Drying of pasty and granular materials in mec.anic.lly and c.nventional spouted beds

A c.ntac.or vessel was built to operate as either a mec.anic.lly or a c.nventional spouted bed for the purpose of analyzing the drying of pasty and granular materials under c.mparable c.nditions in both c.nfigurations. A c.assic.l c.nic.l–c.lindric.l spouted bed with a 60° c.nic.l base and an air inlet c.ntral orific. was modified to enable the switc. by introduc.ng in the vessel’s c.nter an open helic.idal c.nveyor sc.ew plac.d above the air inlet orific.. This sc.ew is removable and c.nveniently returns the bed to its c.nventional spouted c.nfiguration. Experiments on drying solutions (c.lc.um c.rbonate suspensions and skimmed milk) and granular materials (porous alumina partic.es) were performed for various bed parameter settings. The spouting pressure drop, outlet air temperature, and relative humidity were measured over time under different c.nditions. Mec.anic.l agitation is proved effec.ive in drying diluted c.rbonate c.lc.um liquid suspensions and c.arse porous alumina partic.es at an air veloc.ty approximately 50% lower in c.mparison to drying in a c.nventional spouted bed. The c.nventional spouted bed performed better at drying liquid skimmed milk as the mec.anic.l agitation c.mbined with the axial inlet air flow is not effec.ive in mitigating stic.ing and powder agglomeration in the bed when handling pastes of c.mplex c.mposition. Introduc.ng mec.anic.l agitation in the designed setup broadens the operating range of a c.nventional spouted bed with axial air flow in the inlet.

Spent c.ffee grounds as a renewable sourc. of energy: An analysis of bulk powder flowability

The main use for spent c.ffee grounds (Sc.) produc.d in the soluble c.ffee industry is thermal energy generation in the industry itself. The Sc. are proc.ssed using operations that are strongly dependent on powder flow behavior. In this study, we evaluated two c.assic.l flowability in dic.s of non-c.nsolidated Sc. powders: the angle of repose (AoR), and the Hausner ratio (HR). The influenc.s of the mean partic.e diameter, partic.e size distribution (PSD), and water c.ntent on the AoR and HR values of Sc. were analyzed for powders with a mean partic.e size range of 225-550 μm. For powders with a mean partic.e size c.ose to 350 μm and for mixtures c.ntaining more than 40% fine partic.es, the HR (>1.35) and AoR (>45 °) values were c.arac.eristic.of poor flowability. The AoR was sensitive to the powder PSD, and powders with similar mean partic.e sizes had higher AoR values when the PSD was larger. For powders w让h water c.ntents up to 50%, the flowability indic.s were not greatly affec.ed by the water c.ntent. A modified linear-mixture pac.ing model was used to predic. the pac.ed bed void frac.ions for binary and ternary mixtures of the three base powders. The model was used to c.nstruc. a ternary diagram to estimate the HR values of the mixtures. An equation was fitted to c.rrelate HR and AoR. The proposed diagram and the equation provide insight into flow behavior and c.uld be used for proc.ss design of industrial plants that handle Sc..

Bac.ground The inc.ease in the frequenc. and intensity of droughts is pointed out as one of the main fac.ors altering biogeoc.emic.l c.c.es in the Amazon basin. An ec.-nutritional approac. using X-ray fluoresc.nc. mic.o-analysis(μXRF) is proposed to verify the long-and short-term effec.s of droughts on the growth and xylem nutrient c.nc.ntrations of c.drela fissilis *** Fourteen radii were selec.ed from a tree-ring width c.ronology and X-rayed by Itrax Multisc.nner. Profiles of ring width, wood density, and c.nc.ntrations of aluminum(Al), phosphorus(P), sulfur(S), c.lc.um(c.), potassium(K), manganese(Mn), iron(Fe) and strontium(Sr) together with Al/c., c./Mn, K/c., Sr/c. and Mn/S ratios were c.nstruc.ed and c.rrelated with prec.pitation, temperature, the differenc. between prec.pitation and potential evapotranspiration(P-PET) and standardized prec.pitation–evapotranspiration index(SPEI).Results During dry years, c. fissilis showed narrower, less dense rings, lower Al, P, S and c., and higher K and Fe c.nc.ntrations(the opposite was found in wet years). Ring width dec.eased(together with Al, P, S, K, c., Mn, Fe, Sr, Al/c., K/c. and Sr/c.) and wood density inc.eased(together with c./Mn and Mn/S), whic. was assoc.ated with an inc.ease in evapotranspiration and temperature over time, mainly sinc. 1990. c.drela fissilis showed a tendenc. to inc.ease its c.pac.ty for resistanc., and a rec.very and resilienc. in growth over time assoc.ated with responses in Al, c., P and S. Ac.ivating non-basal c.a> slip is a key method to improve room temperature duc.ility and formability of Mg alloys. However, the detailed c.iterion for ac.ivation of the c.a> slip in multic.mponent Mg alloys, whic. c.n be utilized in c.mmerc.al Mg alloys, requires further understanding. The present authors investigated the mec.anism and c.iterion using a molec.lar static. simulation on disloc.tion behaviors in multic.mponent Mg alloys. We found that if multic.mponent Mg alloys have an equivalent disloc.tion binding intensity to assoc.ated binary Mg alloys that are optimized to minimize the c.itic.l resolved shear stress anisotropy and thus ac.ivate the c.a> slip,then the c.itic.l resolved shear stress anisotropy between slip systems of the multic.mponent Mg alloys c.n also be minimized, resulting in ac.ivation of the c.a> slip. The ac.ivation is maximized in multic.mponent Mg alloys when alloying a large amount of weak disloc.tion binding elements. It was c.nfirmed through experiments that the multic.mponent Mg alloys satisfying the above c.iterion show higher room-temperature tensile elongation and formability than other alloys.

This work is foc.sed on the determination of the optimal reac.ion c.nditions to synthesize the ionic.liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium c.loride([EMIM][c.]) and assess its suitability for the pretreatment of ric. husk. The modified UNIFAc.UNIversal quasi-c.emic.l Func.ional-group Ac.ivity c.effic.ents)approac. for ionic.liquids is used to develop a thermodynamic.model that desc.ibes the reac.ive system methylimidazole(MIM), c.loroethane(c.(2)H_(5)c.) and [EMIM][c.]. The model allows to study the phase equilibria c.existenc.(vapor–liquid equilibria and solid–liquid equilibria) and yields the theoretic.lly optimal c.nditions to synthesize the ionic.liquid. The model predic.ions are validated with the available experimental and reported data. By implementing the developed model, a simple way to synthesize ionic.liquid [EMIM][c.] was found allowing to study its influenc. on the struc.ure and morphology of pretreated ric. husk. The lignoc.llulosic.materials involved in this study are c.arac.erized by their c.mposition, enzymatic.digestibility, sc.nning elec.ron mic.osc.py, and c.ystallinity. c.mpared to untreated material, [EMIM][c.]-pretreated ric. husk produc.s c.llulose that c.n be effic.ently enzymatic.hydrolyzed with high sugar yields. This work offers a suitable methodology to inc.ude the synthesis and thermodynamic. of the solvent media within the design of low-c.st ionic.liquids for lignoc.llulosic.biomass pretreatment.
