Modern horizontal strain (2006-2016) measured along 56 new and 108 previously published GPS station baselines are used to establish the length (800 km) and width (300 - 400 km) of the central Cascadia convergent margin seismogenic structure. Across-margin (west-east) annual rates of shortening range from 10﹣9 a﹣1 at the eastern (landward) limit of the central Cascadia seismogenic structure to 10﹣7 a﹣1 along the western onshore portion of the interplate zone. Relatively high shortening strain rates (10﹣8 a﹣1 to 10﹣7 a﹣1) are also measured in western transects from the northern (Explorer plate) and southern (Gorda plate) segments of the convergent margin, demonstrating that the full length of the margin (1300 km length) is currently capable of sustaining and/or initiating a major great earthquake. Vertical GPS velocities are averaged over the last decade at 321 stations to map patterns of uplift (0 - 5 mm yr﹣1) and subsidence (0 - 9 mm yr﹣1) relative to the study area mean. Along-margin belts of relative uplift and subsidence, respectively, are approximately associated with Coast Ranges and the Cascade volcanic arc. However, the vertical velocity data are locally heterogeneous, demonstrating patchy “anomalies” within the larger along-margin belts. A large coastal subsidence anomaly occurs in southwest Washington where the modern short-term trend is reversed from the long-term (~200 yr) tidal marsh record of coastal uplift since the last co-seismic subsidence event (Ad1700). The modern vertical displacements represent a late stage of the current inter-seismic interval. If the horizontal strain is considered largely or fully elastic, extrapolating the modern strain rates over the last 100 years show the accumulated strains would be similar in magnitude to the observed co-seismic strains resulting from the Tōhoku, Japan, Mw 9.0 earthquake in 2011. Role of Multiple High-Capacity Irrigation Wells on a Surficial Sand and Gravel Aquifer

Within McHenry County, IL, the fastest growing county in Illinois, groundwater is used for 100% of the water needs. Concerns over water resources have prompted the investigation of the surficial sand and gravel aquifers of the county. While the eastern portion of the county is urbanizing, the western portion remains devoted to agriculture. High-capacity irrigation wells screened within the surficial sand and gravel aquifer are used for crop production. To assess the impacts of the irrigation wells on the aquifer, a groundwater flow model was developed to examine five different scenarios reflecting drought conditions and increased pumping. Results show that the surficial sand and gravel aquifer is capable of meeting current water demands even if recharge is decreased 20% and pumping is increased 20%. The additional loss of discharge and increases in pumping result in head differences throughout the aquifer.

The development of a new generation of nonantibody protein drug delivery systems requires site-directed conjugation strategies to produce homogeneous,reproducible and scalable *** that,the genetic addition of cysteine residues into solvent-exposed positions allows the thiol-mediated cysteine coupling of therapeutic drugs into protein-based ***,the high reactivity of unpaired cysteine residues usually reduces protein stability,consequently imposing the use of more methodologically demanding purification *** is especially relevant for disulfide-containing nanocarriers,as previously observed in ***,although many protein scaffolds and targeting ligands are also rich in disulfide bridges,the use of these methodologies over emerging non-antibody carrier proteins has been completely ***,we report the development of a simple and straightforward procedure for a onestep production and site-directed cysteine conjugation of disulfide-containing non-antibody thiolated carrier proteins(THIOCAPs).This method is validated in a fluorescent C-X-C chemokine receptor 4(CXCR4)-targeted multivalent nanocarrier containing two intramolecular disulfide bridges and one reactive cysteine residue strategically placed into a solvent-exposed position(THIO-T22-GFP-H6)for drug conjugation and in a humanized alternative intended for clinical applications(T22-HSNBT-H6).Thus,we produce very stable,homogeneous and fully functional antitumoral nanoconjugates(THIO-T22-GFP-H6-MMAE and T22-HSNBT-H6-MMAE)that selectively eliminate target cancer cells via ***,the developed methodology appears as a powerful tool for the rational engineering of emerging non-antibody,cell-targeted protein nanocarriers that contain disulfide bridges together with a solvent-exposed reactive cysteine(THIOCAP).This should pave the way for the development of a new generation of stable,homogeneous and efficient nanomedicines.

Exploring and interpreting the mode of cognition and behavioral patterns of prehistoric hunter-gatherers is always one of the main goals of current Paleolithic research. In the 1940s, French prehistorians proposed the technological method for studying lithic assemblages which opened a brand-new perspective on the prehistoric domain. In the 1960s, French ethnographer and anthropologist André Leroi-Gourhan proposed the concept "chane opératoire" and established the theory of lithic technological study. After the 1980s, the concept "chane opératoire" was substituted for two different but complementary concepts: techno-cognition and techno-economy, which contributed not only to revealing the technical knowledge and know-how applied during lithic production but also to interpreting the technical behavior of prehistoric hunter-gatherers from social and economic viewpoints. The lithic technological study of the Guanyindong site, presented in this paper, was carried out for the first time by applying lithic technological method developed by French prehistorians to the Chinese materials. Our analytical results demonstrated that the débitage system of Guanyindong is quite distinct from the concept Levallois largely used in Europe, Near-East and Africa. The differentiation between these two débitage modes may contribute to exploring and interpreting the relationship in Middle Paleolithic between China and Europe, Near-East and Africa.

Purpose The safety of creatine supplementation has been investigated,however,the safety of a high-dose/short-term or low-dose/long-term supplementation dosing scheme,combined with a resistance training program,a commonly used dosing scheme,has not yet *** aim of this study was to evaluate physical performance and the safety of the cited creatine supplementation dosing scheme in a double-blind placebo-controlled study by assessing blood and urine health indicators in subjects undertaking resistance *** Thirty-four healthy male subjects were randomly assigned to creatine supplement(CREA/7 days,0.3 g/kg body mass+21 days,0.03 g/kg)or placebo(PLA)group and both groups participated in a resistance training intervention(6 exercises,3 sets of 8-12 repetitions per exercise at 85%of 1RM,3 d/week).Blood and urine samples were collected pre-,7 and 30 days *** blood(26 parameters)and urine markers(15),between-group differences were calculated by using 2 groups(CREA and PLA)×2 measures(“POST7 minus PRE”and“POST30 minus PRE”)*** The CREA group exhibited significant body weight and 1RM increase(POST30 minus PRE)of all evaluated exercises,when compared to PLA *** the blood and urine health markers,only hematocrit,LdL,Uric Acid,Phosphatase Alkaline and Creatinine exhibited between-group differences,but with small magnitude of differences and maintained into the range of clinical reference *** Our data suggest that creatine supplementation the used dosing scheme,concomitantly with resistance training,improves physical performance with no evident risk or protection to health for young weightlifters.
