Bimanual microincision cataract surgery with implantation of the new Incise~? MJ14 intraocular lens through a 1.4 mm incision

AIM：To analyze the visual outcomes and the posterior capsule opacification（PCO）with the new Incise？MJ14intraocular lens（IOL）implanted through a 1.4 mm clear corneal incision（CCI）in patients who underwent bimanual microincision cataract surgery（B-MICS）.METHODS：Eighty eyes which underwent cataract surgery using B-MICS technique performed by the same experienced surgeon were included in the study：40 eyes were implanted with an Incise？MJ14 IOL through a 1.4 mm CCI（group A）without enlargement of the main CCI,while 40 eyes were implanted with an Akreos？MI60 IOL with enlargement of the main CCI to 1.8 mm（group B）.Best corrected visual acuity（BCVA）,astigmatism and endothelial cell loss were evaluated before and after surgery at 7,30d and *** segment-optical coherence tomography（AS-OCT）of CCI was performed at 1,3,7,30d,6 and *** incidence was evaluated at 18mo using EPCO 2000 ***：Mean BCVA improvement and endothelial cell loss were statistically significant at 18mo in both groups with no difference between the two groups;no statistically significant difference in surgically induced astigmatism（SIA）was noticed in the two *** AS-OCT the only significant alterations in the CCI were endothelial gaping and local detachment of descemet’s membrane at 1 and 7d after surgery;no statistically significant alterations were found at 1,6 and *** score at 18mo was 0.03±0.07for group A and 0.08±0.18 for group B（P=0.11）with no sign of central optic plate invasion in both ***：The implant of the new Incise？MJ14 IOL through a 1.4 mm CCI and B-MICS technique appeared to be a safe and effective procedure with rapid visual *** rate resulted very low and the CCI presented few morphological alterations which were only detectable in the first days postoperatively and achieved fast corneal healing during the long-term follow-up.

FunMod: A Cytoscape Plugin for Identifying Functional Modules in Undirected Protein–Protein Networks

The characterization of the interacting behaviors of complex biological systems is a primary objective in protein–protein network analysis and computational biology. In this paper we present FunMod, an innovative Cytoscape version 2.8 plugin that is able to mine undirected protein–protein networks and to infer sub-networks of interacting proteins intimately correlated with relevant biological pathways. This plugin may enable the discovery of new pathways involved in diseases. In order to describe the role of each protein within the relevant biological pathways, FunMod computes and scores three topological features of the identified sub-networks. By integrating the results from biological pathway clustering and topological network analysis, FunMod proved to be useful for the data interpretation and the generation of new hypotheses in two case studies.

Intermittent Pneumatic Compression (IPC) devices can be used to analyze the mechanisms underlying several vascular phenomena, such as hyperaemia. Commercial devices have limited dynamics and do not allow the delivery of customizable compressive pressure patterns, making the analysis of such phenomena difficult, which may require the application of long stimulations with low amplitude as well as fast compressions with higher pressure level. To overcome these issues, a novel pneumotronic device aimed to the investigation of the physiological effects induced by limb compressions is conceived and presented in this work. The design requirements of the system, capable of delivering customizable compressive patterns in the range 0 mmHg-200 mmHg, are outlined. The final prototype architecture is described, and a mathematical model of the entire system, also including the interaction between the device and the limb tissues, is proposed. The performance of the device was evaluated in several conditions by means of simulations, whose results were compared to the data collected from experimental trials in order to validate the model. The outcomes of both experimentation and simulation trials proved the effectiveness of the solution proposed. A possible employment of this device for the investigation of the rapid compression-induced hyperaemia is presented. Other potential applications concern the wide range of intermittent-pneumatic compression treatments.

Oncological treatment is currently directed toward a tailored therapy *** cell carcinoma of the anal canal could be considered a suitable platform to test new therapeutic strategies to minimize treatment *** of care for patients with anal canal cancer consists of a combination of radiotherapy and *** treatment has led to a high rate of local control and a 60% cure rate with preservation of the anal sphincter,thus replacing surgical abdominoperineal *** node metastases represent a critical independent prognostic factor for local recurrence and *** and iliac lymph nodes are usually included in the radiation field,whereas the inclusion of inguinal regions still remains controversial because of the subsequent adverse side *** lymph node biopsies could clearly identify inguinal node-positive patients eligible for therapeutic groin irradiation.A sentinel lymph node navigation procedure is reported here to be a feasible and effective method for establishing the true inguinal node status in patients suffering from anal canal *** on the results of sentinel node biopsies,a selective approach could be proposed where node-positive patients could be selected for inguinal node irradiation while node-negative patients could take advantage of inguinal sparing irradiation,thus avoiding toxic side effects.

The relationship between diabetes mellitus and Parkinson's disease has been described in several epidemiological studies over the 1960 s to *** studies have shown the possible functional link between insulin and dopamine,as there is strong evidence demonstrating the action of dopamine in pancreatic islets,as well as the insulin effects on feeding and cognition through central nervous system mechanism,largely independent of glucose *** used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus appear to be promising candidates for symptomatic and/or disease-modifying action in neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson's disease,while an old dopamine agonist,bromocriptine,has been repositioned for the type 2 diabetes mellitus *** review will aim at reappraising the different studies that have highlighted the dangerous liaisons between diabetes mellitus and Parkinson's disease.
