The Efficacy of 1% Chlorhexidine Gel on the Reduction of Dry Socket Occurence Following Surgical Third Molar Extraction—Pilot Study

Aim & Objectives: The aim of this prospective pilot-study was to assess the efficacy of intra alveolar application of 1% chlorhexidine gel (CHX) on the reduction of dry socket (DS) occurrence following surgical extraction of mandibular third molars. Materials and Methods: A randomized split-mouth-design study included twenty-five patients with bilaterally impacted lower third molars (partial or full bone) requiring full thickness mucoperiastal flap reflection for extraction. Following surgical extraction of third lower molar, 2 ml of gel containing 1% chlorhexidine digluconate (Chlorhexamed? Gel 1%) were placed in the experimental side, and saline solution was used for irrigation in the control side of extraction sockets, both followed by suturing of extraction site. The surgeries and follow up examinations were performed by the same surgeon. The follow up visits were performed at 48 hours and on day seven, post surgery where presence or absence of dry socket using the Blum criteria for diagnosis was evaluated and pain intensity by Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) 0 - 100 was observed. Results: In this pilot study, dry socket was present in 4.0 and 28.0% of cases in the experimental and control groups, respectively (P = 0.048). Fisher’s test revealed a statistically significant reduction of dry socket occurrence following the use of 1% CHX gel versus saline solution. Conclusion: The application of CHX gel 1% may significantly reduce the incidence of DS following third molar extraction. Prophylactic use of CHX gel 1% may be suggested in all patients, especially in the patients at risk of development of DS.

The Color of Natural Teeth Investigated by Visual Perception and Spectrophotometer

The advantage of electronic devices is to eliminate the subjectivity. Based on individual capabilities, visual perception has its disadvantages. The aim of this study was to find out the possible shade difference between the upper and lower teeth, visual perception versus spectrophotometry as well as proving that females are better in visual perception of colour matching. 82 subjects (dental students) of this study determined the color of each other’s natural teeth. The color of 1640 teeth (incisors, canines and premolars), was matched by visual perception and by Vita Easyshade spectrophotometer. The matching was focused on the middle third of buccal surfaces of the examined teeth. In this study, it was found that there was a difference of color between the teeth of the upper and lower jaw. The percentage of the accordance between two methods was 28.35% for all examined teeth. The color determination at central incisors showed the highest value of accordance 40.85%. Based on Vitapan 3D Mastershade, the most frequent color was 2M2.

The Relation between the Preferred Chewing Side and Occlusal Force Measured by T-Scan III System

Occlusal force has the main role in determining the teeth health in general and determining the chewing, muscle and TMJ function. The objective of this study was to find if there was any relation between the preferred chewing side and the force, measured by T-scan III system. The total number of 90 (46 female and 44 male) dental students was included in this study. They were asked whether their preferred chewing side was right, left or both. Afterwards, the occlusal forces in habitual occlusion, using T-Scan III Electronic device (IP-CO position mode, MA-mode, MA sensitivity setting) were measured. The data were presented as Mean ± SD. Spearman correlation was used to find the correlation between the occlusal force and chewing side. Differences in P 0.05) and the right side (r = 0.143, P > 0.05) according to the preferred chewing side. In this study, the relation between the preferred chewing side and occlusal force was found.

Change in dielectric relaxation with the presence of water in highly filled composites

Microbe-derived carbon materials for electrical energy storage and conversion

Microbes are microscopic living organisms that surround us which include bacteria, archaea, most protozoa, and some fungi and algae. In recent years, microbes have been explored as novel precursors to synthesize carbon-based（nano）materials and as substrates or templates to produce carbon-containing（nano）composites. Being greener and more affordable, microbe-derived carbons（MDCs） offer good potential for energy applications. In this review, we describe the unique advantages of MDCs and outline the common procedures to prepare them. We also extensively discuss the energy applications of MDCs including their use as electrodes in supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries, and as electrocatalysts for processes such as oxygen reduction, oxygen evolution, and hydrogen evolution reactions which are essential for fuel cell and water electrochemical splitting cells. Based on the literature trend and our group＇s expertise, we propose potential research directions for developing new types of MDCs. This review, therefore, provides the state-of-the-art of a new energy chemistry concept. We expect to stimulate future research on the applications of MDCs that may address energy and environmental challenges that our societies are facing.

Early identification of pathogenic bacteria in food,water,and bodily fluids is very important and yet challenging,owing to sample complexities and large sample volumes that need to be rapidly *** screening methods based on plate counting or molecular analysis present various tradeoffs with regard to the detection time,accuracy/sensitivity,cost,and sample preparation ***,we present a computational live bacteria detection system that periodically captures coherent microscopy images of bacterial growth inside a 60-mm-diameter agar plate and analyses these time-lapsed holograms using deep neural networks for the rapid detection of bacterial growth and the classification of the corresponding *** performance of our system was demonstrated by the rapid detection of Escherichia coli and total coliform bacteria(i.e.,Klebsiella aerogenes and Klebsiella pneumoniae ***)in water samples,shortening the detection time by >12 h compared to the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA)-approved *** the preincubation of samples in growth media,our system achieved a limit of detection(LOD)of ~1 colony forming unit(CFU)/L in≤9 h of total test *** platform is highly cost-effective(~$0.6/test)and has high-throughput with a scanning speed of 24 cm2/min over the entire plate surface,making it highly suitable for integration with the existing methods currently used for bacteria detection on agar *** by deep learning,this automated and cost-effective live bacteria detection platform can be transformative for a wide range of applications in microbiology by significantly reducing the detection time and automating the identification of colonies without labelling or the need for an expert.

Nanofiller Dispersion in Polymer Dielectrics

Nanodielectric composites have been developed in recent years attempting to improve the dielectric properties such as dielectric constant, dielectric strength and voltage endurance. Among various investigations, nanoparticle dispersion was particularly emphasized in this work. General Electric Global Research Center in Niskayuna NY USA has investigated various nanoparticles, nanocomposites and nanocomposite synthesis methods intending to understand particle dispersion and their impact on the nanocomposite dielectric properties. The breakdown strength and microstructures of the nanocomposites containing different particles were studied for projects related to capacitor and electrical insulation technologies. The nanocomposite synthesis methods either employed commerical nanoparticles or utilized nanoparticles that were self-assembled (in-situ precipitation) in a matrix. Our investigations have shown that nanocomposites prepared with solution chemistry were more favorable for producing uniform dispersion of nanoparticles. Structural information of nanocomposites was studied with transmission electron microscopy and the interection between particles and matrix polymers were tentatively probed using dielectric spectroscopy. In these new class of materials high energy densities on the order of 15J/cc were achievable in nanocomposites.

＜正＞ Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry （GC/MS） is the main device for lexicological screening. Although solid phase extraction （SPE） methods have been developing each day. the comparison of the liquid- liquid （LL） and SPE has not been explored for rutin lexicological screening of biological samples. We compared LL and SPE method for the most encountered lexicological drugs in the emergency department using recovery values in GC/MS analysis. We found that the recovery of an antidepressanl amytriptilline. a non - steroidal anti - inflammatory drug diclophenac and an antihislamine chlorpheniramine maleal was 96.71 ±2.62. 90.99±3.84. 93.43±3.15 for LL and 87.05± 9. 33. 81.43 ± 1.76. 80.97 ± 3.85 for SPE respectively. The difference belween the LL and SPE extraction was statistically significanl （p＜ 0.01）. In conclusion, our resulls show that the recovery values of LL extraction used in this study is higher than SPE. thus offers an inexpensive and acceplable extraction method for the screening of toxicological emergency.

Background:Shunt systems are used to provide cerebrospinal fluid drainage in the treatment of ***,antibiotic-impregnated shunt systems are used to prevent colonization in the ventriculoperitoneal ***-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA)is the most common causative microorganism of shunt *** aim of the study is to investigate effects of several substances on MRSA biofilms in the ventriculoperitoneal ***:The present study consists of mainly eight groups(each has two subgroups as antibiotic-impregnated and nonantibiotic-impregnated catheters).In addition,each group contains six molds using MRSA *** this study,daptomycin(DAPT)(2 mg/ml),vancomycin(VAN)(10 mg/ml),linezolid(LIN)(2 mg/ml),N-acetylcysteine(NAC)(6 mg/ml),and various combinations of these substances were used to evaluate the treatment against MRSA using scanning electron microscope(SEM)images and microbiological ***:The colony count in the antibiotic-impregnated samples significantly decreased compared to nonantibiotic-impregnated samples in the MRSA,MRSA+DAPT,and MRSA+LIN groups(p<0.01),***,the colony count in antibiotic-impregnated samples significantly increased compared to nonantibiotic-impregnated samples in NAC+DAPT and NAC+VAN groups(p<0.01),***:The results showed that the use of antibiotic-impregnated catheters has a significant impact on the prevention of infection whereas the combination of NAC and DAPT showed better antibiofilm and antibacterial effects than other combinations on the prevention and treatment of nonantibiotic-impregnated catheter infections.
