AIM: To further define variables associated with increased incidences of severe toxicities following administration of yttrium-90 (90Y) ***: Fifty-eight patients undergoing 79 treatments were retrospectively assessed for development of clinical and laboratory toxicity incidence following 90Y administration. Severe toxicity events were defined using Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events version 4.03 and defined as grade ≥ 3. Univariate logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the effect of different factors on the incidence of severe toxicity events. Multicollinearity was assessed for all factors with P 90Y microsphere therapy.

Background:In this paper we determined the benefits of image registration on estimating longitudinal retinal nerve fiber layer thickness(RNFLT)***:RNFLT maps around the optic nerve head(ONH)of healthy primate eyes were measured using Optical Coherence Tomography(OCT)weekly for 30 *** automatic algorithm based on mutual information(MI)and the other semi-automatic algorithm based on log-polar transform cross-correlation using manually segmented blood vessels(LPCC_MSBV),were used to register retinal maps *** compared the precision and recall between manually segmented image pairs for the two algorithms using a linear mixed effects ***:We found that the precision calculated between manually segmented image pairs following registration by LPCC_MSBV algorithm is significantly better than the one following registration by MI algorithm(p<<0.0001).Trend of the all-rings and temporal,superior,nasal and inferior(TSNI)quadrants average of RNFLT over time in healthy primate eyes are not affected by *** of clock hours 1,2,and 10 showed significant change over 30 weeks(p=0.0058,0.0054,and 0.0298 for clock hours 1,2 and 10 respectively)without registration,but stayed constant over time with ***:The LPCC_MSBV provides better registration of RNFLT maps recorded on different dates than the automatic MI *** of RNFLT maps can improve clinical analysis of glaucoma progression.

Sustained inflammation from infiltrated immune cells plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis （UC）. Previously, we established the role of ribosomal protein L13a in the regulation of an inflammation-responsive post-transcriptional operon in myeloid cells. However, the role of this protein as a molecular cue to control the severity of colitis is not known. Here, we examined whether L13a-dependent translational control in macrophages could serve as an endogenous defense against colitis. The administration of dextran sodium sulfate induced experimental colitis in myeloid-specific L13a-knockout （KO） and control mice. Pathological scoring and injury to the colon mucosa evaluated the severity of colitis. The steady-state levels of several pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines were determined through ELISA and polyribosome profile analysis. Rapid weight loss, severe rectal bleeding, shortening of the colon, and significantly reduced survival rate were observed in the KO mice. Histopathological analysis of the colons of KO mice showed a severe disruption of epithelial crypts with immune cell infiltrates. Elevated levels of several inflammatory cytokines and chemokines and abrogation of their naturally imposed translational silencing were observed in the colons of the KO mice. Higher serum levels of several pro-inflammatory cytokines and the release of gut bacteria and endotoxins into the blood streams of KO mice were detected, suggesting the amplification of the inflammatory response to septicemia. Taken together, these results reveal an essential role for L13a in the endogenous protection against UC and demonstrate the potential for new therapeutic opportunities through the deliberate promotion of this mechanism.

This experiment was conducted in order to verify the role of Vitamin K1 as a cell growth inhibitor on the U937 cell line. This experiment was performed in two parts—one with a lesser concentration of Vitamin K1, and the other with a range of concentrations from low-to-high. Through the remaining number of U937 cells, as well as cell areas, it was concluded that the presence of Vitamin K1 reduces the number of cancer cells. It was also concluded that as Vitamin K1 concentration increases, so does the frequency and effects of apoptosis.

Hafnium carbide structural foams synthesized from polymer precursors

Hafnium carbide (HfC) was applied in space and aerospace due to its ultra high melting temperature, high specific strength and moderate oxidation resistance. A novel synthesizing method was used to produce low density and high strength HfC structural foams through the thermolysis and pyrolysis of Hf containing polymer precursors (mixing of hafnium trifluoroacetylacetonate and epoxy) under vacuum atmosphere. The X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the produced foam is primarily composed of HfC containing 9%-10% HfO2. Several polymer powder compaction methods were used to improve the mechanical properties of HfC foam. Compression strengths of 200 MPa are achieved for HfC foams with density of 1.9 g/cm(3) (total porosity about 85%). The proposed methodology of synthesizing HfC foam has the advantages of simple, inexpensive and less production time than alternate methods.
