Plasmonics for solid-state lighting: enhanced excitation and directional emission of highly efficient light sources

Light sources based on reliable and energy-efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are instrumental in the development of solid-statelighting (ssL). Most research efforts in ssL have focused on improving both the intrinsic quantum efficiency (QE) and the stability oflight emitters. For this reason, it is broadly accepted that with the advent of highly efficient (QE close to 1) and stable emitters, thefundamental research phase of ssL is coming to an end. In this study, we demonstrate a very large improvement in ssL emission (above70-fold directional enhancement for p-polarized emission and 60-fold enhancement for unpolarized emission) using nanophotonicstructures. This is attained by coupling emitters with very high QE to collective plasmonic resonances in periodic arrays of aluminumnanoantennas. Our results open a new path for fundamental and applied research in ssL in which plasmonic nanostructures are able tomold the spectral and angular distribution of the emission with unprecedented precision.

Multifocal intraocular lenses(IOLs) are currently usually implanted for the treatment of cataracts because they have been proved to be superior to monofocal IOLs with respect to spectacle independence. In turn, they are associated with a higher prevalence of dysphotopsia symptoms that is one of the most common causes of patient dissatisfaction. Neuroadaptation seems to play a major role in the optimal adaptation to multifocal IOLs. In this context, the development of strategies that facilitate the neuroadaptation process to multifocality might be an effective strategy to reduce patients' dissatisfaction. Video games have been proved to be effective for the improvement of visual acuity and for the promotion of neuroplasticity in elderly subjects and other populations with cortical-related visual impairment. This narrative review highlights the physiological potential of video games as a perceptual strategy to improve visual acuity and promote neuroplasticity in patients using multifocalIOLs, although research is still needed to confirm these benefits in this specific population, with only one comparative study to this date providing evidence of them.

Cardiovascular diseases(CVDs)are the leading cause of death *** are a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels and include coronary heart disease,cerebrovascular disease and rheumatic heart disease among other *** are multiple independent risk factors for CVD,including hypertension,age,smoking,insulin resistance,elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C)levels,and triglyceride ***-C levels have traditionally been the target for therapies aimed at reducing CVD *** density lipoprotein(HDL)constitutes the only lipoprotein fraction with atheroprotective *** HDL-targeted therapies have focused on increasing HDL-C ***,clinical trials have shown that raising HDL-C with niacin failed to achieve CVD reduction.A possible explanation for these findings is that these drugs could interfere with lipid metabolism and cause alterations in HDL structure and composition,leading to loss of *** a result,targeting HDL-C levels would be insufficient to achieve CVD risk reduction,making HDL functionality a more desirable focus for HDL-directed *** are several drugs which show the potential to improve HDL *** drugs include molecules already approved for human use,such as statins and niacin,and particularly,compounds currently undergoing development such as apolipoprotein A-I mimetics and reconstituted HDL *** therapies show promising potential to improve HDL functionality *** therapeutic strategies should incorporate HDL functionality as a main target of interest.

The strong societal demand to reduce pesticide use and adaptation to climate change challenges the capacities of phenotyping new varieties in the ***-throughput phenotyping is a way to obtain meaningful and reliable information on hundreds of genotypes in a limited *** evaluated traits related to growth in 209 genotypes from an interspecific grapevine biparental cross,between IJ119,a local genitor,and Divona,both in summer and in winter,using several methods:fresh pruning wood weight,exposed leaf area calculated from digital images,leaf chlorophyll concentration,and LiDAR-derived apparent *** high-density genetic information obtained by the genotyping by sequencing technology(GBs),we detected 6 regions of the grapevine genome[quantitative trait loci(QTL)]associated with the variations of the traits in the *** detection of statistically significant QTLs,as well as correlations(R^(2))with traditional methods above 0.46,shows that LiDAR technology is effective in characterizing the growth features of the *** calculated with LiDAR-derived total canopy and pruning wood volumes were high,above 0.66,and stable between growing *** variables provided genetic models explaining up to 47%of the phenotypic variance,which were better than models obtained with the exposed leaf area estimated from images and the destructive pruning weight *** results highlight the relevance of LiDAR-derived traits for characterizing genetically induced differences in grapevine growth and open new perspectives for high-throughput phenotyping of grapevines in the vineyard.

The L1014F mutation in the voltage-sodium channel gene has been associated with resistance to DDT and pyrethroids in various arthropod species including mosquitoes. We determined the frequency of the L1014F kdr mutation in 16 field populations of Culex quinquefasciatus from Northeastern Mexico collected between 2008 and 2013. The L1014F was present in all populations analyzed with the lowest frequency （3.33%） corresponding to the population from Monclova collected in 2012, and the highest frequency （63.63%） from the Monterrey population collected in 2012. The presence of a kdr mutation in populations of Cx. quinquefasciatus from northeastern Mexico provides evidence ofpyrethroid resistance. This requires a special attention, considering that pyrethroid-based insecticides are commonly used in vector-control campaigns, especially against Aedes aegypti （L.）.
