Molecular evaluation of glutathione s transferase family genes in patients with sporadic colorectal cancer

AIM To evaluate the association between polymorphismsin glutathione s transferases(GsTs) and the risk of sporadic colorectal cancer(sCRC), tumor progression and the survival of *** A case-control study of 970 individuals from the Brazilian population was conducted(232 individuals from the case group with colorectal cancer and 738 individuals from the control group without a history of cancer). PCR multiplex and PCR-RFLP techniques were used to genotype the GsT polymorphisms. The tumors were categorized according to the TNM classification: tumor extension(T), affected lymph nodes(N), and presence of metastasis(M). Logistic regression, multiple logistic regression and survival analysis were used to analyze the data. The results are presented in terms of odds ratio(OR) and 95% confidence interval(CI). The level of significance was set at 5%(P ≤ 0.05).REsULTs Age equal to or over 62 years(OR = 8.79; 95%CI: 5.90-13.09, P ssociated with increased risk of sCRC. Analysis of the polymorphisms revealed an association between the GsTM1 polymorphisms and a risk of sCRC(OR = 1.45; 95%CI: 1.06-2.00; P = 0.02), as well as between GsTT1 and a reduced risk of the disease(OR = 0.65; 95%CI: 0.43-0.98; P = 0.04). An interaction between the presence of the wild-type allele of GsTP1 Ile105 Val polymorphism and tobacco consumption on risk of sCRC(OR = 2.33; 95%CI: 1.34-4.05; P = 0.05) was observed. There was an association between the GsTM1 null genotype and the presence of advanced tumors(OR = 2.33; 95%CI: 1.23-4.41; P = 0.009), as well as increased risk of sCRC in the presence of a combination of GsTT1 non-null/GsTM1 null genotypes(OR = 1.50; 95%CI: 1.03-2.19; P = 0.03) and GsTT1 non-null/GsTM1 null/GsTP1 Val~*(OR = 1.85; 95%CI: 1.01-3.36, P = 0.04). Brazilian adolescents’ food and beverages choices during school break: The Brazilian school meal program or food from other establishments?

The purpose of this study was to identify the adolescents’ food preferences during school break. This was a qualitative cross-sectional study with 83 adolescents from a public school in the city of s?o Paulo. The participants answered the following question: During the school break do you usually eat or drink something? Please justify your answer. The adolescents’ answers were analyzed through a Brazilian qualitative technique called Discourse of the Collective subject. The ideas were: school Meal Program (36.2%), don’t eat anything (26.7%), bring from other establishments (20.1%) and drink water or juice (17.1%). The adolescents who chose the school Meal Program claimed they had no other options. On the other hand, the participants who refused the meal did so because they disliked it and as a result brought snacks from home or food markets. The Discourse of the Collective subject helps the investigator to understand the ideas related to food and nutrition of a collectivity.

Compared efficacy of preservation solutions on the outcome of liver transplantation:Meta-analysis

AIM To compare the effects of the four most commonly used preservation solutions on the outcome of liver *** A systematic literature search was performed using MEDLINE, scopus, EMBAsE and the Cochrane Library databases up to January 31^(st), 2017. The inclusion criteria were comparative, randomized controlled trials(RCTs) for deceased donor liver(DDL) allografts with adult and pediatric donors using the gold standard University of Wisconsin(UW) solution or histidinetryptophan-ketoglutarate(HTK), Celsior(Cs) and Institut Georges Lopez(IGL-1) solutions. Fifteen RCTs(1830 livers) were included; the primary outcomes were primary non-function(PNF) and one-year posttransplant graft survival(OGs-1). REsULTs All trials were homogenous with respect to donor and recipient characteristics. There was no statistical difference in the incidence of PNF with the use of UW, HTK, Cs and IGL-1(RR = 0.02, 95%CI: 0.01-0.03, P = 0.356). Comparing OGs-1 also failed to reveal any difference between UW, HTK, Cs and IGL-1(RR = 0.80, 95%CI: 0.80-0.80, P = 0.369). Two trials demonstrated higher PNF levels for UW in comparison with the HTK group, and individual studies described higher rates of biliary complications where HTK and Cs were used compared to the UW and IGL-1 solutions. However, the meta-analysis of the data did not prove a statistically significant difference: the UW, Cs, HTK and IGL-1 solutions were associated with nearly equivalent *** Alternative solutions for UW yield the same degree of safety and effectiveness for the preservation of DDLs, but further well-designed clinical trials are warranted.

The spectral fluorescence characteristics of extracts leaves embedded in silica xerogel matrix promoted by aged time was studied. We obtain a higher PsII stability for extract of leaves embedded in xerogel matrix, with concentration of 8 g / 20 ml and water to TEOs molar ratio of 11, which remain bioactive over a very long period of time, whereas for a water to TEOs molar ratio of 5 a blue-shift fluorescence is observed indicating the PsII denaturizing and formation of fluorescing aggregates associated with the activation of carotenoids radicals.

strong>Aim:strong> The aim of this mixed methods research was to develop an educational comic booklet to prevent pregnant women’s exposure to secondhand smoke. strong>Methods:strong> We assessed the suitability of the comic booklet by measuring participant response to content, literacy demand, graphics, layout and typography, learning stimulation, motivation, and cultural appropriateness. The participants were 17 Indonesians living in Japan who were recruited through Respondent-Driven-sampling and met all criteria for the survey. Means and standard deviations were used to determine the suitability of the educational comic. strong>Results:strong> About 80% of participants rated the comic as “superior” on a rating scale with options of “superior”, “adequate”, “not suitable”, or “not applicable”. The most successful aspects of the comic were content and cultural appropriateness, as it provided clear contents and the graphics showed realistic Indonesian smoking behavior. The least successful aspect of the comic was the literacy demand because there were long sentences using difficult words. strong>Conclusions:strong> The results of this study may be used to conduct a randomized controlled trial using this comic booklet with some modifications.

Adsorption study of Acid Red 114 and Basic Blue 3 on sunflower stalk

The aim of this work was to evaluate the sunflower stalk (ss) as an adsorbent in the removal of red acid 114 (AR 114) and basic blue 3 (BB 3) in aqueous solutions, without any physicochemical treatment, where temperature and concentration were the studied variables. The research was developed by using the batch processing mode;the contact time was one hour, with constant agitation of 200 rpm and pH of 7000 ± 0.050, using a central composite design. The adsorbent was characterized through BET, sEM, acid sites and basic sites, charging point, and infrared. The results indicated that the sunflower stalk was a viable and economical alternative for the removal of water that had been contaminated by dyes, showing a better performance for the AR 114 dye, reaching a 71.96% of removal with respect to the initial load. In addition, the EPI Web software was used to model the environmental performance of colorants.

目的分析新制备的HER2靶向硼脂质体在细胞靶向、滞留及细胞内分布等方面的特性,探讨该脂质体作为靶向给药系统用于硼中子俘获治疗研究的可能性。方法分别从靶向剂Trastuzumab、脂质体和装载的WsA3个方面观察sKBR3细胞对125ITrastuzumabWsA3H脂质体的摄取与滞留。Trastuzumab标记了125I用伽玛计数器检测;脂质体标记了3H用液闪计数器检测;WsA用感应耦合等离子体质谱仪检测。激光共聚焦显微镜观察WsA在细胞内的分布。结果最初8h细胞对125ITrastuzumab的摄取量快速增加,24h后细胞内125I量反而有所下降。细胞对3H脂质体的摄取随培养时间而增加,直到48h也没有达到平台期。培养4、8及24h,细胞含硼量分别达到55、78及132×10-6。细胞摄取125ITrastuzumabWsA3H脂质体后,在普通培养液中培养24和48h,分别有90%、67%的WsA滞留在细胞内。激光共聚焦显微镜下显示大部分WsA位于细胞浆。结论细胞摄取量满意,WsA在细胞内滞留时间长,说明125ITrastuzumabWsA3H脂质体是一个很好的运载工具,有希望应用于硼中子俘获治疗研究。
