Constructed wetlands(CwW)are well known nature-based systems for water *** study evaluated the efficiency and effectiveness of seven domestic wastewater treatment systems based on horizontal flow CWs in Jarabacoa,the Dominican *** results showed that the CWs were efficient in reducing the degree of contamination of wastewater to levels below the Dominican wastewater discharge standards for parameters such as the 5-day biochemical oxygen demand(BOD5)and chemical oxygen demand,but not for the removal of phosphorus and fecal *** addition,a horizontal flow subsurface wetland in the peri-urban area El Dorado was evaluated in terms of the performance of wastewater treatment in tropical climatic *** concentrations of heavy metals,such as zinc,copper,chromium,and iron,were found to decrease in the effluent of the wetland,and the concentrations for nickel and manganese tended to *** levels of heavy metals in the effluent were lower than the limit values of the Dominican wastewater discharge *** construction cost of these facilities was around 200 USD per population equivalent,similar to the cost in other countries in the same *** study suggested some solutions to the improved performance of CWs:selection of a microbial flora that guarantees the reduction of nitrates and nitrites to molecular nitrogen,use of endemic plants that bioaccumulate heavy metals,combination of constructed wetlands with filtration on activated carbon,and inclusion of water purification processes that allow to evaluate the reuse of treated water.

A Compact Flexible Circularly Polarized Implantable Antenna for Biotelemetry Applications

With the help of in-body antennas,the wireless communication among the implantable medical devices(IMDs)and exterior monitoring equipment,the telemetry system has brought us many ***,a very thin-profile circularly polarized(CP)in-body antenna,functioning in ISM band at 2.45 GHz,is proposed.A tapered coplanar waveguide(CPW)method is used to excite the *** radiator contains a pentagonal shape with five horizontal slits inside to obtain a circular polarization behavior.A bendable Roger Duroid RT5880 material(εr=2.2,tanδ=0.0009)with a typical 0.25 mm-thickness is used as a *** proposed antenna has a total volume of 21×13×0.25 *** antenna covers up a bandwidth of 2.38 to 2.53 GHz(150 MHz)in vacuum,while in skin tissue it covers 1.56 to 2.72 GHz(1.16 GHz)and in the muscle tissue covers 2.16 to 3.17 GHz(1.01 GHz).GHz).The flexion analysis in the x and y axes was also performed in simulation as the proposed antenna works with a wider bandwidth in the skin and muscle *** simulation and the curved antenna measurements turned out to be in good *** impedance bandwidth of−10 dB and the axis ratio bandwidth of 3 dB(AR)are measured on the skin and imitative gel of the pig at 27.78%and 35.5%,13.5%and 4.9%,respectively,at a frequency of 2.45 *** simulations revealed that the specific absorption rate(SAR)in the skin is 0.634 and 0.914 W/kg in muscle on *** recommended SAR values are below the limits set by the federal communications commission(FCC).Finally,the proposed low-profile implantable antenna has achieved very compact size,flexibility,lower SAR values,high gain,higher impedance and axis ratio bandwidths in the skin and muscle tissues of the human *** antenna is smaller in size and a good applicant for application in medical implants.

Objective： Vascular calcification is the consequence of the complex interaction between genetic, environmental, and vascular factors, which ultimately lead to the deposition of calcium in the tunica intima （atherosclerotic calcification） or tunica media （M6nckenberg＇s sclerosis）. Vascular calcification is also closely related to other pathologies, such as diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and chronic kidney disease. It has been concluded that the degree of vascular calcification may vary from person to person, even if the associated pathologies and environmental factors are the same. Therefore, this suggests an important genetic contribution to the development of vascular calcification. This review aimed to find the most recent evidence about vascular calcification pathophysiology regarding the genetic aspects and molecular pathways. Data Sources： We conducted an exhaustive search in Scopus, EBSCO, and PubMed with the keywords ＂genetics and vascular calcification＂, ＂molecular pathways, genetic and vascular calcification＂ and included the main articles from January 1995 up to August 2016. We focused on the most recent evidence about vascular calcification pathophysiology regarding the genetic aspects and molecular pathways. Study Selection： The most valuable published original and review articles related to our objective were selected. Results： Vascular calcification is a multifactorial disease; thus, its pathophysiology cannot be explained by a single specific factor, rather than by the result of the association of several genetic variants, molecular pathway interactions, and environmental factors that promote its development. Conclusion： Although several molecular aspects of this mechanism have been elucidated, there is still a need for a better understanding of the factors that predispose to this disease.

Coastal zones are very dynamic and fragile environments, constituting a landscape ever more heterogeneous, fragmented and with increasing levels of complexity due to the changing relationship between man and nature. Integrated coastal zone management therefore requires detailed knowledge of the system and its components, based—to a large extent—on technical and scientific information. However, the information generated must be in line with the political requirements necessary for decision-making and planning. Thus the use of indicators to give a simplified view of the many components of the territory, and at the same time to provide important information about patterns or trends, becomes a tool of the utmost importance. These indicators can be understood as measurable characteristics of the environment, which facilitate comprehension of the processes occurring at different scales and serve as a reference to inform the population and support decision-making. The aim of the present note is to demonstrate briefly the need to develop geographical-environmental and natural risk indicators to facilitate comprehension of the dynamic of spatial and temporal landscape patterns, particularly in coastal environments. This approach offers an historical summary of the natural, socio-economic and political processes which currently make up the territory, and which without doubt will continue to influence it in the future. At the same time, it is proposed that information should be integrated on the basis of this framework with a view to generating spatial decision support systems in a context of planning and integrated management of the coastal zones of Chile.

Methane from enteric fermentation is the gas with the greatest environmental impact emitted by ***(Lv)addition to feedstocks could be a strategy to mitigate rumen methane emissions via decreasing the population of methanogenic archaea(MA).Thus,this paper provides the first overview of the effects of Lv supplementation,focusing on the inhibition of methane production,rumen microbiota,and ruminal *** indicated that Lv treatment had a strong anti-methanogenic effect on pure strains of ***,there are uncertainties from in vitro rumen fermentation trials with complex substrates and rumen ***-state fermentation(SSF)has emerged as a cost-effective option to produce *** this way,SSF of agricultural residues as an Lv-carrier supplement in sheep and goats demonstrated a consistent decrease in ruminal methane *** experimental evidence for in vitro conditions showed that Lv did not affect the volatile fatty acids(VFA).However,in vivo experiments demonstrated that the production of VFA was *** did not negatively affect the digestibility of dry matter during in vitro and in vivo methods,and there is even evidence that it can induce an increase in *** the rumen microbiota,populations of MA were reduced,and no differences were detected in alpha and beta diversity associated with Lv ***,some changes in the relative abundance of the microbiota were *** studies are recommended on:(i)Lv biodegradation products and stability,as well as its adsorption onto the solid matter in the rumen,to gain more insight on the“available”or effective Lv concentration;and(ii)to determine whether the effect of Lv on ruminal fermentation also depends on the feed composition and different ruminants.

Potentiality of Vermicompost Humic Acids in Banana in Vitro Micropropagation Clone： Enano Guantanamero

The research was done at Havana Biofabric, Mayabeque Province. The vitro plants of banana （Musa sp） used came from the clone Enano Guantanamero （viand type）. They come from multiplication phase in a Murashige and MS （Skoog medium）. The objective of this work was to study the potentialities of HA （humic acids） for stimulation of rooting and cell division process, searching for completely synthetic hormone substitution due to its high cost. The multiplication medium contained thiamine （2 mg·L^-1）, myo-inositol （100 mg·L^-1）, sugar （30mg·L^-1）. By the use of HA, five treatments were used with total substitution of auxin and cytokinin （TI： HA （10 ***）; （T2： HA （20 mg·L^-1）; （T3： HA （30mg·L^-1）; （T4： HA （40 mg·L^-1）; （T5： HA （50 mg·L^-1） and the control with 6BAP （benzil amino purine）（4 mg·L^-1）＋ IBA （indol butyric acid）（0.65 mg·L^-1）, pH of the medium was adjust just before agar were add. The results showed that in the explants under HA treatments, elongation and cell multiplication were favored confirmed by explants great high, root number and length due to dry mass. The total protein content, reduced carbohydrate and peroxidases enzymatic activity were determine. The use of Vermicompost HA in the in vitro micropropagation of banana allow the elimination of rooting phase saving materials and be able to pass explants directly to Acclimatization phase.

Effects on physiologic measures of appetite from intragastric balloon and endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty: results of a prospective study

Background: Endoscopic bariatric therapies can help address widening management gaps in obesity. Their ability to facilitate weight loss is largely tied to influences on appetite through perturbations of gastric emptying and accommodation. As these tools gain traction in obesity therapy, their physiologic underpinnings require exploration, which may enhance efficacy, tolerance, and patient-tailored ***: We prospectively assessed consecutive subjects with fluid-filled intragastric balloons (IGBs) (n = 18) placed between October 2016 and June 2017 or underwent endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) (n = 23) from March 2018 to June 2018. Patients underwent physiologic appraisal at 3 months with13C-spirulina-based gastric emptying breath test to determine time to half emptying (T50), as well as maximum tolerated volume (MTV) of a standard nutrient drink test. Changes in T50 and MTV at 3 months were compared with percent total body weight loss (%TBWL) at 3 and 6 months using best-fit linear ***: The change in T50 at 3 months correlated with %TBWL at 3 months for IGB (P = 0.01) and ESG (P = 0.01) but with greater impact on %TBWL in IGB compared to ESG (R2 = 0.42vs. 0.26). Change in T50 at 3 months was predictive of weight loss at 6 months for IGB (P = 0.01) but not ESG (P = 0.11). ESG was associated with greater decrease in MTV compared to IGB (340.25 ± 297.97 mLvs. 183.00 ± 217.13 mL,P = 0.08), indicting an enhanced effect on satiation through decreased gastric accommodation. Changes in MTV at 3 months did not correlate with %TBWL for either IGB (P = 0.26) or ESG (P = 0.49) but trended toward significance for predicting %TBWL at 6 months for ESG (P = 0.06) but not IGB (P = 0.19).Conclusion: IGB and ESG both induce weight loss but likely through distinct gastric motor function phenotypes, and gastric emptying may predict future weight loss in patients with IGB.

Dissolution Behavior of Gold in Alkaline Media Using Thiourea

In this work the dissolutive behavior of gold in alkaline medium using thiourea (TU), under different variables, was studied in a theoretical and experimental way, in order to determine the conditions under which it is feasible to dissolve gold in thiourea-alkaline medium. A thermodynamic study was conducted by chemical speciation using the method of Ro-jas-Hernández, together with an electrochemical study where the electric potential was swept in the anodic direction. The main results of the thermodynamic study were that formamidine disulfide (FDS) and sulfinic compounds (S.C.) prevail at alkaline pH;by increasing the initial concen-tration of thiourea at alkaline pH, the presence of the gold complex is al-most zero for any initial concentration of thiourea. By including sodium sulfite in the gold-thiourea system, it was possible to obtain the Au(I)-TU complex at alkaline pH, with a presence of 95.13%. Electrochemical tests allowed verifying that in the absence of sodium sulfite the dissolution of gold in an alkaline medium is very slow but adding sodium sulfite im-provements become evident in the dissolution of the metal. Therefore, sodium sulfite catalyzes the gold dissolution process and stabilizes the thiourea. With this study it was possible to establish the feasibility of using thiourea in an alkaline medium for the dissolution of gold, and the conditions under which it is possible to dissolve the gold in that medium. With these fundamentals and conditions, it is now possible to move forward to test this system for minerals and/or concentrates containing gold.

Posterior quadrant epilepsy surgery: case series of a South American hospital

Background Posterior quadrant epilepsy(PCE)is a type of focal epilepsy that originates in the parietal lobe,occipital lobe,and the parietal-occipital border of the temporal lobe,or in any combination of these *** has a low incidence,but it can cause a great burden in disability-adjusted life *** this retrospective cohort,patients of all ages with a diagnosis of PCE between 2006 and 2019 were evaluated in a referral center in Bogotá,Colombia.A descriptive analysis of demographic data,clinical history,imaging findings,type of surgery,histopathological diagnosis,outcome,and follow-up was performed using the Engel *** This study included refractory PCE patients of all ages who were evaluated by the epilepsy surgery group of the Hospital Universitario San Ignacio from 2006 to ***,imaging and surgical variables were obtained from the medical records and *** Thirteen patients were included in the study,including 8 males and 5 *** mean age of diagnosis was 8.8 years,while the mean age of surgery was 25 *** most frequent clinical finding was intellectual *** most common findings on magnetic resonance imaging were encephalomalacia and *** 61.5%of the patients,the lateralization of video-EEG matched with brain magnetic resonance imaging *** most frequent types of surgery performed were lobectomies,lesionectomies and cortical ***-freedom was achieved in approximately one third of the patients;however,more than half of the patients were free of disabling seizures or had significant improvement after *** PCE surgery is scarcely performed worldwide,therefore the effectiveness and outcomes are quite variable in the reported *** this study,we show that patients with PCE can obtain great benefits in terms of reduction of seizures with a low risk of surgical complications,encouraging the use of this type of procedure in carefully selected patients.

Intense exercise increases HDL level in children regardless of body weight

Childhood obesity seems to be increasing at a disturbing rate. Exercise and diet are recommended to combat this epidemic. Light and moderate physical activity is associated with health benefits, whereas intense physical activity is associated with normal BMI and low cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study was to assess the metabolic response to a graded exercise test (GXT) in children with different body weight. Eight boys and nine girls underwent a GXT on a treadmill according to Blake protocol. These children were 7-9 years old. The participants were divided into three groups according to their body weight: normal-weight, overweight, and obese. After GXT, lactate and HDL levels increased significantly in all three groups
