An investigation was performed to determine the pressure transient levels and time required to reach pressure equilibrium in a regulated liquid propulsion system due to the priming of a propellant tank during system *** experimental fluid flow test setup was designed and fabricated using a pressure vessel to house distilled water as a propellant simulant for liquid hydrazine and high-pressure gaseous nitrogen as the pressurant.A snubber orifice was installed downstream of the high-pressure gaseous nitrogen bottles to protect a regulator from high-pressure transients,prior to the regulation of incoming gas to beginning of life propulsion system propellant tank *** were conducted to measure pressure transients and time to pressure equilibrium by varying initial system pressures,snubber orifice diameter,and system ullage volume.A mathematical model was developed and compared against the experimental regulated system priming results to predict the system pressures and time to reach system pressure equilibrium during the pressurization period for regulated propulsion systems given initial conditions.

Nociception is an important physiological process that detects harmful signals and results in pain perception. In this review, we discuss important experimental evidence involving some TRP ion channels as molecular sensors of chemical, thermal, and mechanical noxious stimuli to evoke the pain and itch sensations. Among them are the TRPA1 channel, members of the vanilloid subfamily （TRPV1, TRPV3, and TRPV4）, and finally members of the melastatin group （TRPM2, TRPM3, and TRPMS）. Given that pain and itch are pro-survival, evolutionarily-honed protective mechanisms, care has to be exercised when developing inhibitory/modulatory com- pounds targeting specific pain/itch-TRPs so that physio- logical protective mechanisms are not disabled to a degree that stimulus-mediated injury can occur. Such events have impeded the development of safe and effective TRPV1- modulating compounds and have diverted substantial resources. A beneficial outcome can be readily accom- plished via simple dosing strategies, and also by incorpo- rating medicinal chemistry design features during compound design and synthesis. Beyond clinical use, where compounds that target more than one channel might have a place and possibly have advantageous features, highly specific and high-potency compounds will be helpful in mechanistic discovery at the structure-function level.

Aim: To evaluate the effects of 1,3-dinitrobenznene (mdNB) on sperm motility of hamster and to correlate the re-sults with the fertility. Methods: Adult male hamsters were gavaged with one of the 3 dose regimes of mdNB(1.5 mg daily for 4 weeks ,1.5 mg one day a week for 4 weeks and 1.0 mg 3 days a week for 4 weeks). Computerassisted semen analysis (CASA) was used to analyse the sperm motility parameters, curvilinear velocity (VCL) andstraight line velocity (VSL) of sperm in distal corpus epididymides and distal cauda epididymides. In vitro fertilisationwas carried out only for 1.5 mg mdNB daily group to determine the sperm fertilising capacity. Results: There wasa significant reduction in sperm velocity parameters at weeks 3 and 4 after treatment, which was correlated with a de-cline in sperm fertility. Conclusion; Sperm velocity parameters may be used to determine the effect of a toxic insulton the sperm function.

Aim: To evaluate the effects of acute and chronic doses of methoxy acetic acid (MAA) on in vitro fertilisation byhamster sperm and to correlate the data with the testicular damage. Methods: Adult male hamsters were gavagedwith 3 single doses (0, 80, 160 and 650 mg/kg) and 3 chronic doses (0, 8, 32 and 64 mg/kg daily for 5 weeks) ofMAA in distilled water. After treatment hamsters were killed at weekly intervals and spermatozoa recovered from thedistal cauda epididymides were used to assess the fertilising capacity in vitro. The testes were processed for histologicalexamination. Results; Acute doses showed a significant reduction in sperm fertilising ability from week 3 and 4 af-ter treatment and with the chronic doses, the effects were more extensive and persistent. The results were in correpon-dence with the testicular damages observed. Conclusion: It is evident that both acute and chronic doses of MAAcan impair the sperm function by damaging one or more cell populations in the testis.(Asian J Androl 2001 Sep; 3: 209- 216)

Background:To investigate the impact of the orientation of preoperative corneal astigmatism on achieving the postoperative target refraction following monofocal intraocular lens(IOL)***:This study enrolled 339 eyes who had uneventful cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange(RLE)with subsequent monofocal IOL *** were initially categorized dependent upon axial length and then on the orientation of preoperative anterior corneal *** 1 had against-the-rule(ATR)anterior corneal astigmatism,group 2 had with-the-rule(WTR)anterior corneal astigmatism,and group 3 had oblique(OB)anterior corneal *** preoperative corneal astigmatism was determined by the IOLMaster(Carl Zeiss Meditec AG).Postoperative refraction was completed for all eyes,and the results were calculated and compared for the separate ***:In eyes with axial lengths greater than 22.0 mm and less than 25.0 mm there was a significant difference between the magnitude of preoperative corneal astigmatism between groups 2 and 3 with 0.827±0.376 d in group 2,and 0.677±0.387 d in group *** mean postoperative spherical equivalent(SE)prediction error was−0.132±0.475 d in group 1,0.026±0.497 d in group 2,and−0.130±0.477 d in group *** was a significant difference between groups 1 and *** was no significant difference in the magnitude of preoperative corneal astigmatism and postoperative SE prediction error between the anterior corneal astigmatism orientation groups in eyes with axial lengths of less than or equal to 22.0 mm and greater than or equal to 25.0 ***:The orientation of preoperative anterior corneal astigmatism significantly affected the postoperative biometry prediction error in eyes with astigmatism of 1.75 d or less in eyes with the axial length between 22.0 mm and 25.0 ***,the results were not clinically significant.

Human norovirus is the leading cause of foodborne illness *** and quantification of norovirus commonly involves the use of reverse transcriptase quantitative polymerase chain reaction(RT-qPCR);however,the presence of inhibitory compounds in foods limit detection and accurate *** some studies have been done on PCR inhibitors from foods,many of them are over a decade old and do not investigate inhibition in contemporary one-step RT-qPCR-based detection *** purpose of this work was to quantify the degree of inhibition that occurs from inhibitory compounds found in produce(pectin)and mollusks(hemocyanin,glycogen)—foods commonly associated with norovirus ***-qPCR reactions containing different amounts of genomic bacteriophage MS2 RNA,a norovirus surrogate,were spiked with different concentrations of pectin(0.0625%–0.25%w/V),glycogen(1.25%–10%),and hemocyanin(0.0625%–0.25%).Past research has implicated glycogen as an inhibitory compound in oysters;however,even high levels of glycogen(10%)had no significant effect(P>0.05)on ***,both pectin and hemocyanin caused complete inhibition at 0.25%,with no significant inhibition observed at 0.0625%(Pdant in the hemolymph of mollusks and previously untested as a PCR *** work demonstrates that pectin and hemocyanin should be considered when testing produce and mollusk samples with PCR-based methods.

Navigating the currents of seascape genomics： how spatial analyses can augment population genomic studies

Population genomic approaches are making rapid inroads in the study of non-model organisms, including marine taxa. To date, these marine studies have predominantly focused on rudimentary metrics describing the spatial and environmental context of their study region （e.g., geographical distance, average sea surface temperature, average salinity）. We contend that a more nuanced and considered approach to quantifying seascape dynamics and patterns can strengthen population genomic investigations and help identify spatial, temporal, and environmental factors associated with differing selective regimes or demographic histories. Nevertheless, approaches for quantifying marine landscapes are complicated. Characteristic features of the marine environment, including pelagic living in flowing water （experienced by most marine taxa at some point in their life cycle）, require a well-designed spatial-temporal sampling strategy and analysis. Many genetic summary statistics used to describe populations may be inappropriate for marine species with large population sizes, large species ranges, stochastic recruitment, and asymmetrical gene flow. Finally, statistical approaches for testing associations between seascapes and population genomic patterns are still maturing with no single approach able to capture all relevant considerations. None of these issues are completely unique to marine systems and therefore similar issues and solutions will be shared for many organisms regardless of habitat. Here, we outline goals and spatial approaches for land- scape genomics with an emphasis on marine systems and review the growing empirical literature on seascape genomics. We review established tools and approaches and highlight promising new strategies to overcome select issues including a strategy to spatially optimize sampling. despite the many challenges, we argue that marine systems may be especially well suited for identifying candidate genomic regions under environmentally mediated sele
