Tropical cyclone(TC)genesis prediction is a major scientific challenge to the TC operation and research *** report surveys the current status of TC genesis forecasts by a number of major operational centers covering the key ocean basins across both *** IWTC-9,we see an emergence of probabilistic TC genesis forecast products by operational centers,typically supported by the statistical processing of a combination of ensemble prediction and satellite analysis,covering time periods of couple of days to weeks *** prevalence of multi-center grand ensemble approach highlights the uncertainties involved and the forecast challenges in quantitative genesis *** operational practice might differ across agencies,verification efforts generally report a steady or slightly improving skill level in terms of reliability,which likely results from the continual improvement in global numerical weather prediction capability.

Thermomechanical Modelling of Industrial Vessels that Contain Refractory Masonry Linings

Some refractory linings that protect metallic vessels from the hot temperature of the products they contain are made of masonries with or without *** joints play an important role,reducing the stresses in the masonries during ***,the presence of these joints makes the behaviour of the masonry nonlinear and *** perform a thermomechanical simulation using a finite element method of an industrial vessel that contains hundreds or thousands of bricks and joints,microscopic models are not suitable due to the high computational time and the management of the behaviour of the joints(opening/closing)which affects the *** overcome these problems,it is proposed to replace the masonry by a homogeneous material that has a behaviour equivalent to the set of bricks and joints,using a periodic homogenization *** the joints can be closed or open,the equivalent material will have a different behaviour according to the joint ***,refractory materials have an elastic-viscoplastic behaviour at high ***,the equivalent material will have an orthotropic elastic-viscoplastic behaviour,requiring a nonlinear homogenisation *** overview of this approach developed at University of Orléans is presented with two industrial applications(blast-furnace and steel ladle).

Interests surrounding the development of on-chip nonlinear optical devices have been consistently growing in the past decades due to the tremendous applications,such as quantum photonics,all-optical communications,optical computing,on-chip metrology,and *** efficient on-chip nonlinear optical devices to meet the requirements of those applications brings the need for new directions to improve the existing photonic *** research has directed the field of on-chip nonlinear optics toward the hybrid integration of two-dimensional layered materials(such as graphene,transition metal dichalcogenides,and black phosphorous)with various integrated *** combination of well-known photonic chip design platforms(e.g.,silicon,silicon nitride)and different two-dimensional layered materials has opened the road for more versatile and efficient structures and devices,which has the great potential to unlock numerous new *** review discusses the modeling and characterization of different hybrid photonic integration structures with two-dimensional materials,highlights the current state of the art examples,and presents an outlook for future prospects.

Risk factors for fracture in adult kidney transplant recipients

AIM: To determine the general and transplant-specific risk factors for fractures in kidney transplant ***: We conducted a cohort study of all adults who received a kidney-only transplant(n = 2723) in Ontario, Canada between 2002 and 2009. We used multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression to determine general and transplant-specific risk factors for major fractures(proximal humerus, forearm, hip, and clinical vertebral). The final model was established using the backward elimination strategy, selecting risk factors with a P-value ≤ 0.2 and forcing recipient age and sex into the model. We also assessed risk factors for other fracture locations(excluding major fractures, and fractures involving the skull, hands or feet). RESULTS: There were 132 major fractures in the follow-up(8.1 fractures per 1000 person-years). General risk factors associated with a greater risk of major fracture were older recipient age [adjusted hazard ratio(a HR) per 5-year increase 1.11, 95%CI: 1.03-1.19] and female sex(a HR = 1.81, 95%CI: 1.28-2.57). Transplant-specific risk factors associated with a greater risk of fracture included older donor age(5-year increase)(a HR = 1.09, 95%CI: 1.02-1.17) and end-stage renal disease(ESRD) caused by diabetes(a HR = 1.72, 95%CI: 1.09-2.72) or cystic kidney disease(a HR = 1.73, 95%CI: 1.08-2.78)(compared to glomerulonephritis as the reference cause). Risk factors across the two fracture locations were not consistent(major fracture locations vs other). Specifically, general risk factors associated with an increased risk of other fractures were diabetes and a fall with hospitalization prior to transplantation, while length of time on dialysis, and renal vascular disease and other causes of ESRD were the transplant-specific risk factors associated with a greater risk of other ***: Both general and transplant-specific risk factors were associated with a higher risk of fractures in kidney transplant recipients.
