Prospective associations between joint categories of physical activity and insomnia symptoms with onset of poor mental health in a population-based cohort

Background:Physical inactivity and insomnia symptoms are independently associated with increased risk of depression and anxiety;however,few studies jointly examine these risk *** study aimed to prospectively examine the joint association of physical activity(PA)and insomnia symptoms with onset of poor mental health in ***:Participants from the 2013 to 2018 annnual waves of the Household Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia panel study who had good mental health(Mental Health Inventory-5>54)in 2013,and who completed at least 1 follow-up survey(2014-2018),were included(n=10,977).Poor mental health(Mental Health Inventory-5≤54)was assessed ***(2013)PA was classified as high/moderate/low,and insomnia symptoms(i.e.,trouble sleeping)were classified as no insomnia symptoms/insomnia symptoms,with 6 mutually exclusive PAinsomnia symptom groups *** of PA-insomnia symptom groups with onset of poor mental health were examined using discrete-time proportional-hazards logit-hazard ***:There were 2322 new cases of poor mental health(21.2%).Relative to the high PA/no insomnia symptoms group,there were higher odds(odds ratio and 95%confidence interval(95%CI))of poor mental health among the high PA/insomnia symptoms(OR=1.87,95%CI:1.57-2.23),moderate PA/insomnia symptoms(OR=1.93,95%CI:1.61-2.31),low PA/insomnia symptoms(OR=2.33,95%CI:1.96-2.78),and low PA/no insomnia symptoms(OR=1.14,95%CI:1.01-1.29)*** level of PA combined with insomnia symptoms was associated with increased odds of poor mental health,with the odds increasing as PA ***:The se findings highlight the potential benefit of interventions targeting both PA and insomnia symptoms for promoting mental health.

Associations between aerobic and muscle-strengthening physical activity,sleep duration,and risk of all-cause mortality:A prospective cohort study of 282,473 ***

Purpose:To examine the joint associations between meeting guidelines for physical activity(PA)and sleep duration and all-cause mortality risk among ***:Participants were adults(n=282,473)aged 18-84 years who participated in the 2004-2014 *** Health Interview *** status was ascertained using the National Death Index through December ***-reported PA(Active:meeting both aerobic(AER)and muscle-strengthening(MSA)guidelines,AER only(AER),MSA only(MSA),or not meeting either AER or MSA(Inactive))and sleep duration(Short,recommended(Rec),or Long)were classified according to guidelines,and 12 PA-sleep categories were *** hazard ratios and 95%confidence intervals(95%CIs)for all-cause mortality risk were estimated using Cox proportional hazards regression ***:A total of 282,473 participants(55%females)were included;18,793 deaths(6.7%)occurred over an average follow-up of 5.4 *** to the Active-Rec group,all other PA-sleep groups were associated with increased mortality risk except for the Active-Short group(hazard ratio=1.08;95%CI:0.92-1.26).The combination of long sleep with either MSA or Inactive appeared to be *** a given sleep duration,mortality risk progressively increased among participants classified as AER,MSA,and *** each activity level,the mortality risk was greatest among adults with long ***:Relative to adults meeting guidelines for both PA and sleep duration,adults who failed to meet guidelines for both AER and muscle strengthening PA and who also failed to meet sleep duration guidelines had elevated all-cause mortality *** results support interventions targeting both PA and sleep duration to reduce mortality risk.

Objective To determine the prevalence and associations of general practice registrars’performing absolute cardio-vascular risk(ACVR)assessment(ACVRa).Design A cross-sectional study employing data(2017–2018)from the Registrar Clinical Encounters in Training project,an ongoing inception cohort study of Australian gP *** outcome measure was whether an ACVRa was *** employed univariable and multivariable *** was conducted for all patient problems/diagnoses,then for an‘at-risk’population(specific problems/diagnoses for which ACVRa is indicated).Setting Three gP regional training organisations(RTOs)across three Australian *** gP registrars training within participating *** 1003 registrars(response rate 96.8%)recorded details of 69105 problems either with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait patients aged 35 years and older or with non-Indigenous patients aged 45 years and *** these problems/diagnoses,1721(2.5%(95%CI 2.4%to 2.6%))involved an *** ACVRa was‘plausibly indicated’in 10384 problems/*** these,1228(11.8%(95%CI 11.2%to 12.4%))involved ***‘all problems/diagnoses’,on multivariable analysis female gender was associated with reduced odds of ACVRa(OR 0.61(95%CI 0.54 to 0.68)).There was some evidence for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people being more likely to receive ACVRa(OR 1.40(95%CI 0.94 to 2.08),p=0.10).There were associations with variables related to continuity of care,with reduced odds of ACVRa:if the patient was new to the registrar(OR 0.65(95%CI 0.57 to 0.75)),new to the practice(OR 0.24(95%CI 0.15 to 0.38))or the problem was new(OR 0.68(95%CI 0.59 to 0.78));and increased odds if personal follow-up was organised(OR 1.43(95%CI 1.24 to 1.66)).For‘ACVRa indicated’problems/diagnoses,findings were similar to those for‘all problems/diagnoses’.Association with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander status,however,was significant at p<0.05(OR 1.60(95%CI 1.04 to 2.46))a

The effectiveness of eyespots and masquerade in protecting artificial prey across ontogenetic and seasonal shifts

When constraints on antipredator coloration shift over the course of development,it can be advantageous for animals to adopt different color strategies for each life *** caterpillars in the genus Papilio exhibit unique ontogenetic color sequences:for example,early instars that masquerade as bird feces,with later instars possessing eyespots.I hypothesize that larvae abandon feces masquerade in favor of eyespots due to ontogenetic changes in signaler *** ontogenetic pattern also occurs within broader seasonal shifts in background color and predator activity.I conducted predation experiments with artificial prey to determine how potential signaling constraints(specifically size and season)shape predation risk,and consequently the expression of ontogenetic color change in Papilio ***,both predation and background greenness declined significantly from July to September,though there was little evidence that these patterns impacted the effectiveness of either color *** size and color strongly affected the attack rate of avian predators:attacks increased with prey size regardless of color,and eyespotted prey were attacked more than masquerading prey *** results may reflect a key size-mediated tradeoff between conspicuousness and intimidation in eyespotted prey,and raise questions about how interwoven aspects of behavior and signal environment might maintain the prevalence of large,eyespotted larvae in nature.

Fuzzy control of electro-mechanical gearbox actuator

In this paper, a prototype direct-drive electro-mechanical actuator is proposed to select gears in a high performance gearbox. Because of the nonlinear behavior of the actuator, a fuzzy logic controller is adopted. The result of simulation has proved that the dynamic response obtained using the fuzzy controller is much faster than that obtained using traditional PD controller.

Combined estimation of state and feed-back gain for optimal load frequency control is *** frequency control(LFC)addresses the problem of controlling system frequency in response to disturbance,and is one of main research areas in power system operation.A well acknowledged solution to this problem is feedback stabilization,where the Linear Quadratic Regulator(LQR)based controller computes the feedback gain K from the known system parameters and implements the control,assuming the availability of all the state ***,this approach restricts control to cases where the state variables are readily available and the system parameters are ***,by estimating the states continuously from available measurements of some of the states,it can accommodate dynamic changes in the system *** paper proposes the technique of augmenting the state variables with controller *** introduces a non-linearity to the augmented system and thereby the estimation is performed using an Extended Kalman *** results in producing controller gains that are capable of controlling the system in response to changes in load demand,system parameter variation and measurement noise.

Airborne bacteria associated with particulate matter from a highly urbanised metropolis:A potential risk to the population’s health

Bacteria in the air present patterns in space and time produced by different sources and environmental *** studies have focused on the link between airborne pathogenic bacteria in densely populated cities,and the risk to the population’s *** associated with particulate matter(PM)were monitored from the air of Mexico City(Mexico).We employed a metagenomic approach to characterise bacteria using the 16S rRNA *** bacteria sampling was carried out in the north,centre,and south of Mexico City,with different urbanisation rates,during *** added to the particles were sampled using high-volume PM_(10) *** ascertain significant differences in bacterial diversity between zones and seasons,the Kruskal-Wallis,Wilcoxon tests were done on alpha diversity ***-three air samples were collected,and DNA was sequenced using next-generation *** results indicated that the bacterial phyla in the north and south of the city were Firmicutes,Cyanobacteria,Proteobacteria,and Actinobacteria,while in the central zone there were more *** were no differences in the alpha diversity indices between the sampled *** to the OTUs,the richness of bacteria was higher in the central *** diversity was higher in the rainy season than in the dry season;the Shannon index and the OTUs observed were higher in the central zone in the dry *** bacteria such as Kocuria,Paracoccus,and Micrococcus predominated in both seasonal times,while Staphylococcus,Corynebacterium,and Nocardioides were found during the rainy season,with a presence in the central zone.

ELECTROACTIVE AND NANOSTRUCTURED POLYMERS AS SCAFFOLD MATERIALS FOR NEURONAL AND CARDIAC TISSUE ENgINEERINg

Conducting polymer, polyaniline （PANI）, has been studied as a novel electroactive and electrically conductive material for tissue engineering applications. The biocompatibility of the conductive polymer can be improved by （i） covalently grafting various adhesive peptides onto the surface of prefabricated conducting polymer films or into the polymer structures during the synthesis, （ii） co-electrospinning or blending with natural proteins to form conducting nanofibers or films, and （iii） preparing conducting polymers using biopolymers, such as collagen, as templates. In this paper, we mainly describe and review the approaches of covalently attaching oligopeptides to PANI and electrospinning PANI-gelatin blend nanofibers. The employment of such modified conducting polymers as substrates for enhanced cell attachment, proliferation and differentiation has been investigated with neuronal PC-12 cells and H9c2 cardiac myoblasts. For the electrospun PANI- gelatin fibers, depending on the concentrations of PANI, H9c2 cells initially displayed different morphologies on the fibrous substrates, but after one week all cultures reached confluence of similar densities and morphologies. Furthermore, we observed, that conductive PANI, when maintained in an aqueous physiologic environment, retained a significant level of electrical conductivity for at least 100 h, even though this conductivity was decreasing over time. Preliminary data show that the application of micro-current stimulates the differentiation of PC-12 cells. All the results demonstrate the potential for using PANI as an electroactive polymer in the culture of excitable cells and open the possibility of using this material as an electroactive scaffold for cardiac and/or neuronal tissue engineering applications that require biocompatibility of conductive polymers.
