Jamun(Syzygium cumini Skeels)is a nutritious fruit and has historically been used as both as an edible and a traditional *** jamun seed is an inedible by-product of the ***,their high concentration of phytochemicals makes them valuable components of *** studies on diverse biological activities of jamun seeds have warranted their application in human health and biomedical *** review paper discusses critically the phytochemical composition of jamun seeds and the bioactivities,including their antioxidant,anti-inflammatory,anti-cancer,antidiabetic,anti-microbial,anti-obesity,hepato-protective,cardio and gastro-protective *** bioactivity of jamun seed is related to the presence of phenols,flavonoids,steroids,alkaloids,triterpenoids,tannins,and *** research in vivo,and in vitro experiments with human and animal cell models support the idea that jamun seed extract can be valuable additions in food and biomedical fields due to the diverse bio-functional ***,in-depth and systematic in vivo clinical trials using human subjects must be conducted to confirm the safe consumption limit and establish other therapeutic roles of jamun seeds for their abundant utilization as a nutraceutical or pharmacological ***,research is required to understand the exact mechanisms of the bioactivities exhibited by jamun seeds.

An investigation was undertaken to analyse the influence of microbial inoculants on growth and enzyme activities elicited, and soil microbiome of two varieties of Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat, which were grown under protected mode of cultivation. Rhizosphere soil sampling at 45 and 90 DAT(days after transplanting of cuttings) revealed up to four- to five-fold enhancement in the activity of defence-, and pathogenesisrelated, and antioxidant enzymes, relative to the uninoculated control. Plant growth and soil microbial parameters, especially soil microbial biomass carbon and potential nitrification exhibited significant increases over control. Available soil nitrogen concentrations showed 40%–44% increment in inoculated treatments. Scanning electron microscopy of the root tissues revealed biofilm-like aggregates and individual short bits of cyanobacterial filaments. Analyses of DGGE profiles of archaeal and bacterial communities did not show temporal variations(between 45 and 90 DAT). However,distinct influences on the number and abundance of phylotypes due to microbial inoculants were recorded. The inoculants — Cyanobacterial consortium(BF1- 4) and Anabaena sp.–Trichoderma sp. biofilm(An-Tr) were particularly promising in terms of the plant and soil related parameters,and remained distinct in the DGGE profiles generated. The effect of Trichoderma viride–Azotobacter biofilm on soil bacterial and archaeal communities was unique and distinct as a separate cluster. This study highlights that microbial inoculants exert positive effects, which are specific even to the rhizosphere soil microbiome of chrysanthemum varieties tested. Such inoculants can serve as soil fertility enhancing options in protected floriculture.

We read with great interest the article, ＂Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease may not be a severe disease at presentation among Asian Indians＂ by Madan et at in the recent issue of WJG. Twenty-eight （55%） out of 51 patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease （NAFLD） who presented with abnormal transaminases had histological evidence of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis （NASH）. The majority of patients had grade 1 [32 （63%）] or grade 2 [16 （31%）] inflammation and either had no [23 （45%）] fibrosis or stage I [19 （37%）] fibrosis. None of the patients had cirrhosisf11. We agree with Madan et al that Asian Indians with NAFLD who present with unexplained increase in transaminases may have mild disease at presentation on the basis of similar observations made by us. NAFLD has a spectrum which includes patients with only steatosis and NASH that can progress to cirrhotic and hepatocellular carcinoma.

Adventitious bud induction and plantlet regeneration were studied in a popular mulberry variety, V1 using leaf as an explant. Fully expanded leaf explants were cultured on Murashige and Skoog’s (MS) medium supplemented with thidiazuron (TDZ) (0.5-4.0 mg/l), 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) (0.5-2.0 mg/l), indole acetic acid (IAA) (2.0 mg/l), gibberlic acid (GA3) (1.0-2.0 mg/l) silver nitrate (AgNO3) (2.0 mg/l) and different carbon sources such as sucrose, fructose and glucose (10%-30%) either individually or in combination to induce adventitious buds and regeneration. The highest percentage (63%) of adventitious bud formation and regeneration (68%) was achieved in the medium containing MS with TDZ (1.0 mg/l), IAA (2.0 mg/l) and AgNO3 (2.0 mg/l). For subsequent regeneration and shoot elongation the MS medium having BAP (1.0 mg/l), GA3 (2.0 mg/l) and AgNO3 (2.0 mg/l) was found to be suitable. Amongst the carbon sources tested, the most suitable carbon source was found to be sucrose (3%) followed by fructose (2%) for adventitious bud formation. Excised in vitro shoots were rooted (60%-80%) in half strength MS medium supplemented with indole-3-butyric acid (1.0 mg/l). The well rooted plantlets were hardened in soil + sand + farm yard manure (FYM) mixture with a success rate of 70%-90%. Since in vitro regeneration is highly genotype-dependent in mulberry, the standardized protocol can be effectively used for further improvement of this leading genotype using biotechnological approaches.

Distribution of Gastropods in the Intertidal Environment of South, Middle and North Andaman Islands, India

Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the gastropod diversity is high, due to the majority of shores are rocky. The wet rocky shore promotes algal growth, which is ultimate for feeding ground for gastropod growth and development leading to more diversity. The global warming, anthropogenic activities, industrial and domestic pollution, etc., have accelerated the loss of coastal and marine biodiversity components over the last few decades which has been of great concern. However, except global warming, the other factors were of least concern with reference to Andaman and Nicobar Islands biodiversity due to a pristine environment. Therefore, exploration of biodiversity in these islands is essential to create a baseline data for record and future research. Four locations of south to north Andaman Islands which represented Carbyns Cove from south Andaman, Rangat and Mayabunder from the Middle Andaman and Diglipur from the North Andaman were selected for this study. Gastropoda species were collected for a period of one year in three prevailing seasons of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. They are South West Monsoon (SW monsoon), North East Monsoon (NE Monsoon) and Non Rainy Seasons (NR Seasons). The present study of gastropods distribution in the South, Middle and North Andaman groups of Islands suggested that there are 71 species belonging to 52 genus and 33 families. At any one of the time and any one of the locations, only one occurrence was noticed for 38 species and remaining 33 species were overlapping with respect to stations and seasons. Evaluation of the cluster suggested that Cluster A (NR season in Carbyns Cove) and Cluster B (NE and SW Monsoon in Mayabunder) as a separate entity among the 12 combinations of stations and seasons due to their species representation. It was also concluded that out of 71 studied species, 3 species were not reported till date in these Island environment and 2 species from any other parts of India.
