Agro-Industrial Waste as a Source of Raw Material:Eggshell and Ash of Agave salmiana Useful for the Synthesis of Hydroxyapatite

Agave salmiana ash and poultry eggshell powder as CaO sources were used for obtaining nanostructured hydro-xyapatite(HAP).The synthesis was carried out by the Green Chemistry Hydrothermal Biosynthesis at 180℃ with a pH of 5,by reacting CaO from Agave Salmiana ash and Eggshell powder,with dibasic caldium phosphate(CaH-PO_(4)+2H_(2)O)in an aqueous solution,with Aloe barbadensis extract.The product was characterized by X-ray dif-fraction,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR),Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM),and Transmission Electron Microscopy(TEM).The size and shape of the hydroxyapatite particles changed dramati-cally in the presence of Aloe barbadensis.Large crystals of Hydroxyapatite were observed when Eggshell powder and Agave salmiana ash were used as raw materials in the presence of the Aloe barbadensis surfactant.Crystals with shapes of ribbons and plates from 1 micrometers to 8 micrometers were observed when using the eggshell powder in the presence of Aloe bar badensis and,in the case of Agave salmiana ash in the presence of Aloe bar-badensis,crystals with shapes of quadra ngular prisms and hexagonal(polyhedra)with sizes from 2 micrometers to 20 micrometers were observed.Hydroxyapatite was therefore successfully biosynthesized by a green and sus-tainable method that reduces the environmental impact.

Potential role of the IL-33/ST2 axis in celiac disease

The IL-33/ST2 axis has been implicated in the pathogenesis of several tissue-specific autoimmune diseases. Celiac disease （CD） is the only autoimmune disease in which both the major genetic factors （HLA-DQ2/DQ8） and etiologic ones （dietary gluten） for susceptibility are known. We have measured serum levels and determined intestinal tissue expression of IL-33 and its receptor soluble ST2 in patients with CD to investigate their association with disease activity. Serum and tissue levels of both IL-33 and sST2 were significantly higher in patients with CD compared with those in control patients without CD. We show that toxic peptides extracted from barley and wheat gliadin significantly stimulate the production of IL-33 and ST2 in cultured peripheral blood mononuclear cell from celiac patients, strongly implicating the IL-33/ST2 axis in the pathogenesis of CD. The higher levels of IL-33 and its receptor ST2 in tissue and serum reflect an active inflammatory state and may represent a potential biomarker for disease activity. A better understanding of IL-33/ ST2 release, mode of action, and regulation will be crucial to develop therapeutics that target the IL-33/ST2 pathway to treat CD.

Secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine(SPARC)induces epithelial-mesenchymal transition,enhancing migration and invasion,and is associated with high Gleason score in prostate cancer

Secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine(SPARC)is a matricellular protein highly expressed in bone tissue that acts as achemoattractant factor promoting the arrival of prostate cancer(PCa)cells to the bone marrow.However,the contribution of SPARCduring the early stages of tumor progression remains unclear.In this study,we show that SPARC is highly expressed in PCa tissueswith a higher Gleason score.Through stable knockdown and overexpression of SPARC in PC3 and LNCaP cells,respectively,here wedem on strate that en doge nous SPARC induces the epithelial-mesenchymal tran sition(EMT),decreasing E-cadheri n and cytokeratin18 and increasing N-cadheri n and vime ntin.Moreover,SPARC in duces the expression of EMT regulatory tran scription factors Snailfamily transcriptional repressor 1(Snail),Snail family transcriptional repressor 2(Slug),and zinc finger E-box binding homeobox 1(Zeb1).In addition,SPARC knockdown in PC3 cells decreases migration and invasion in vitro,without modifying cell proliferation.Our results indicate that SPARC might facilitate tumor progression by modifying the cellular phenotype in cancer cells.

Spatiotemporal patterns of burned areas,fire drivers,and fire probability across the equatorial Andes

Field-based fire studies in the equatorial Andes indicate that fires are strongly associated with biophysical and anthropogenic variables.However,fire controls and fire regimes at the regional scale remain undocumented.Therefore,this paper describes spatial and temporal burned-area patterns,identifies biophysical and anthropogenic fire drivers,and quantifies fire probability across 6°of latitude and 3°of longitude in the equatorial Andes.The spatial and temporal burned-area analysis was carried out based on 18 years(2001-2018)of the MCD64 A1 MODIS burned-area product.Climate,topography,vegetation,and anthropogenic variables were integrated in a logistic regression model to identify the significance of explanatory variables and determine fire occurrence probability.A total of 5779 fire events were registered during the 18 years of this study,located primarily along the western cordillera of the Andes and spreading from North to South.Eighty-eight percent of these fires took place within two fire hotspots located in the northwestern and southwestern corners of the study area.Ninety-nine percent occurred during the second part of the year,between June and December.The largest density of fires was primarily located on herbaceous vegetation and shrublands.Results show that mean monthly temperature,precipitation and NDVI during the prefire season,the location of land cover classes such as forest and agriculture,distance to roads and urban areas,slope,and aspect were the most important determinants of spatial and temporal fire distribution.The logistic regression model achieved a good accuracy in predicting fire probability(80%).Probability was higher in the southwestern and northern corners of the study area,and lower towards the north in the western and eastern piedmonts of the Andes.This analysis contributes to the understanding of fires in mountains within the tropics.The results here presented have the potential to contribute to fire management and control in the region.

A Data Mining Approach to Detecting Bias and Favoritism in Public Procurement

In a public procurement process,corruption can occur at each stage,favoring a participant with a previous agreement,which can result in over-pricing and purchases of substandard products,as well as gender discrimination.This paper’s aim is to detect biased purchases using a Spanish Language corpus,ana-lyzing text from the questions and answers registry platform by applicants in a public procurement process in Ecuador.Additionally,gender bias is detected,pro-moting both men and women to participate under the same conditions.In order to detect gender bias and favoritism towards certain providers by contracting enti-ties,the study proposes a unique hybrid model that combines Artificial Intelli-gence algorithms and Natural Language Processing(NLP).In the experimental work,303,076 public procurement processes have been analyzed over 10 years(since 2010)with 1,009,739 questions and answers to suppliers and public insti-tutions in each process.Gender bias and favoritism were analyzed using a Word2-vec model with word embedding,as well as sentiment analysis of the questions and answers using the VADER algorithm.In 32%of cases(96,984 answers),there was favoritism or gender bias as evidenced by responses from contracting entities.The proposed model provides accuracy rates of 88% for detecting favor-itism,and 90%for detecting gender bias.Consequently one-third of the procure-ment processes carried out by the state have indications of corruption and bias.In Latin America,government corruption is one of the most significant challenges,making the resulting classifier useful for detecting bias and favoritism in public procurement processes.

The mechanisms that regulate disease progression during hepatitis C virus(HCV)infection and the response to treatment are not clearly identified.Numerous studies have demonstrated that a strong host immune response against HCV favors HCV clearance.In addition,genetic factors and metabolic machinery,particularly cholesterol modulation,are involved in HCV infection.It is likely that the interplay between all of these factors contributes to the outcome of HCV infection.In recent years,the world has experienced its largest epidemic of obesity.Mexico and the United States are the leading sufferers from this epidemic at the global level.Obesity is associated with the development ofnumerous pathologies including hypercholesterolemia which is one of the eight most important risk factors for mortality in Mexico.This may be related to the course of HCV infection in this population.Here,we focus on the urgent need to study the progression of HCV infection in relation to ethnic characteristics.Discoveries are discussed that hold promise in identifying immune,metabolic and genetic factors that,in conjunction,could be therapeutic targets or predictors of the progression of HCV infection.

In this study,we focus on the alteration of the programmed cell death 1(PD-1)/PD-L1 pathway in celiac disease.We discuss the diverse roles of the PD-1 pathway in regulating immune responses and how this knowledge can improve celiac disease(CD)autoimmunity.The PD-1 and PD-L1 levels in the serum and in intestinal biopsies of CD patients may be relevant to the determination of a possible correlation between markers of the autoimmune response,inflammation,and disease activity.

Objectives:To determine whether air pollution or changes in SARS-CoV-2 lineages lead to an increase in mortality.Methods:Descriptive statistics were used to calculate rates of infection(2020-2021).RT ePCR was used to compare viral loads from October 2020 to February 2021.Nextgeneration sequencing(NGS)(n=92)was used to examine and phylogenetically map SARS-CoV-2 lineages.A correlative“air pollution/temperature”index(I)was developed using regression analysis.PM_(2.5),PM_(10),O_(3),NO_(2),SO_(2),and CO concentrations were analyzed and compared to the mortality.Results:The mortality rate during the last year was~32%.Relative SARS-CoV-2 viral loads increased in December 2020 and January 2021.NGS revealed that approximately 80%of SARS-CoV-2 linages were B.1.243(33.7%),B1.1.222(11.2%),B.1.1(9%),B.1(7%),B.1.1.159(7%),and B.1.2(7%).Two periods were analyzed,the prehigh-and high-mortality periods and no significant lineage differences or new lineages were found.Positive correlations of air pollution/temperature index values with mortality were found for IPM_(2.5) and IPM_(10).INO_(2).ISO_(2),and ICO but not for O_(3).Using ICO,we developed a model to predict mortality with an estimated variation of~±5 deaths per day.

Comparison of Nine Membrane Pairs for Electrodialytic Removal of Nitrate Ions

Electrodialysis (ED) of NaNO3 solutions was performed to stress the role of the membrane pair as a unit i.e. the behavior as a whole of Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) and Cation Exchange Membrane (CEM), in the process at room temperature. The membrane pair was also tested in the reclamation of nitric acid and sodium hydroxide. It was found that the membrane pair ranking in Limiting Current Density does not agree with that of ions leakage and both rankings are not the same as for Current Efficiency or Specific Power Consumption, each parameter for a specific membrane pair depends on the associated membrane and at a lesser degree on the flow rate. Results show that one cannot select a membrane or a membrane pair only by its limiting current density i.e. it is necessary to evaluate several parameters of the process by characterizing the whole membrane pair and to decide the parameter of interest, i.e. denitrification speed, ions leakage, proton back migration, current efficiency or specific power consumption.

In recent years,growing awareness of the role of oxidative stress in brain health has prompted antioxidants,especially dietary antioxidants,to receive growing attention as possible treatments strategies for patients with neurodegenerative diseases(NDs).The most widely studied dietary antioxidants include active substances such as vitamins,carotenoids,flavonoids and polyphenols.Dietary antioxidants are found in usually consumed foods such as fresh fruits,vegetables,nuts and oils and are gaining popularity due to recently growing awareness of their potential for preventive and protective agents against NDs,as well as their abundant natural sources,generally non-toxic nature,and ease of long-term consumption.This review article examines the role of oxidative stress in the development of NDs,explores the‘two-sidedness’of the blood-brain barrier(BBB)as a protective barrier to the nervous system and an impeding barrier to the use of antioxidants as drug medicinal products and/or dietary antioxidants supplements for prevention and therapy and reviews the BBB permeability of common dietary antioxidant suplements and their potential efficacy in the prevention and treatment of NDs.Finally,current challenges and future directions for the prevention and treatment of NDs using dietary antioxidants are discussed,and useful information on the prevention and treatment of NDs is provided.
