Influence of free water availability on a desert carnivore and herbivore

Anthropogenic manipulation of finite resources on the landscape to benefit individual species or communities is commonly employed by conservation and management agencies. One such action in arid regions is the construction and maintenance of water developments （i.e., wildlife guzzlers） adding free water on the landscape to buttress local populations, influence animal movements, or af- fect distributions of certain species of interest. Despite their prevalence, the utility of wildlife guzzlers remains largely untested. We employed a before-after control-impact （BACI） design over a 4-year period on the US Army Dugway Proving Ground, Utah, USA, to determine whether water avaijability at wildlife guzzlers influenced relative abundance of black-tailed jackrabbits Lepus californicus and relative use of areas near that resource by coyotes Canis latrans, and whether coyote visitations to guzzlers would decrease following elimination of water. Eliminating water availability at guzzlers did not influence jackrabbit relative abundance. Coyote relative use was impacted by water availability, with elimination of water reducing use in areas associated with our treatment, but not with areas associated with our control. Visitations of radio-collared coyotes to guzzlers declined nearly 3-fold following elimination of water. Our study provides the first evidence of a potential direct effect of water sources on a mammalian carnivore in an arid environment, but the ecological relevance of our finding is debatable. Future investigations aimed at determining water effects on terrestrial mam- mals could expand on our findings by incorporating manipulations of water availability, obtaining absolute estimates of population parameters and vital rates and incorporating fine-scale spatiotem- poral data.

Optical wavelength meter with machine learning enhanced precision

A photonic implementation of a wavelength meter typically applies an interferometer to measure the frequencydependent phase shift provided by an optical delay *** work shows that the information to be retrieved is encoded by a vector restricted to a circular cone within a 3D Cartesian object *** measured data belong to the image of the object space under a linear orthogonal *** impairments result in broken orthogonal symmetry,but the mapping remains *** circular cone is retained as the object space,which suggests that the conventional conic section fitting for the wavelength meter application is a premature reduction of the object space from R^(3)to R^(2).The inverse map,constructed by a learning algorithm,compensates impairments such as source intensity fluctuation and errors in delay time,coupler transmission,and photoreceiver sensitivity while being robust to *** simple algorithm does not require initial estimates for all parameters except for a broad bracket of the delay;further,weak nonlinearity introduced by uncertain delay can be corrected by a robust golden search *** phase-retrieval process is invariant to source power and its *** demonstrate that,to the extent that the ten parameters of the interferometer model capture all significant impairments,a precision limited only by the level of random noise is *** to measured data collected from a fabricated Si_(3)N_(4)wavelength meter,greater than an order of magnitude improvement in precision compared with the conventional method is achieved.

Complex peptide natural products exhibit diverse biological functions and a wide range of physico-chemical *** a result,many peptides have entered the clinics for various *** main routes for the biosynthesis of complex peptides have evolved in nature:ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptide(RiPP)biosynthetic pathways and non-ribosomal peptide synthetases(NRPSs).Insights into both bioorthogonal peptide biosynthetic strategies led to the establishment of universal principles for each of the two *** universal rules can be leveraged for the targeted identification of novel peptide biosynthetic blueprints in genome sequences and used for the rational engineering of biosynthetic pathways to produce non-natural *** this review,we contrast the key principles of both biosynthetic routes and compare the different biochemical strategies to install the most frequently encountered peptide *** addition,the influence of the fundamentally different biosynthetic principles on past,current and future engineering ap-proaches is *** the different biosynthetic principles of both peptide biosynthetic routes,the arsenal of characterized peptide modifications encountered in RiPP and NRPS systems is largely *** continuous expansion of the biocatalytic toolbox of peptide modifying enzymes for both routes paves the way towards the production of complex tailor-made peptides and opens up the possibility to produce NRPS-derived peptides using the ribosomal route and vice versa.

糖尿病相关的足病是造成糖尿病患者经济负担和增加社会成本的主要原因之一。本指南以主要目标为导向,以循证医学为依据,且在全球得到合理实施。践行国际糖尿病相关的足病指南对于减轻患者经济负担和社会成本有着重要影响。国际糖尿病足工作组(IWGDF)从1999年起开始发布并随后更新国际指南。2023年更新版指南相关推荐均基于推荐、评估、发展和评价分级(GRADE)系统,包括制定相关临床问题和重要结局,完成系统的文献系统综述和荟萃分析,完成评判表汇总,并且给予具体、明确、操作性强的推荐以及理论依据。本文阐述了《国际糖尿病足工作组:糖尿病相关的足病预防和管理指南(2023版)》(以下简称为指南)的制定过程。指南由7个部分组成,包括预防、糖尿病相关的足溃疡分类、减压、周围动脉病变、感染、创面愈合干预以及活动性夏科神经骨关节病,分别由7个独立的国际专家工作组编写。IWGDF编辑委员会对7个章节进行了整合和简化,形成IWGDF实践指南。指南中的每条推荐均经过IWGDF编辑委员会成员和相关领域的独立的国际专家审阅通过。本文是IWGDF指南的制定和方法学。我们相信,医务人员、公共卫生机构和政策制定者采用和实施2023年IWGDF指南,将会改善糖尿病相关的足病的预防和管理水平,从而减少全球该疾病患者和减轻该疾病引起的全球社会负担。

Estrogens play important roles in the development and progression of multiple tumor *** evidence points to the significance of estrogen action not only in tumors of hormonally regulated tissues such as the breast,endometrium and ovary,but also in the development of colorectal cancer(CRC).The effects of estrogens in physiological and pathophysiological conditions are mediated by the nuclear estrogen receptorsαandβ,as well as the membranebound G protein-coupled estrogen receptor(GPER).The roles of GPER in CRC development and progression,however,remain poorly *** on the functions of GPER in the colon have shown that this estrogen receptor regulates colonic motility as well as immune responses in CRC-associated diseases,such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative *** is also involved in cell cycle regulation,endoplasmic reticulum stress,proliferation,apoptosis,vascularization,cell migration,and the regulation of fatty acid and estrogen metabolism in CRC ***,multiple lines of evidence suggest that GPER may play an important role in colorectal *** this review,we present the current state of knowledge regarding the contribution of GPER to colon function and CRC.

Wheat yield prediction by zero sink and equilibrium-type soil phosphorus tests

Diffusive gradients in thin films(DGT)measurements have been shown to outperform other phosphorus(P)tests in soils with strong P sorption,but this has not been confirmed for moderately weathered European *** compared the performance of DGT in predicting wheat grain yield in Swedish long-term fertility experiments with those of standard intensity(water-extractable P(P-H2O))and quantity(ammonium lactate-extractable P(P-AL))tests.A Mitscherlich-type model was used to fit wheat yield response to P application rates(0,15,30 or 35,and 45 kg P ha-1 year-1)in each individual trial replicate to estimate the maximum *** trials with clear plateau-type yield responses and the goodness of fit(R2)>0.75,relative yields(RYs)were calculated for each P treatment and plotted against the soil P test results(n=143).The goodness of the Mitscherlich-type fits decreased in the following order:DGT-measured P(P-DGT)(R2=0.35)>P-H2O(R2=0.18)>P-AL(R2=0.13).When excluding soils with P-AL:P-DGT≥0.1 L g-1,R2 was considerably improved to 0.55 for P-AL,0.46 for P-H2O,and 0.65 for P-DGT(n=61).At 95%of maximum yield,the upper limit of P deficiency for P-DGT was 44.8(the soils with P-AL:P-DGT<0.1 L g-1)and 61.9μg L-1(all soils),falling within the range reported for other European and Australian soils(6.0–142μg L-1).We show that in the investigated Swedish soils,DGT performed better than the quantity and intensity tests,which is attributed to its ability to capture P diffusion and resupply from the soil solid phase,similar to plant roots in the rhizosphere.

Development and application of molecular gut-content analysis to detect aphid and coccinellid predation by Harmonia axyridis （Coleoptera： Coccinellidae）in Italy

Despite their positive effect in reducing pest populations, exotic generalist predators sometimes become invasive and contribute to the displacement of indigenous species in the same trophic level. Although laboratory experiments have linked intraguild predation （IGP） to these interactions, field evidence and quantification of IGP are still lacking for most systems. The recent establishment of the exotic Harmonia axyridis （Pallas）（Coleoptera： Coccinellidae） in Italy raises concern about the detrimental effect that the ladybird could have on native coccinellids. Here we assessed, under laboratory conditions, the acceptability and suitability of eggs of 2 native ladybirds, Adalia bipunctata L. and Oenopia conglobata （L.）, as prey items for H. axyridis larvae. Then we developed primers for molecular gut-content analysis to detect predation by H. axyridis on the 2 ladybirds and on the aphid Eucallipterus tiliae L. Species-specific 16S primers were developed for the 3 species and laboratory feeding trials were conducted to quantify the rate of prey DNA breakdown in the gut of//. axyridis. Moreover, to field evaluate primers, H. axyridis 4th instars （n = 132） were systematically collected from linden trees in northern Italy and screened for the presence of prey DNA. Seventy-three percent and 7% of field collected H. axyridis were positive for aphid and coccinellid DNA, respectively. Predation upon aphid and A. bipunctata was lower than predicted if density dependent consumption was expected, while predation upon O. conglobata was significantly higher. Here, we provided the first evidence of IGP among feral populations ofH. axyridis and indigenous ladybird beetles, occurring in Italy.

Background:Vestibular migraine(VM)is a common cause of dizziness that is underrecognized,underdiagnosed,and challenging to effectively *** prevalence,appropriate diagnostic workup,and therapies for VM in low-and lower-middle-income countries(LLMICs)remain *** objective of this scoping review is to evaluate the current state of VM research in ***:PubMed,Embase,and Web of Science databases were searched to execute a scoping review of ***“vestibular diseases”and“vertigo”were used in combination with terms referring to LLMICs as defined by the World *** and abstract screening,full-text review,and data collection were conducted by two authors ***:Twenty-six studies were included in the scoping *** studies were cross-sectional(57.7%)or case studies/series(23.1%)and were conducted in urban settings only(92.3%).Geographic distribution of studies was skewed,with 65.4%of articles originating from *** prevalence of VM among clinic patients ranged from 0.3%to 33.3%.VM most frequently presented as headache,nausea and vomiting,and *** imaging,audiometry,and electronystagmography/videonystagmography were the three most commonly utilized diagnostic modalities in the dizziness *** most studied pharmacotherapies included calcium channel blockers,followed by beta-blockers and *** studies and series discussed less common VM pharmacotherapies,such as ayurvedic ***:There is a need for more VM research in LLMICs,including innovative diagnostic approaches and therapies that can improve VM care *** partnerships between LLMIC and highincome country researchers must expand vestibular research capacity and productivity in LLMICs.
