Tolerability and hydrating effects of an anti-aging gynaecological collagen cream in women in menopause

Background and Aims: A gynaecological cream containing collagen, phytocollagen, hyaluronate and vitamins was investigated in women in menopause. Methods: The cream was daily applied to the vaginal mucosa and the perineal skin as well as to the abdominal skin (healthy skin used as control) for 1 week and then on alternate days for other 2 weeks. Skin hydration and viscoelasticity were measured at baseline and after 8 and 21 days by Corneometer? CM 825 and Cutometer? MPA 850, respectively. The product use comfort and the moisturising of the vaginal mucosa were evaluated by the volunteers through a questionnaire and a visual analogue scale, respectively. Results: The local tolerability was excellent for nearly all of the volunteers (90% - 95%) and according both to dermatologist’s and gynaecologist’s evaluation. Related adverse reactions had a frequency of 15% (10% vulvovaginal burning sensation and 5% vulvovaginal discomfort). The topical hydration increased both in the perineal and the abdominal skin. Hydration increase vs. baseline was more marked on day 8 than on day 21 and was significant in the abdominal skin (p-value < 0.0001). The vaginal moisturising improved significantly (p-value < 0.0001) both on day 8 and 21 vs. baseline. Small changes in the viscoelasticity parameters were observed in both the perineal and the abdominal skin. Few significant improvements were R1 and R8 decreases in the perineum and R0 increase in the abdomen. Conclusions: The tested cream represents a safe product with proven moisturising effect towards the vaginal mucosa when daily applied by menopausal women.

Brain plasticity-A universal tool with many variations:The study of brain plasticity has been gaining interest since almost a century and has now reached a huge amount of information(>80,000 results in PubMed).Overall,different types of plasticity,including stem cell-driven genesis of new neurons(adult neurogenesis),cells in arrested maturation(dormant neurons),neuro-glial and synaptic plasticity,can coexist and contribute to grant plastic changes in the brain,from a cellular to system level(Benedetti and Couillard-Despres,2022;Bonfanti et al.,2023).

Unified Analysis for Calculating the Incoherent Spontaneous Emission of Cooperative Radiations

A unified analysis is presented to calculate the incoherent spontaneous power of cooperative radiations based on self-amplified spontaneous emission. Using quantum mechanical tools, we derive analytical expressions for the incoherent spontaneous power of undulator and Cherenkov free-electron lasers （FELs）. The undulator and Cherenkov FELs are considered as two different examples for the radiation that accumulate cooperatively. In the case of the undulator FEL, we show an excellent agreement between an expression for the incoherent radiation power derived in the present work and that obtained using a completely different approach [Phys. Ftev. E 65 （2002） 026501]. For the Cherenkov radiation, we demonstrate a satisfactory agreement between the incoherent power predicted in our analysis and previous experimental results.

Hyperkalemia in Patients on Peritoneal Dialysis: Clinical Use Experience with New Potassium-Binders

Background: Patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) on maintenance dialysis have a high risk of developing hyperkalemia. In addition to traditional approaches, a new option for the management of patients on dialysis includes the use of a potassium binder, sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (SZC). We evaluated the effect and safety of SZC in patients with chronic PD. Objective: To present a case series that illustrates the real-world use of new potassium-binders in hyperkalemic patients on peritoneal dialysis. Methods: This case series collected 9 patients on PD with baseline potassium values > 5.5 mmol/l and who were treated with SZC 5 g once a day. Data were collected at baseline and at 1, 2, and 3 months after initiation of treatment. Results: The median age of patients was 64.5 years and the median duration of observation was 90 ± 5 days. It was observed that median serum potassium decreased (5.8 mmol/l at baseline with a range of 5.8 mmol/L - 6.8 mmol/L versus 4.5 in the third month with a range of 3.6 mmol/L - 5.3 mmol/L) after SZC treatment. Adverse events were observed in 2 (22.2%). The unique adverse event was constipation and presented in 2 patients (22.2%). Constipation was mild and transient during the observation period. No adverse events of special interest were reported. Conclusion: Normokalemia was established and maintained in this series of patients treated with SZC. No episodes of hyper- or hypo-kalemia were observed. SCZ had a good safety profile and was well tolerated over 3 months.

Micro computed tomography based finite element models for elastic and strength properties of 3D printed glass scaffolds

In this study,the mechanical properties of glass scaffolds manufactured by robocasting are investigated through micro computed tomography(/x-CT)based finite element *** scaffolds are obtained by printing fibers along two perpendicular directions on parallel layers with a 90°tilting between two adjacent layers.A parametric study is first presented with the purpose to assess the effect of the major design parameters on the elastic and strength properties of the scaffold;the mechanical properties of the 3D printed scaffolds are eventually estimated by using the\i-CT data with the aim of assessing the effect of defects on the final geometry which are intrinsic in the manufacturing *** macroscopic elastic modulus and strength of the scaffold are determined by simulating a uniaxial compressive test along the direction which is perpendicular to the layers of the printed *** iterative approach has been used in order to determine the scaffold strength.A partial validation of the computational model has been obtained through comparison of the computed results with experimental values presented in[10]on a ceramic scaffold having the same *** the results have been presented as non-dimensional *** finite element analyses have shown which of the selected design parameters have the major effect on the stiffness and strength,being the porosity and fiber shifting between adjacent layers the most important *** analyses carried out on the basis of the/x-C7 data have shown elastic modulus and strength which are consistent with that found on ideal geometry at similar macroscopic porosity.

The Wnt/β-catenin signaling is a conserved pathway that has a crucial role in embryonic and adult *** of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway has been associated with diseases including cancer,and components of the sisnaling have been proposed as innovative therapeutic targets,mainly for cancer *** attention of the worldwide researchers paid to this issue is increasing,also in view of the therapeutic potential of these agents in diseases,such as Parkinson’s disease(PD),for which no cure is existing *** evidence indicates that abnormal Wnt/β-catenin signaling is involved in tumor immunology and the targeting of Wnt/β-catenin pathway has been also proposed as an attractive strategy to potentiate cancer *** the last decade,several products,including naturally occurring dietary agents as well as a wide variety of products from plant sources,including curcumin,quercetin,berberin,and ginsenosides,have been identified as potent modulators of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling and have gained interest as promising candidates for the development of chemopreventive or therapeutic drugs for *** this review we make an overview of the nature-derived compounds reported to have antitumor activity by modulating the Wnt/β-catenin signaling,also focusing on extraction methods,chemical features,and bio-activity assays used for the screening of these compounds.
