In 2013, we re-inventoried all lianas （≥1 cm diameter measured at 1.3 m from the rooting point） in four I-ha permanent plots distributed one each in four sites of inland tropical dry evergreen forest on the Coromandel Coast （Pudukottai district） of peninsular India, established in 2003. Among the four sites, Shanmuganathapuram （SP） and Araiyapatti （AP） were much disturbed and the other two sites （Karisakkadu--KR and Maramadakki--MM） were moderately disturbed. We inventoried a total of 3425 lianas representing 37 species of 33 genera and 22 families. Over a decade （2003-2013） liana species richness increased at two sites （MM and SP） and no changes occurred at the other two sites. Liana abundance increased by 210, 211,164 and 162 individuals at sites AP, KR, MM and SP, respectively, and basal area increased （from 1.09 to 1.76 m2 at AP, 0.67 to 0.86 m2 at KR, 1.68 to 2.06 mz at MM, and from 0.44 to 1.06 m2 at SP）. Over a 10-year period, three species （Abrus precatorius, Canavalia virosa, and Cocculus hirsutus） were lost and five species （Gloriosa superba, Ampelocissus tomentosa, Capparis sepiaria, Aganosma cymosa and Tiliacora acuminata） were newly added. Total aboveground biomass increased by 18.5, 0.74, 3.6 and 9.5 Mg ha-1, respectively, at sites AP, KR, MM and SP.

Volatile organic compounds(VOCs)are the important precursors of the tropospheric ozone(O3)and secondary organic aerosols(SOA),both of which are known to harm human health and disrupt the earth’s climate system.In this study,VOC emission factors,O3 and SOA formation potentials were estimated for two types of industrial boilers:coal-fired boilers(n=3)and oil-fired boilers(n=3).Results showed that EVOCs concentrations were more than nine times higher for oil-fire d boilers compared to those for coal-fired boilers.Emission factors ofΣVOCs were found to be higher for oil-fired boilers(9.26-32.83 mg-VOC/kg)than for coal-fired boilers(1.57-4.13 mg-VOC/kg).Alkanes and aromatics were obtained as the most abundant groups in coal-fired boilers,while oxygenated organics and aromatics were the most contributing groups in oil-fired boilers.Benzene,n-hexane and o-ethyl toluene were the abundant VOC species in coal-fired boiler emissions,whereas toluene was the most abundant VOC species emitted from oil-fired boilers.O3 and SOA formation potentials were found 12 and 18 times,respectively,higher for oil-fired than for coal-fired boilers.Total OFP ranged from 3.99 to 11.39 mg-O3/kg for coal-fired boilers.For oil-fired boilers,total OFP ranged from 36.16 to 131.93 mg-O3/kg.Moreover,total secondary organic aerosol potential(SOAP)ranged from 65.4 to 122.5 mg-SOA/kg and 779.9 to 2252.5 mg-SOA/kg for the coal-fired and oil-fired boilers,respectively.

The introduction of alleles into commercial crop breeding pipelines is both time consuming and costly.Two technologies that are disrupting traditional breeding processes are doubled haploid(DH)breeding and genome editing(GE).Recently,these techniques were combined into a GE trait delivery system called HI-Edit(Haploid Inducer-Edit).In HI-Edit,the pollen of a haploid inducer line is reprogrammed to deliver GE traits to any variety,obviating recurrent selection.For HI-Edit to operate at scale,an efficient transformable HI line is needed,but most maize varieties are recalcitrant to transformation,and haploid inducers are especially difficult to transform given their aberrant reproductive behaviors.Leveraging marker assisted selection and a three-tiered testing scheme,we report the development of new Iodent and Stiff Stalk maize germplasm that are transformable,have high haploid induction rates,and exhibit a robust,genetically-dominant anthocyanin native trait that may be used for rapid haploid identification.We show that transformation of these elite‘‘HI-Edit”lines is enhanced using the BABYBOOM and WUSCHEL morphogenetic factors.Finally,we evaluate the HI-Edit performance of one of the lines against both Stiff Stalk and non-Stiff Stalk testers.The strategy and results of this study should facilitate the development of commercially scalable HI-Edit systems in diverse crops.

Objective:To investigate the bioactive-constituents of Shemamruthaa(SM),a herbal combination and its therapeutic effects on the mitochondrial functions with reference to lipid peroxidation(LPO),antioxidant status,citric acid cycle enzymes and electron transport chain enzymes in mammary tissues of 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)-anthracene(DMBA)induced mammary carcinoma in rat model.Methods:Adult Female Sprague-Dawley rats were used for the study and were divided into four groups.CroupⅠserved as control and CroupⅡrats were induced mammary carcinoma by administration of DMBA(25 mg/kg b.w.)orally.The normal and cancer-induced rats(GroupⅢ)were treated with SM(400 mg/kg b.w./day)orally by gastric incubation for 14days.CroupⅣrats served as SM-treated control animals.Results:Cancer-induced rats showed a considerably increased level of LPO with concomitant decreased levels of antioxidants,citric acid cycle enzymes,electron transport chain enzymes and cytochrome contents in the mammary tissue.Treatment with SM brought back the aforementioned biochemical parameters to near normal.Conclusions:From the results,it can be inferred that Shemamruthaa possesses significant anticancer effect through its role in attenuation of LPO,prevention of membrane damage and restoring membrane integrity.

A novel Acetazolamide condensed 1,4-dihydropyridines was set up by treating of N-(5-acetamido-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-ylsulfonyl)-3-oxobutanamide with an aryl aldehyde and 25-30%alkali with sight amount of barium nitrate as a catalyst.Confirmation of the synthetic structure of the titled compounds(4-16)was substantiated by thin-layer chromatography(TLC),IR,^(1)H NMR,^(13)C NMR,Mass spectra(MS)and elemental analysis(C,H,and N)were finished.The titled compounds were assessed for anticholinesterase activity against acetylcholinesterase and butyl cholinesterase enzymes.The titled compound produced weak,moderate,or high anticholinesterase activity.Particularly,compound 8 demonstrated the best anticholinesterase activity of all the 1,4-dihydropyridines,with an IC_(50) estimation of 0.08μM and 2.9μM.

Larvicidal,ovicidal and pupicidal activities of Gliricidia sepium(Jacq.)(Leguminosae) against the malarial vector,Anopheles stephensi Liston(Culicidae:Diptera)

Objective:To investigate the potentiality of mosquitocidal activity of Gliricidia sepium（C.sepium）（Jacq.）（Leguminosae）.Methods:Twenty five early third instar larvae of Anopheles stephensi （An.stephensi） were exposed to various concentrations（50-250 ppm） and the 24 h LC50 values of the G.sepium extract was determined by probit analysis.The ovicidal activity was determined against An.stephensi to various concentrations ranging from 25-100 ppm under laboratory conditions.The eggs hatchabilily was assessed 48 h post treatment.The pupicidal activity was determined against An.stephensi to various concentrations ranging from 25-100 ppm.Mortality of each pupa was recorded after 24 h of exposure to the extract.Results:Results pertaining to the experiment clearly revealed that ethanol extract showed significant larvicidal,ovicidal and pupicidal activity against the An.stephensi.Larvicidal activity of ethanol extracts of G.sepium showed maximum mortality in 250 ppm concentration（96.0±2.4）%.Furthermore,the LC50 was found to be 121.79 and the LC50 value was recorded to be 231.98 ppm.Ovicidal activity of ethanol extract was assessed by assessing the egg hatchabilily.Highest concentration of both solvent extracts exhibited 100%ovicidal activity.Similarly,pupae exposed to different concentratioiLs of ethanol extract were found dead with 58.10%adult emergence when it was treated with 25 ppm concentration.Similarly,18.36（n=30;61.20%）;21.28（70.93） and 27.33（91.10） pupal mortality was recorded from the experimental pupae treated with 50,75 and 100 ppm concentration of extracts. Three fractions have been tested for their larvicidal activity of which the Fraction 3 showed the LC50 and LC90 values of 23.23 and 40.39 ppm.With regard to the ovicidal effect fraction 3 showed highest ovicidal activities than the other two fractions.Furthermore,there were no hatchabilily was recorded above 50 ppm（100%egg mortality） in the experimental group.Statistically significant pupicidal activity

Objective:To determine the larvicidal and pupicidal activites of Solanum trilobatum(S. trilobatum) leaf extracts against Aedes aegypti(Ae.aegypti),Culex quinquefasciatus(Cx. quinquefasciatus) and Anopheles stephensi(An.stephensi).Methods:The larvicidal and pupucidal was determined at five different concentrations of 50,100,150,200 and 250 ppm.Percentage of larval mortality was assessed after 48 h.Results:Methanol extracts of S.trilobatum was found to be more susceptible against the larvae of Ae.aegypti.Cx.quinquefasciatus and An.stephensi at 250 ppm with a LC_(50) value of 125.43,127.77 and 116.64 ppm respectively.Leaf methanol extracts of S.trilobatum also exhibited pupicidal and adult emergence properties.Conclusions:These results suggested that the leaf extracts of S.Irilobalum showed potential to be used as an ideal ecofriendly approach for the control of the Ae.Aegypti,Cx.quinquefasciatus and An.stephensi.

Objective:To formulate a simple rapid procedure for bioreduction of silver nanoparticles using aqueous leaves extract of Moringa oleifera(M.oleifera).Methods:10 mL of leaf extract was mixed to 90 mL of 1 mM aqueous of AgNO_3 and was heated at 60-80 ℃ for 20 min.A change from brown to reddish color was observed.Characterization using UV-Vis spectrophotometry, Transmission Electron Microscopy(TEM) was performed.Results:TEM showed the formation of silver nanoparticles with an average size of 57 nm.Conclusions:M.oleifera demonstrates strong potential for synthesis of silver nanoparticles by rapid reduction of silver ions(Ag^+ to Ag^0). Biological methods are good competents for the chemical procedures,which are eco-friendly and convenient.

Objective:To evaluate the antifeedant,insecticidal and growth inhibition activities of Solanum pseudocapsicum(S.pseudocapsicum)seed extracts against Spodoptera litura(S.litura)and Helicotverpa armigera(H.armigera).Methods:Hcxane,diethyl cther,dichloromethanc and ethyl acetate seed extracts were prepared and tested for autifeedant,insecticidal and growth inhibitory activities against fourth instar larvae of&litura and H.armigera.Results:Ethyl acetate extract showed promising antifeedant and insecticidal activities against S.litura and H.armigera.Percentage of deformed larvae,pupae and adults were maximum in treatment of ethyl acetate extract.Percentage of successful adult emergence was deteriorated by seeds on extract treated larvae.Conclusions:Ethyl acetate extracts of S.pseudocapsicum,showed higher efficiency of antifeedant,insecticidal and growth inhibition activities.Hence,it can be used to controll agricultural insect pests,S.litura and H.armigera.
