Would behavioral thermoregulation enable pregnant viviparous tropical lizards to cope with a warmer world?

Sceloporus lizards depend on external heat to achieve their preferred temperature(Tsel)for performing physiological *** both in the field and laboratory indicates that pregnant females of this Genus select body temperatures(Tb)lower than 34℃ as higher temperatures may be lethal to ***,thermoregulation is crucial for successful embryo *** the increase in global air temperature,it is expected that the first compensatory response of species that inhabit tropical climates will be behavioral *** tested whether viviparous Sceloporus formosus group lizards in the wild exhibited differences in thermoregulatory behavior to achieve the known Tsel for developing embryos regardless of local thermal *** quantified field active body temperature,thermoregulatory behavior mechanisms(time of sighting,microhabitat used and basking time)and available microhabitat thermal conditions(*** temperature)for 10 lizard species during gestation,distributed along an altitudinal *** applied both conventional and phylogenic analyses to explore whether Tb or behavioral thermoregulation could be regulated in response to different thermal *** species showed no significant differences in field Tb during gestation regardless of local thermal *** contrast,they exhibited significant differences in their behavioral thermoregulation associated with local environmental *** on these observations,the differences in thermoregulatory behavior identified are interpreted as compensatory adjustments to local thermal *** conclude that these species may deal with higher temperatures predicted for the tropics by modulating their thermoregulatory behavior.

Subsurface networks include mining tunnels,caves,and the urban *** of these environments presents a complex setting with significant challenges in exploration,exploitation,*** hazards exist,including environmental and structural,and conditions degrade and change *** present a survey of research in autonomy,networking and mobility focused on exploring and/or mapping subsurface networks in unpredictable and unexplored *** focus is on mining tunnels as a proxy subterranean environment;motivated by the proximity of the authors to the Bonita Peak Mining District;a Superfund site consisting of 48 historic mines which have contaminated soil,groundwater and surface water with heavy metals as a result of historic *** exploration and assessment of the mining tunnels for remediation efforts presents an extremely challenging problem in subterranean ***,the environment in question is the most extreme and challenging subterranean *** assets must enter to explore and re-map the tunnels to assess safety for subsequent entrance by robots and/or humans for proper *** survey is split into three categories--Locomotion,GPS-denied navigation and localization,and *** is concluded with a proposed design for a platform that addresses the difficulties of exploring an abandoned mine.

Resolving SSM/I-Ship Radar Rainfall Discrepancies from AIP-3

The third algorithm intercomparison project （AIP-3） involved rain estimates from more than 50 satellite rainfall algorithms and ground radar measurements within the Intensive Flux Array （IFA） over the equatorial western Pacific warm pool region during the Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Response Experiment （TOGA COARE）. Early results indicated that there was a sys- tematic bias between rainrates from satellite passive microwave and ground radar measurements. The mean rainrate from radar measurements is about 50% underestimated compared to that from passive microwave-based retrieval algorithms. This paper is designed to analyze rain patterns from the Florida State University rain retrieval algorithm and radar measurements to understand physically the rain discrep- ancies. Results show that there is a clear range-dependent bias associated with the radar measurements. However, this range-dependent systematical bias is almost eliminated with the corrected radar rainrates. Results suggest that the effects from radar attenuation correction, calibration and beam filling are the major sources of rain discrepancies. This study demonstrates that rain retrievals based on satellite mea- surements from passive microwave radiometers such as the Special Sensor of Microwave Imager （SSM/I） are reliable, while rain estimates from ground radar measurements are correctable.

The addition of surface acoustic wave(SAW)technologies to microfluidics has greatly advanced lab-on-a-chip applications due to their unique and powerful attributes,including high-precision manipulation,versatility,integrability,biocompatibility,contactless nature,and rapid ***,the development of SAW microfluidic devices is limited by complex and time-consuming micro/nanofabrication techniques and access to cleanroom facilities for multistep photolithography and vacuum-based *** simplify the fabrication of SAW microfluidic devices with customizable dimensions and functions,we utilized the additive manufacturing technique of aerosol jet *** successfully fabricated customized SAW microfluidic devices of varying materials,including silver nanowires,graphene,and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)polystyrene sulfonate(PEDOT:PSS).To characterize and compare the acoustic actuation performance of these aerosol jet printed SAW microfluidic devices with their cleanroom-fabricated counterparts,the wave displacements and resonant frequencies of the different fabricated devices were directly measured through scanning laser Doppler ***,to exhibit the capability of the aerosol jet printed devices for lab-on-a-chip applications,we successfully conducted acoustic streaming and particle concentration ***,we demonstrated a novel solution-based,direct-write,single-step,cleanroom-free additive manufacturing technique to rapidly develop SAW microfluidic devices that shows viability for applications in the fields of biology,chemistry,engineering,and medicine.

Experimental investigations of internal energy dissipation during fracture of fiber-reinforced ultra-high-performance concrete

Split-cylinder fracture of fiber-reinforced ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC)was examined using two complementary techniques:X-ray computed tomography (CT)and acoustic emission (AE).Fifty-mm-diameter specimens of two different fiber types were scanned both before and after load *** the CT images,fiber orientation was evaluated to establish optimum and pessimum specimen orientations,at which fibers would have maximum and minimum effect,*** expected,fiber orientation affected both the peak load and the toughness of the specimen,with the optimum toughness being between 20% and 30%higher than the *** AE energy was also affected *** CT scans of the specimens were used to measure internal damage. Damage was quantified in terms of internal energy dissipation due to both matrix cracking and fiber pullout by using calibration measurements for *** results showed that fiber pullout was the dominant energy dissipation mechanism;however,the sum of the internal energy dissipation measured amounted to only 60% of the total energy dissipated by the specimens as measured by the net work of *** is postulated that localized compaction of the UHPC matrix as well as internal friction between fractured fragments makes up the balance of internal energy dissipation.

Adaptive introductions:How multiple experiments and comparisons to wild populations provide insights into requirements for long-term introduction success of an endangered shrub

High-Throughput UAV Image-Based Method Is More Precise Than Manual Rating of Herbicide Tolerance

The traditional visual rating system is labor-intensive,time-consuming,and prone to human *** aerial vehicle(UAV)imagery-based vegetation indices(VI)have potential applications in high-throughput plant *** study objective is to determine if UAV imagery provides accurate and consistent estimations of crop injury from herbicide application and its potential as an alternative to visual *** study was conducted at the Kernen Crop Research Farm,University of Saskatchewan in 2016 and ***(Vicia faba L.)crop tolerance to nine herbicide tank mixtures was evaluated with 2 rates distributed in a randomized complete block design(RCBD)with 4 *** trial was imaged using a multispectral camera with a ground sample distance(GSD)of 1.2 cm,one week after the treatment *** ratings of growth reduction and physiological chlorosis were recorded simultaneously with *** optimized soil-adjusted vegetation index(OSAVI)was calculated from the thresholded *** UAV-based vegetation index(OSAVI)produced more precise results compared to visual ratings for both *** coefficient of variation(CV)of OSAVI was~1%when compared to 18-43%for the visual ***,Tukey’s honestly significance difference(HSD)test yielded a more precise mean separation for the UAV-based vegetation index than visual *** significant correlations between OSAVI and the visual ratings from the study suggest that undesirable variability associated with visual assessments can be minimized with the UAVbased ***-based imagery methods had greater precision than the visual-based ratings for crop herbicide *** methods have the potential to replace visual ratings and aid in screening crops for herbicide tolerance.
