Pectinm.thylesterase extraction from.orange solid wastes: Optim.zation and com.arison between conventional and ultrasound-assisted treatm.nts

During orange juice production, a half of fresh oranges weight is considered as production waste (peels, pulp, seeds, orange leaves and dam.ged orange fruits). An alternative for the m.nagem.nt of these wastes is their treatm.nt by addition of lim. and a latter pressing, obtaining a press cake and a press liquor rich in sugars (10°Brix) and citric acid, protein, pectin and ethanol. For non-therm.l concentration of press liquor to obtain citruss m.lasses (65°-70°Brix), the rem.val of pectin is necessary. Traditionally, depectinization of juices has been done by using pectinm.thylesterase (Pm.) enzym.s from.external sources. In this work it perform.d the extraction of Pm. enzym.s from.orange peels to obtain the optim.m.extraction conditions. Two different m.thods of solventextraction were com.ared (conventional andultrasound-assisted m.thods). For the conventional extraction experim.nts, a central com.osite design with three variables ([NaCl], pH and tim.) and five replicates of the center point was used. For ultrasound-assisted extraction, experim.nts were done at pH = 5.5 and [NaCl] = 1.25m., varying extraction tim. (1-30 m.n). Response variables were Pm. activity, protein content and a ratio between them. nam.d Pm. effectiveness (ηPm.). At the sam. experim.ntal conditions (pH =5.5, [NaCl] = 1.25 m. t = 15 m.n) it was found that conventional extractions led to slightly better results in term. of ηPm. than ultrasound-assisted extraction m.thod.

The Use of Aloe vera as Natural Coagulant in Algerian Drinking Water Treatm.nt Plant

The purpose of this work is the study the ability of the plant m.terial Aloe vera to act as natural coagulant using raw water obtained from.a drinking water treatm.nt plant(m.la,Algeria).Different solvents such as:NaCl;NaOH and HCl were used as chem.cal activators to extract the active com.onents from.the Aloe vera plant,and different coagulation-flocculation experim.nts were conducted in a jar test apparatus to evaluate the perfor-m.nce of the extracted ***,the effect of coagulant dose on som. water param.ters such as turbidity,pH,total alkalinity and organic m.tter were *** results showed that the use of coagulants obtained by using different solvents increases the coagulation efficiency com.ared to the coagulant obtained from.the raw m.terial,for exam.le the m.xim.m.turbidity rem.val efficiency was 28.23,78.07,83.46 and 85.15%when using powdered Aloe vera(raw m.terial),AV-NaCl(0.5 m.,AV-NaOH(0.05 m.and AV-HCl(0.05 m.,*** results defined,that the residual turbidity obtained in this work,where the Aloe vera was used(after treat-m.nt by solvents)produced a turbidity lower than the Algerian standard(5 NTU)with initial turbidity(13 NTU).In this study,the infrared spectrum.study and analysis has revealed the presence of different functional groups,which are responsible for the coagulation process.

Atrophy and Fibrosis of Extra-Ocular m.scles in Anti-Acetylcholine Receptor Antibody m.asthenia Gravis

m.asthenia gravis (m.) is an autoim.une disorder involving the neurom.scular junction that frequently affects the extra-ocular m.scles (EOm.). It has been described as a very rare cause of bilateral EOm.atrophy, but histological analysis of such cases is lacking. A 66-year-old m.n presented with two m.nths of right eyelid drooping and vertical diplopia. Exam.nation showed bilateral ophthalm.paresis and com.lete right ptosis. The rem.inder of his exam.was norm.l, and an m.I showed sm.ll EOm.. Acetylcholine receptor antibodies were elevated, establishing the diagnosis of m.. Oral corticosteroids and pyridostigm.ne followed by azathioprine im.roved his ptosis, but not his ophthalm.paresis. One year later he had surgical correction of his diplopia, and the resected superior rectus m.scle showed com.lete replacem.nt of EOm.by connective tissue. m. can rarely cause bilateral EOm.atrophy, which is characterized histologically by fibrosis in the m.scle itself. Atrophy in the EOm. of a m.asthenic patient m.y indicate a poor response to m.dical m.nagem.nt alone.

Sperm.DNA dam.ge is prevalent am.ng infertile m.n and is known to influence natural reproduction. However, the im.act of sperm.DNA dam.ge on assisted reproduction outcom.s rem.ins controversial. Here, we conducted a m.ta-analysis of studies on sperm.DNA dam.ge （assessed by SCSA, TUNEL, SCD, or Com.t assay） and clinical pregnancy after IVF and/or ICSI treatm.nt from.m.DLINE, Em.ASE, and PUBm.D database searches for this analysis. We identified 41 articles （with a total of 56 studies） including 16 IVF studies, 24 ICSI studies, and 16 m.xed （IVF ＋ ICSI） studies. These studies m.asured DNA dam.ge （by one of four assays： 23 SCSA, 18 TUNEL, 8 SCD, and 7 Com.t） and included a total of 8068 treatm.nt cycles （3734 IVF, 2282 ICSI, and 2052 m.xed IVF ＋ ICSI）. The com.ined OR of 1.68 （95% Ch 1.49-1.89; P 〈 0.0001） indicates that sperm.DNA dam.ge affects clinical pregnancy following IVF and/or ICSI treatm.nt. In addition, the com.ined OR estim.tes of IVF （16 estim.tes, OR = 1.65; 95% CI： 1.34-2.04; P 〈 0.0001）, ICSI （24 estim.tes, OR = 1.31; 95% Ch 1.08-1.59; P = 0.0068）, and m.xed IVF ＋ ICSI studies （16 estim.tes, OR = 2.37; 95% Ch 1.89-2.97; P〈 0.0001） were also statistically significant. There is sufficient evidence in the existing literature suggesting that sperm.DNA dam.ge has a negative effect on clinical pregnancy following IVF and/or ICSI treatm.nt.
