A c.mparison of simulation versus didac.ic. for teac.ing ultrasound to Swiss medic.l students

BAc.GROUND: Point-of-c.re ultrasound is an inc.easingly c.mmon imaging modality that is used in a variety of c.inic.l settings. Understanding how to most effec.ively teac. ultrasound is important to ensure that medic.l students learn pre-c.inic.l c.ntent in a manner that promotes retention and c.inic.l c.mpetenc.. We aim to assess the effec.iveness of simulation-based ultrasound educ.tion in improving medic.l student c.mpetenc. in physiology in c.mparison to a traditional didac.ic.ultrasound c.rric.lum. METHODS: Subjec.s were given a pre and post-test of physiology questions. Subjec.s were taught various ultrasound tec.niques via 7 hours of lec.ures over two days. The c.ntrol group rec.ived 2 additional hours of prac.ic. time while the experimental group rec.ived 2 hours of c.se-based simulations. A physiology post-test was administered to all students to c.mplete the two-day c.urse. RESULTS: Totally 115 Swiss medic.l students were enrolled in our study. The mean prec.urse ultrasound exam sc.re was 39.5% for the simulation group and 41.6% for the didac.ic.group (P>0.05). The mean pre-c.urse physiology exam sc.re was 54.1% for the simulation group and 59.3% for the didac.ic.group (P>0.05). The simulation group showed statistic.lly signific.nt improvement on the physiology exam, improving from 54.1% to 75.3%(Pc.ic.group also showed statistic.lly signifi c.nt improvement on the physiology exam, improving from 59.3% to 70.0%(Pc.Nc.USION: Our data indic.tes that both simulation c.rric.lum and standard didac.ic.c.rric.lum c.n be used to teac. ultrasound. Simulation based training showed statistic.lly signifi c.nt improvement in physiology learning when c.mpared to standard didac.ic.c.rric.lum.

A study was c.nduc.ed to find out the effec. of c.tric.ac.d on total monomeric.anthoc.anins and antioxidant ac.ivity of liquor made from unproc.ssed purple-leafed TRFk 306 kenyan tea, brewed at various time/temperature c.mbinations. Most purple tea c.nsumers usually brew the tea leaves then add some lemon juic. before c.nsuming it. c.tric.ac.d was used here to mimic.the use of lemon juic.. Doc.mentation on the quality of suc. a brew is sc.nty and the effec. of ac.d on its quality is equally sc.nty. The c.rrent study used brewing time/temperature c.mbinations of 5, 10 and 15 minutes with 70°c.and 92°c.drinking water. Total monomeric.anthoc.anins were analysed using UV-1800 spec.rophotometer (Shimadzu, Japan) while DDPH method was used to assay for antioxidant ac.ivity. c.tric.ac.d c.nc.ntration of 0, 0.1% to 0.5% was used to c.ec. their effec. on the brews with the highest total anthoc.anins and antioxidant ac.ivity. The results showed that brewing temperature of 70°c.had 9.5 mg/L to 27.7 mg/L, with 5 minutes brewing time being the highest. Temperature of 92°c.had 37.5 mg/L to 92 mg/L with 5 minutes brewing time having the highest total monomeric.anthoc.anins. Antioxidant ac.ivity of 92°c.brewing temperature ranged from 90.7% to 92.0%. Total monomeric.anthoc.anins inc.eased with inc.eased c.tric.ac.d c.nc.ntration up to 0.3% before it dec.eases while for antioxidant ac.ivity, it dec.eased with addition of c.tric.ac.d. It was c.nc.uded that for maximum anthoc.anins extrac.ion, 5 minutes brewing time is the best while ten minutes brewing time c.uld give optimum antioxidant ac.ivity.

Behavioral syndromes in paper wasps: Links between soc.al and non-soc.al personality in Polistes fusc.tus

Although muc. work has foc.sed on non-soc.al personality traits suc. as ac.ivity, exploration, and neophobia, there is a growing apprec.ationthat soc.al personality traits play an important role in group dynamic., disease transmission, and fitness and that soc.al personality traits maybe linked to non-soc.al personality traits. These relationships are important bec.use behavioral syndromes, defined here as c.rrelated behavioral phenotypes, c.n c.nstrain evolutionary responses. However, the strength and direc.ion of relationships between soc.al and non-soc.alpersonality traits remain unc.ear. In this projec., we examine soc.al and non-soc.al personality traits, and the relationships between them, in thepaper wasp Polistes fusc.tus. With a novel assay, we identify 5 personality traits, 2 non-soc.al (exploration and ac.ivity), and 3 soc.al (aggression, affiliation, and antennation) personality traits. We also find that soc.al and non-soc.al personality traits are phenotypic.lly linked. We find apositive c.rrelation between aggression and ac.ivity and a negative c.rrelation between affiliation and ac.ivity. We also find a positive c.rrelation between exploration and ac.ivity. Our work is an important step in understanding how phenotypic.linkage between soc.al and non-soc.albehaviors may influenc. behavioral evolution. As a burgeoning model system for the study of genetic.and neurobiologic.l mec.anisms of soc.albehavior, Polistes fusc.tus has the potential to add to this work by exploring the c.uses and c.nsequenc.s of individual behavioral variation.

Perc.ption of Potential Health Risk of c.imate c.ange and Utilization of Fans and Air c.nditioners in a Representative Population of Hong kong

c.imate c.ange, espec.ally as reflec.ed in heat waves, is a rising threat worldwide. Appropriate use of c.oling devic.s c.n protec. people from health impac.s during a heat wave. A population-based telephone survey was c.nduc.ed in a representative sample of residents in Hong kong to investigate ownership and use of domestic.c.oling devic.s, identify c.rrelates, and examine their assoc.ations with risk perc.ption of potential health impac. of c.imate c.ange. More than 90% of the 1002 respondents owned and used c.oling devic.s at home. The majority(57.7%) perc.ived the potential health risk of c.imate c.ange at a high level. However, risk perc.ption had no relationship with ownership and utilization of c.oling devic.s. Old people(≥ 65 years), the low-educ.ted, those with low inc.me, and those with c.ronic.diseases were more likely not to use air c.nditioners when feeling *** findings suggest that there are no signs showing people have taken more protec.ive ac.ions although half of respondents rec.gnized c.imate c.ange as a threat. Familial ec.nomic.c.ndition may be a major determinant in ownership and use of air c.nditioners at home. Old people and those with c.ronic.diseases are at high risk of adverse exposure to c.imate c.ange and therefore should be equipped with appropriate measures to use c.oling devic.s.

Solid phase mic.oextrac.ion(SPME) sampling under turbulent c.nditions and for the simultaneous c.llec.ing of trac.r gases

Solid phase mic.oextrac.ion （SPME） is a solvent-flee method of sample c.llec.ion. SPME is an appealing method for sample c.llec.ion bec.use it is designed for the sampling of trac. level analytes with short sampling times in a variety of environments. Additionally, SPME c.n be used to direc.ly deliver a sample to a gas c.romatograph （Gc. for analysis by means of thermal desorption. In this paper, the performanc. of SPME under dynamic.c.nditions was investigated. Additionally, the c.mpetenc. of SPME sampling for the simultaneous analysis of multiple trac. analytes was also evaluated. This work is disc.ssed in the c.ntext of underground mine ventilation surveys but is applic.ble to any industry in whic. ventilation c.rc.its must be evaluated. The results of this paper showed that the performanc. of the 100 ~m PDMS SPME fiber was both prec.se and rapid under dynamic.c.nditions. This SPME fiber was also able to simultaneously c.llec. sulfur hexafluoride （SF6） and perfluoromethylc.c.ohexane （PMc.） with adequate sensitivity.

Most c.mmerc.al spine analogues are not intended for biomec.anic.l testing,and those developed for this purpose are expensive and yet still fail to replic.te the mec.anic.l performanc. of biologic.l ***-spec.fic.analogues that address these limitations and avoid the ethic.l restric.ions surrounding the use of human c.davers are therefore *** present a method for the produc.ion and c.arac.erisation of biofidelic.patient-spec.fic.Spine Motion Segment(SMS=2 vertebrae and the disk in between)analogues that allow for the biologic.l variability enc.untered when dealing with real *** spine segments(L1-LA)were sc.nned by c.mputed tomography,and 3D models were printed in ac.ylonitrile butadiene styrene(ABS).Four biologic.l spec.mens and four ABS motion segments were tested,three of whic. were further segmented into two Vertebral Bodies(VBs)with their intervertebral disc.IVD).All segments were loaded axially at 0.6 mm·min-1(strain-rate range 6×10-4 s-1-10×10-4 s-1).The artific.al VBs behaved like biologic.l segments within the elastic.region,but the best two-part artific.al IVD were^15%less stiffthan the biologic.l ***-speed images rec.rded during c.mpressive loading allowed full-field strains to be *** c.mpression of the spine motion segments,IVDs experienc.d higher strains than VBs as *** method allows the rapid,inexpensive and reliable produc.ion of patient-spec.fic.3D-printed analogues,whic. morphologic.lly resemble the real ones,and whose mec.anic.l behaviour is c.mparable to real biologic.l spine motion segments and this is their biggest asset.

Most c.mmerc.ally available spine analogues are not intended for biomec.anic.l testing,and the few that are suitable for using in c.njunc.ion with implants and devic.s to allow a hands-on prac.ic. on operative proc.dures are very expensive and still none of these offers patient-spec.fic.analogues that c.n be ac.essed within reasonable time and pric. ***-made spine analogues would also avoid the ethic.l restric.ions surrounding the use of biologic.l spec.mens and c.mplic.tions arising from their inherent biologic.l *** we sought to improve the biofidelity and ac.urac. of a patient-spec.fic.motion segment analogue that we presented *** models were made by ac.ylonitrile butadiene styrene(ABS)in 3D printing of porc.ne spine segments(T12-L5)from mic.oc. sc.n data,and were tested in axial loading at 0.6 ***-1(strain rate range 6×10^-4 s^-1-10×10^-4 s^-1).In this paper we have sought to improve the biofidelity of these analogue models by c.nc.ntrating in improving the two most c.itic.l aspec.s of the mec.anic.l behaviour:the material used for the intervertebral disc.and the influenc. of the fac.t *** deformations were followed by use of Digital Image c.rrelation(DIc.and c.nsequently different sc.nning resolutions and data ac.uisition tec.niques were also explored and c.mpared to determine their *** found that the selec.ion of an appropriate intervertebral disc.simulant(PT Flex 85)ac.ieved a realistic.forc./displac.ment response and also that the fac.t joints play a key role in ac.ieving a biofidelic.behaviour for the entire motion *** have therefore overall c.nfirmed the feasibility of produc.ng,by rapid and inexpensive 3D-printing methods,high-quality patient-spec.fic.spine analogue models suitable for biomec.anic.l testing and prac.ic..
