On the material dependence of experimental shear fracture orientation

It is not uncommon to observe shear fractures in ductile rocks oriented at more than 45° with respect to the maximum compression direction. Since these orientations cannot be explained with the classic Mohr-Coulumb or Tresca yield criteria, Zheng et al.(Journal of Structural Geology, 35: 1394–1405, 2011) proposed the maximum effective moment(MEM) failure criterion. This rule suggests that shear fractures in ductile rocks form at ?55° with the maximum compression axis and that this orientation is material-independent and, therefore, universal. Zheng et al.(Science China: Earth Sciences, 57(11): 2819–2824, 2014) used data from our own experiments as supporting evidence of their failure criterion. In this contribution we discuss why shear fracture formation in ductile rocks indeed strongly depends on the mechanical properties of the deforming medium, and why experimental data should not be taken to prove the validity of the MEM criterion. The formation mechanisms and orientations of shear fractures in our experiments significantly vary depending on the material strength and degree and type of anisotropy(composite and intrinsic). We therefore demonstrate using experimental data that a universal failure angle in ductile and anisotropic rocks does not apply. Additionally, we highlight some inconsistencies of the MEM criterion.

This paper reports an on-going application of the Analytic Network Process （ANP） in the context of a non-profit organization： The latin American Studies Association （lASA）. This institution organizes a large international conference every eighteen months and needs to estimate conference attendance in advance （for logistic purposes） as well as selecting a host city where the combination of hotel infrastructure, conference costs, and so on, makes it a sound financial choice. In this paper, ANP will be used to： first, create a model to predict the relative number of attendees to the forthcoming 2009 lASA conference; and second, to create a Benefit-Cost-Risk （BCR） model to select the most suitable latin American city as the conference site, This paper shows how the combination of these two ANP models, one for prediction and one for selection, can be used together for effective decision-making.

Dear Editor,I am *** Montolío-Marzo from FISABIO Oftalmología Médica,Valencia,Spain.I write you to present a case report of epithelial downgrowth in an aphakic *** epithelial downgrowth is one of the most feared complications in cases of penetrating ocular trauma or recurrent ocular *** progress can affect all the ocular structures,giving rise to corneal decompensation,retinal detachment,difficult-to-treat glaucoma or phthisis bulbi and many cases end in enucleation[1].Fortunately,the incidence of this condition is very low,there being between 0.08%and 0.12%after cataract surgery and 0.25%after penetrating *** infrequency means that scientific evidence is reduced to case series and the opinions of experts without there being a homogeneous criterion to guide the work of the doctor in *** these reasons,epithelial downgrowth is still a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge.

Natural killer(NK)cell-mediated antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity(ADCC)through CD16 plays a critical role in antihuman immunodeficiency virus(HIV)responses.1–3 CD300a is a surface receptor highly expressed on NK cells that has the capacity to inhibit NK cell-mediated cytotoxicity in healthy donors.4 The CD300a molecule has been related to several viral infections and is able to diminish the NK cell killing of pseudorabies-infected cells through interactions with its ligands phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylethanolamine.5 In addition,CD300a expression on B and CD4+T lymphocytes is altered during HIV-1 infection,and combined antiretroviral therapy(cART)does not restore nonpathological expression levels.5,6 However,the expression and function of CD300a on NK cells during HIV-1 infection is still *** have determined the surface expression of CD300a on different NK cell subsets and the capacity of this receptor to inhibit CD16-induced NK cell effector functions in healthy and HIV-1 infected individuals.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC) remains a deadly disease with no efficacious treatment options. PDAC incidence is projected to increase, which may be caused at least partially by the obesity epidemic. Significantly enhanced efforts to prevent or intercept this cancer are clearly warranted. Oncogenic KRAS mutations are recognized initiating events in PDAC development, however, they are not entirely sufficient for the development of fully invasive *** genetic alterations and/or environmental, nutritional, and metabolic signals, as present in obesity, type-2 diabetes mellitus, and inflammation, are required for full PDAC formation. We hypothesize that oncogenic KRAS increases the intensity and duration of the growth-promoting signaling *** exciting studies from different laboratories indicate that the activity of the transcriptional co-activators Yes-associated protein(YAP) and WW-domaincontaining transcriptional co-activator with PDZ-binding motif(TAZ) play a critical role in the promotion and maintenance of PDAC operating as key downstream target of KRAS signaling. While initially thought to be primarily an effector of the tumor-suppressive Hippo pathway, more recent studies revealed that YAP/TAZ subcellular localization and co-transcriptional activity is regulated by multiple upstream signals. Overall, YAP has emerged as a central node of transcriptional convergence in growth-promoting signaling in PDAC cells. Indeed, YAP expression is an independent unfavorable prognostic marker for overall survival of PDAC. In what follows, we will review studies implicating YAP/TAZ in pancreatic cancer development and consider different approaches to target these transcriptional regulators.

To the Editor:We sincerely applaud the work done by Gupta et al.,in which they analyzed a single-center experience regarding gallbladder per-foration(GBP)management[1].Currently,there is a lack of cohort studies to adequately describe the approach strategies and man-agement for this pathology,with international guidelines making ambiguous recommendations[2,3].Their study stratified GBP types and provided details regarding clinical presentation,comorbidities,preoperative diagnosis,etiology,imaging techniques,and surgical *** study reported a high conversion rate when a la-paroscopic approach was attempted for cholecystectomy.

We studied the role that electron gas has on the formation of nuclear structures at subsaturation densities and low temperatures(Tlassical molecular dynamics model we studied isospin symmetric and asymmetric matter at subsaturation densities and low temperatures varying the Coulomb interaction *** effect of such variation was quantified on the fragment size multiplicity,the inter-particle distance,the isospin content of the clusters,the nucleon mobility and cluster persistence,and on the nuclear structure *** found that the presence of an electron gas distributes matter more evenly,disrupts the formation of larger objects,reduces the isospin content,and modifies the nucleon average displacement,but does not affect the inter-nucleon distance in *** nuclear structures are also found to change shapes by different degrees depending on their isospin content,temperature and density.
