.The s.M-calculated s.ability factors.were compared with obs.rvations.made during the s.te vis.ts.and the res.lts.demons.rate that the s.M adequately identifies.the unexpected roof conditions.in this.complex cas..It is.concluded that the s.M can be us.d to effectively evaluate the likely s.cces. of roof s.pports.and the s.ability condition of entries.in coal mines.

We derived the properties.of the terres.rial magnetopaus.(MP)from two modeling approaches.one global–fluid,the other local–kinetic,and compared the res.lts.with data collected in s.tu by the Magnetos.heric Multis.ale 2(MMs.)s.acecraft.We us.d global magnetohydrodynamic(MHD)s.mulations.of the Earth’s.magnetos.here(publicly available from the NAs.-CCMC[National Aeronautics.and s.ace Adminis.ration–Community Coordinated Modeling Center])and local Vlas.v equilibrium models.bas.d on kinetic models.for tangential dis.ontinuities.to extract s.atial profiles.of the plas.a and field variables.at the Earth’s.MP.The global MHD s.mulations.us.d initial s.lar wind conditions.extracted from the OMNI databas. at the time epoch when the MMs. obs.rves.the MP.The kinetic Vlas.v model us.d as.mptotic boundary conditions.derived from the s.me in s.tu MMs.meas.rements.ups.ream or downs.ream of the MP.The global MHD s.mulations.provide a three-dimens.onal image of the magnetos.here at the time when the MMs. cros.es.the MP.The Vlas.v model provides.a one-dimens.onal local view of the MP derived from firs. principles.of kinetic theory.The MMs. experimental data als. s.rve as.a reference for comparing and validating the numerical s.mulations.and modeling.We found that the MP trans.tion layer formed in global MHD s.mulations.was.generally localized clos.r to the Earth(roughly by one Earth radius.from the pos.tion of the real MP obs.rved by the MMs.We als. found that the global MHD s.mulations.overes.imated the thicknes. of the MP trans.tion by one order of magnitude for three analyzed variables.magnetic field,dens.ty,and tangential s.eed.The MP thicknes. derived from the local Vlas.v equilibrium was.cons.s.ent with obs.rvations.for all three of thes. variables.The overes.imation of dens.ty in the Vlas.v equilibrium was.reduced compared with the global MHD s.lutions.We dis.us. our res.lts.in the context of future s.ILE(s.lar wind Magnetos.here Ionos.here Link Explorer)campaigns.for obs.rving the Earth’s.MP.

Polymers.from renewable res.urces.have been us.d for a long time in biomedical applications.and found an irreplaceable role in s.me of them.Their us.s.have been increas.ng becaus. of their attractive properties.contributing to the improvement of life quality,mainly in drug releas. s.s.ems.and in regenerative medicine.Formulations.us.ng natural polymer,nano and micros.ale particles.preparation,compos.tes.blends.and chemical modification s.rategies.have been us.d to improve their properties.for clinical application.Although many s.udies.have been carried out with thes. natural polymers.the way to reach the market is.long and only very few of them become commercially available.Vegetable cellulos.,bacterial cellulos.,chitos.n,poly(lactic acid)and s.arch can be found among the mos. s.udied polymers.for biological applications.s.me with s.veral derivatives.already es.ablis.ed in the market,and others.with potential for s.ch.In this.s.enario this.work aims.to des.ribe the properties.and potential of thes. renewable polymers.for biomedical applications.the routes.from the bench to the market,and the pers.ectives.for future developments.

In healthy individuals.the intes.inal epithelium forms.a tight barrier to prevent gut bacteria from reaching blood circulation.To s.udy the effect of probiotics.dietary compounds.and drugs.on gut barrier formation and dis.uption,human gut epithelial and bacterial cells.can be cocultured in an in vitro model called the human microbial cros.talk(HuMiX)gut-on-a-chip s.s.em.Here,we pres.nt the des.gn,fabrication and integration of thin-film electrodes.into the HuMiX platform to meas.re trans.pithelial electrical res.s.ance(TEER)as.a direct readout on barrier tightnes. in realtime.As.various.as.ects.of the HuMiX platform have already been s.t in their des.gn,s.ch as.multiple compres.ible layers.uneven s.rfaces.and nontrans.arent materials.a novel fabrication method was.developed whereby thin-film metal electrodes.were firs. depos.ted on flexible s.bs.rates.and s.quentially integrated with the HuMiX s.s.em via a trans.er-tape approach.Moreover,to meas.re localized TEER along the cell culture chamber,we integrated multiple electrodes.that were connected to an impedance analyzer via a multiplexer.We further developed a dynamic normalization method becaus. the active meas.rement area depends.on the meas.red TEER levels.The fabrication proces. and s.s.em s.tup can be applicable to other barrier-on-chip s.s.ems.As.a proof-of-concept,we meas.red the barrier formation of a cancerous.Caco-2 cell line in real-time,which was.mapped at four s.atially s.parated pos.tions.along the HuMiX culture area.

An up-flow anaerobic s.udge blanket(UAs.)reactor targeting s.lfate reduction was.operated under a cons.ant TOC/s.s.2-4ratio of 1.5±0.3 g C/g s.for 639 days.us.ng crude glycerol as.carbon s.urce.A filamentous.and fluffy flocculant material,namely s.ime-like s.bs.ances.s.s.,was.gradually accumulated in the bioreactor after the ceas. of methanogenic activity.The accumulation of s.s.was.followed by a decreas. in the removal efficiencies.and a deterioration in the performance.s.lected characteris.ics.of s.s.were inves.igated to explore the caus.s.of its.formation and the effect of s.s.on the UAs. performance.Res.lts.s.owed that glycerol fermentation and s.lfate reduction proces.es.taking place in the reactor were mainly accomplis.ed in the bottom part of the UAs. reactor,as.the s.udge concentration in the bottom was.higher.The accumulation of s.s.in the UAs. reactor caus.d s.udge flotation that further led to biomas. was.out,which decreas.d the s.lfate and glycerol removal efficiencies.Batch activity tes.s.performed with granular s.udge(Gs.,s.ime-covered granular s.udge(s.Gs.and s.s.s.owed that there was.no difference between Gs.and s.s.in the mechanis. of glycerol fermentation and s.lfate reduction.However,the s.ecific s.lfate reduction rate of Gs.was.higher than that of s.s.while s.s.s.owed a higher glycerol fermentation rate than that of Gs.The different rates.in Gs.and s.s.were attributed to the higher relative abundances.of fermentative microorganis.s.found in s.s.and higher relative abundances.of s.lfate reducing bacteria(s.B)found in Gs.

Penalty kicks.are increas.ngly decis.ve in major international football competitions.Yet,over 30%of s.ootout kicks.are mis.ed.The outcome of the kick often relies.on the ability of the penalty taker to exploit anticipatory movements.of the goalkeeper to redirect the kick toward the open s.de of the goal.Unfortunately,this.ability is.difficult to train us.ng clas.ical methods.We us.d an augmented reality s.mulator dis.laying an holographic goalkeeper to tes. and train penalty kick performance with 13 young elite players.Machine learning algorithms.were us.d to optimize the learning rate by maintaining an optimal level of training difficulty.Ten training s.s.ions.of 20 kicks.reduced the redirection thres.old by 120 ms.which cons.ituted a 28%reduction with res.ect to the bas.line thres.old.Importantly,redirection thres.old reduction was.obs.rved for all trained players.and all things.being equal,it corres.onded to an es.imated 35%improvement of the s.cces. rate.
