Climate-driven variations in productivity reveal adaptive strategies in Iberian cork oak agroforestry systems

Prevention of de novo HBV infection by the presence of anti-HBs in transplanted patients receiving core antibody-positive livers

AIM： To analyze whether the presence of anti-HBs in liver transplant recipients is effective in preventing HBV infection. METHOdS： Twenty-three patients receiving anti-HBc positive liver were studied. Nine recipients were anti-HBc positive as a result of previous HBV infection. Of them, one also received HBV vaccine during the pre-liver transplantation period. Fourteen recipients were anti-HBs positive due to HBV vaccine administered during the pretransplant period. Liver biopsy was obtained in 10/14 anti-HBc negative/anti-HBs positive recipients and in 4/9 anti-HBc positive recipients. RESULTS： After a mean foUow-up period of 46 months, 1 recipient with protective serum anti-HBs levels developed de novo HBV infection as a consequence of immune escape HBV mutants. Among the 14 vaccinated anti-HBc negative/anti-HBs positive recipients, 1/10 patients with available liver biopsy （10%） had liver HBV-dNA at 13 mo post-liver transplantation without serum viral markers and did not develop de novo HBV *** vaccinated anti-HBc positive recipient without HBV vaccine response was HBV-dNA positive in serum and liver, viral dNA was continuously negative in the following tests, so a spontaneous seroconversion was diagnosed. CONCLUSION： The presence of anti-HBs as a result of HBV vaccine or past HBV infection seems to be effective at protecting patients receiving livers from anti-HBc positive donors. However, the emergence of immune escape HBV mutants, which can evade the anti-HBs protection, should be considered as a risk of HBV infection.

Performance evaluation of lateral canopy shakers with catch frame for continuous harvesting of oranges for juice industry

Citrus is mainly oriented to fresh consumption,and harvesting is usually performed ***,the high cost of harvesting and the low availability of labour can compromise the profitability of the crop when it is destined to juice *** development of citrus mechanical harvesting for industrial processing is conditioned to reach a high fruit removal efficiency,with a reduced damage to both fruit and *** current machines available are very large,requiring extensive plantations with long rows of trees to be *** this study,two lateral canopy shakers equipped with a catch frame were evaluated to harvest independently both sides of the hedge on intensive citrus plantations with the main objective of determining their performance and *** lateral canopy shakers tested were three tractor-drawn machines,one commercial machine and two *** tested machines reached a mean value of 78%of fruit ***,the prototypes,equipped with a catch frame,were able to recover a mean value of 70%of *** the results were promising,for achieving an efficient result,the application of this harvesting technology still requires a process of improvement,and the adaptation of both the machine and the *** machines should reduce the amount of post-harvest ground fruit(5.9%-10.4%).Tree damages generated by the contact of the catch frame with the trunk and the metal rods with main branches were the most ***,it is still necessary to increase the ground speed of the machinery and improving the design of the rods,regulating the rod penetrating deep in the canopy to improve the fruit recovery and limit the damage caused to the trees.

Fluorosis and dental Caries in the Hydrogeological Environments of Southeastern Communities in the State of Morelos, Mexico

Objectives: 1) To identify the hydrogeological characteristics and fluoride (F-) concentration in drinking water in the southeast of the state of Morelos, Mexico, and 2) to estimate the association between the prevalence and severity of fluorosis, dental caries, and water F-?concentration. Methods: A hydrogeological model was developed to determine the vertical distribution of lithostratigraphic units, rocks’ hydraulic conductivities, and groundwater flow characteristics. A total of 649 schoolchildren from two communities received oral examinations. One community was located in an area with 0.75 mg F-/L in the water supply and the other in an area with 1.6 mg F-/L. Fluorosis was assessed using the Thylstrup & Fejerskov Index (TFI) and the dental caries were assessed with the decayed, missing, and filled teeth (dMFT) index. The region groundwater was extracted from an inter-granular aquifer consisting of volcano clasts of intermediate volcanic chemical composition. Results: Oral examinations showed that 32.35% of the children had severe forms of fluorosis (TFI ≥ 4) in the community with 1.60 mg F-/L and 7.8% in the 0.75 mg F-/L community (p dMFT = 0.53 (±1.28) and 0.42 (±0.95) in the community with 1.60 mg F-/L and 0.75 mg F-/L, respectively (p = 0.2259). Conclusions: The increasing extraction of underground water was associated with deeper water flows and higher F-?concentration. In the community with high F-concentration, a third of the children showed objectionable levels of fluorosis. Adequate groundwater management actions are required to reduce fluorosis risk.

Early Feeding vs 5-day Fasting after distal Elective Bowel Anastomoses in Children.A Randomized Controlled Trial

Purpose: determine the safety and efficacy of early enteral feeding after distal elective bowel anastomoses (dEBA) in children. Methods: Controlled randomized trial including pediatric patients with dEBA, excluding non-elective and high risk patients. Variables: demographics, operative time, anastomosis placement, beginning peristalsis and bowel movement, time to full diet intake, post-operative stay, persisting vomiting and abdominal distention, wound infection or dehiscence, anastomotic leak, reoperation, death. Randomization into: 1) Experimental group (EG): early feeding group, after a minimum 24 hours fasting period, oral fluids and diet was started;2) Control group (CG): obligatory 5-day fasting. descriptive Statistics: Student’s t test for quantitative and Chi square for qualitative variables, a p-value 0.05 was considered significant. Results: 60 patients were included since June 2003 to May 2004, 30 ineach group. Mean age 2 years, weight16 kg, malnutrition 33%. Stomal Ethiology: Anorectal-malformation 46%, Hirschsprung 13%, inflammatory 35%, tumoral 5%. Mostly in colon 71%. Mean surgical time 142 min. None developed vomiting or required nasogastric-tube. Mild abdominal distension 13%, mild fever 16.5% and wound complications 18%. Anastomosis leakage 6.5%, none required reoperations. demographic variables showed no statistical differences. Full oral intake was in the 2nd postoperative day in the EG vs CG (p = 0.001). Postoperative hospital stay was 6.0 ± 3 in the EG vs 9.8 ± 4 days in the CG with clinical but not statistical significance. Peristalsis beginning, first flatus passage and bowel movements showed no statistical differences. The complication incidence was low and equally distributed. Conclusions: Early feeding after dEBA is safe and well tolerated in children.

New Records for GASTROPOdA Class of Species Found in the Rocky Intertidal Zone of the Marine Priority Region 32,Guerrero,Mexico

The GASTROPOdA class, one of the best known marine environments, is formed by a large number of species and the shape of their shell structure varies greatly. These mollusks are distributed from the intertidal zone all the way to the abyssal zone, and there are also swimming and floating species. This research was conducted at seven sites, located in the Marina Priority Region 32 (MPR 32), located in the State of Guerrero, Mexico. The aim of this report is to document the scope of the geographic distribution of the 34 species of GASTROPOdA class. 11,263 total specimens were analyzed. 108 species were identified, of which four species are new records for Mexico, 15 for the Transitional Mexican Pacific, 11 for the State of Guerrero and four for the MPR 32. Here we report a significant number of new records of species of class GASTROPOdA found on the rocky intertidal zone of the MPR 32. The reporting of these new records, demonstrates the need to focus research efforts on the study of marine diversity, since knowledge in this respect is quite incomplete, especially regarding marine mollusks, a fact that has been reported by the National Commission for the Management and Use of Biodiversity.

Efficacy and long-term evaluation of intramyocardial injection of autologous Cd34-enriched PBMSC in old myocardial infarction

Aims: We have shown that autologous transplant of Cd34+-enriched peripheral-blood mononuclear cells (PBMSC) could restore depressed myocardial function, and sustain adequate myocardial function 12 months after surgery in patients with old (>one year-old) myocardial infarction. Our aim is to report the long-term morbidity and mortality efficacy of this procedure. Methods and results: Seventy patients with an old anteroseptal myocardial infarction were followed for 2 to 7 years, 35 had a revascularization procedure and received an intra-myocardial injection of autologous Cd34+-enriched PBMSC (8 × 108 mononuclear cells/ml including 3 × 107 Cd34+ cells/ml)(Group A). Group B patients only had the revascularization. Abnormal pre-surgical values of LVEF (33.2% ± 4.8%), LVdV (178 ± 13.7 ml), LVSV (120 ± 16 m), LVdd (58.9 ± 3.84 mm), E and A waves without contractility in infarction area in group A patients improved to approximate normal values (50% ± 3% for LVEF;90 ± 9.3 ml for LVdV;80 ± 9.9 ml for LVSV;55.3 ± 3 mm for LVdd;5.2 ± 0.5 cm/s for E wave and 4.18 ± 0.3 cm/s for A wave) 1 year after the procedure and have remained unaltered for all the follow-up period. All the patients remain alive. Only seven patients have been readmitted to the hospital for non-myocardial related events. Group B only 11 patients continued alive to 5 years after surgery and LEVF never increased more than 6%, all of them with many hospitalizations (n ≥ 10) by heart failure events. Conclusion: Intramyocardial injection of Cd34+ highly enriched PBSC represent an encouraging alternative for patients with severely scarred and dysfunctional myocardium.

Adaptability and Stability of Yield and Industrial Grain Quality with and without Fungicide in Brazilian Oat Cultivars

The use of productive cultivars with adaptability and stability and less demanding to fungicide use are critical to the sustainability of production factors. The objective of this work was to determine the per se performance of white oat cultivars and parameters of adaptability and stability on yield and grain quality in the proposition of cultivars more responsive in reducing the use fungicide. The study was conducted in Augusto Pestana, RS, Brazil, between the years 2010 and 2013. The experimental design was randomized blocks with six replicates, three with and three without fungicide. The study evaluated 14 white oat cultivars for yield and industrial capability. The white oat cultivars FAEM 4 Carlasul and URS Corona indicate high grain yield with stability and general adaptability, independent of chemical control. The cultivar URS Corona shows together high yield and thousand grain weight and hectoliter with general adaptability and stability in the absence of fungicide. Although no stability has been detected in industrial yield without the use of fungicides, cultivars of URS Charrua, URS Corona and URS Taura show high means with general adaptability.
