Athletes who train on unstable compared to stable surfaces exhibit unique postural control strategies in response to balance perturbations

Background:Athletes have been shown to exhibit better balance compared to non-athletes(NON).However,few studies have investigated how the surface on which athletes train affects the strategies adopted to maintain *** distinct athlete groups who experience different types of sport-specific balance training are stable surface athletes(SSA) such as basketball players and those who train on unstable surfaces(USA) such as *** purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of training surface on dynamic balance in athletes compared to ***:Eight NON,eight SSA,and eight USA performed five 20-s trials in each of five experimental conditions including a static condition and four dynamic conditions in which the support surface translated in the anteroposterior(AP) or mediolateral(ML) planes using positive or negative feedback *** entropy(Ap En) and root mean square distance(RMS) of the center of pressure(Co P) were calculated for the AP and ML *** 3 × 5(group × condition) repeated measures ANOVAs were used to determine significant effects of group and condition on variables of ***:USA exhibited smaller Ap En values than SSA in the AP signals while no significant differences were observed in the ML Co P ***,the negative feedback conditions were associated with significantly greater RMS values than the positive feedback ***:USA exhibit unique postural strategies compared to *** unique strategies seemingly exhibit a direction-specific attribute and may be associated with divergent motor control strategies.

Iris manipulation during phacoemulsification:intraoperative and postoperative complications

AIM:To quantify intraoperative and postoperative complications in complex phacoemulsification cataract extraction(phacoemulsification)with iris manipulation compared to non-complex and complex phacoemulsification without iris ***:All phacoemulsification cases at the University of Colorado between January 1,2014,and June 30,2017 were *** criteria for the primary outcome of intraoperative complications were planned combination surgery and eyes with less than 28 d *** criteria for the secondary outcomes of postoperative complications were unplanned additional surgery,and chronic steroid eye drop use prior to *** including sex,race/ethnicity,surgery length,visual acuity,intraoperative and postoperative complications,and intraocular pressures(IOP)were collected and analyzed utilizing general linear and Logistic regression ***:The medical records of 5772 eyes were reviewed(500 complex without iris manipulation,367 with iris manipulation).The number of any intraoperative complication in the complex with iris manipulation and complex without iris manipulation groups was 15(4.1%)and 26(5.2%),respectively,compared to 41(0.8%)in the non-complex *** inflammation was found in 135(2.8%)non-complex cases,20(4.1%)complex cases without iris manipulation,and 20(5.6%)complex cases with iris *** adjusted odds ratio of postoperative inflammation in phacoemulsification with iris manipulation compared to non-complex was 2.3(95%CI:1.3-4.0,P=0.005).The rate of IOP spikes>10 mm Hg was significantly greater in cases with iris manipulation(P=0.001).CONCLUSION:Complex cases have more intraoperative ***,only complex cases with iris manipulation led to increase rates of postoperative inflammation and IOP spikes>10 mm Hg.

Association of Osteopontin Gene Promoter Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms with Bull Semen Quality

Osteopontin (OPN) is a protein found at higher concentrations in the seminal plasma of bulls with above average fertility. Polymorphisms have been reported within the OPN gene promoter that can affect production of this protein and thus, affect fertility. Therefore, Angus (n = 5) and Angus x Gelbvieh (Balancer, n = 14) and Angus x Brahman (n = 15) bulls were evaluated for presence of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in the Bos taurus OPN gene (GenBank: AY878328.1) promoter region, and their possible effects on bull semen quality as evaluated by computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA). Semen was collected by electroejaculation 6 to 9 times from each bull, and each semen collection was evaluated by CASA for motile, progressive and rapid sperm within 5 mins of ejaculation. The bulls were genotyped for reported single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in the promoter region of the OPN gene through amplification of two 700 base pair (bp) dNA fragments and sequencing of the resulting PCR products. Seven SNP sites were identified, at bp 3379, 3490, 3492, 5075, 5205, 5209, and 5263 of the OPN gene. The SNP identified at bp 5205, 5209 and 5263 had not been previously reported. Individual SNP sites were evaluated as the main effect on CASA sperm motility variables in a SAS MIXEd model for repeated measures. A thymine to guanine substitution at bp 3379 was associated with increased (P ≤ 0.02) percentage of motile, progressive and rapid sperm in Angus x Brahman bulls, and tended (P ≤ 0.10) to increase the same sperm motility parameters in Angus, and Angus x Gelbvieh bulls. The percentages of motile, progressive and rapid sperm were similar (P ≥ 0.05) among genotypes for the other 6 SNP identified. These results suggest that identification and genotyping of polymorphisms within the promoter region of the bovine OPN gene may be useful for selecting bulls with improved sperm motility parameters.

This study used a 3d coupled CFd–dEM model to assess how slugs tend towards steady state in single slug horizontal pneumatic *** slug length,inlet velocity and initial stationary layer fractions were systematically varied for a total of 72 *** made observation that slugs tend towards a steady state was confirmed via a theoretical *** derivation shows that slugs move towards their steady state lengths *** allowed for a calculation of a characteristic time scale which is a measure of how quickly a slug tends towards the steady *** theoretical estimate which is a function of slug porosity,steady length,velocity and stationary layer fraction has good agreement with simulated results.A link between steady slug length and solids loading ratio was also shown.

Hospitalized prevalence and 5-year mortality for IBd:Record linkage study

AIM:To establish the hospitalized prevalence of severe Crohn's disease(Cd) and ulcerative colitis(UC) in Wales from 1999 to 2007;and to investigate long-term mortality after hospitalization and associations with social deprivation and other socio-demographic ***:Record linkage of administrative inpatient and mortality data for 1467 and 1482 people hospitalised as emergencies for ≥ 3d for Cd and UC,*** main outcome measures were hospitalized prevalence,mortality rates and standardized mortality ratios for up to 5 years follow-up after ***:Hospitalized prevalence was 50.1 per 100 000 population for Cd and 50.6 for *** hospitalized prevalence of Cd was significantly higher(P d was highest in people aged 16-29 years,but the prevalence of UC was similar in males(51.0) and females(50.1),and increased continuously with *** hospital-ized prevalence of Cd was slightly higher in the most deprived areas,but there was no association between social deprivation and hospitalized prevalence of *** was 6.8% and 14.6% after 1 and 5 years follow-up for Cd,and 9.2% and 20.8% after 1 and 5 years for *** both Cd and UC,there was little discernible association between mortality and social deprivation,distance from hospital,urban/rural residence and ***:Cd and UC have distinct demographic *** higher prevalence of hospitalized Cd in more deprived areas may reflect higher prevalence and higher hospital dependency.

African Americans have exceptionally high rates of hypertension and hypertension related complications. It is commonly reported that the blood pressure lowering efficacy of renin angiotensin system(RAS) inhibitors is attenuated in African Americans due to a greater likelihood of having a low renin profile. Therefore these agents are often not recommended as initial therapy in African Americans with hypertension. However, the high prevalence of comorbid conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular and chronic kidney disease makes treatment with RAS inhibitors more compelling. despite lower circulating renin levels and a less significant fall in blood pressure in response to RAS inhibitors in African Americans, numerous clinical trials support the efficacy of RAS inhibitors to improve clinical outcomes in this population, especially in those with hypertension and risk factors for cardiovascular and related diseases. Here, we discuss the rationale of RAS blockade as part of a comprehensive approach to attenuate the high rates of premature morbidity and mortality associated with hypertension among African Americans.
