Microbial Community with Potential for Metal Release Isolated from Palca Mine Tailings Pond in Peru

The improvement of microbial characterization has increased the comprehension of microbial population and their ability in the microbiological metal dissolution. Bioleaching processes have been expanded to use microorganisms for the recovery of metals from ores and wastes. This study introduces Palca mine tailings pond in Peru which turned into acid mine drainage (AMD). AMD is a source of microbial communities whose microorganisms may support the aqueous extractive metallurgy for metal recovery. Four samples of AMD were collected from different locations and the elemental characterization showed concentrations of metals, such as Cu, Zn, Al, Mn, and Fe. The pH of the samples showed variation between 1.9 - 6.8. Twenty-one microorganisms were isolated and selected according the cell morphology. 16s rRNA gene sequences identified five species of which three belong to the bacterial kingdom and two to the Fungi kingdom. Two of the bacterial species were ferrous ion oxidizing bacteria, identified as Acidithiobacillus ferriphilus and Acidithiobacillus ferridurans;and the other one a ferric ion reducing bacteria identified as Acidiphilium acidophilum. The fungi species identified were Rhodotorula sinensis and Exophiala xenobiotica, a filamentous fungus isolated for the first time from an AMD.

Introduction: The cicatricial acceleration method (MAC®) promotes photobiological effects of an anti-inflammatory and healing nature. Its therapeutic radiation is emitted, producing photobiostimulant effects that result in rapid tissue repair and better tissue quality. The treatment of burns has always been a challenge, which involves both performing surgery and controlling and guiding scar regeneration, avoiding possible morbidities. Objective: To evaluate the effects of applying the MAC methodology with an AlGa (aluminum, gallium arsenide) laser on the time and quality of tissue repair in the skin of rats after induced chemical burns. Method: 22 adult male rats were subjected to a second-degree chemical burn on the back using 50% trichloroacetic acid. After the burns, the animals were randomly separated into 2 groups: control and experimental. The control group (G1) received placebo laser therapy and the laser group (G2) underwent laser irradiation with an energy density of 100 J/cm2. Histological analysis and macroscopic evaluation were carried out by means of the paper template method. Results: Group G1 showed (53%) of the necrosis area and group G2 showed (11%) necrosis area. Conclusion: The cicatricial acceleration method (MAC®) favored the repair of wounds caused by a 2nd-degree chemical burn, optimizing time and improving quality.

Piezoelectric constant temperature dependence in strained [111]-oriented zinc-blende MQW-SOAs

Here,we present a study of the effective piezoelectric constant(e_(14_(e)))temperature dependence in strained[111]-oriented zinc-blende quantum wells(QWs)embedded within a semiconductor optical amplifier(SOA).We determined e_(14_(e)) using a method that was insensitive to the segregation phenomenon and to the temperature dependence of the bandgap energy,which required neither fitting parameters nor temperature-dependent expressions for energy and out-of-plane effective masses of electrons and heavy *** e_(14_(e))=−0.0534±0.0040 C·m^(−2) at 23°C was obtained for an SOA with 1.2 nm[111]-oriented strained In0.687Ga0.313As/In0.807Ga0.193As0.304P0.696 *** previously published research,where e_(14_(e)) magnitude increased as temperature rised,we extracted an e_(14_(e)) magnitude that decreased as temperature increased.

Structural performance assessment of GFRP elastic gridshells by machine learning interpretability methods

The prediction of structural performance plays a significant role in damage assessment of glass fiber reinforcement polymer(GFRP)elastic gridshell *** learning(ML)approaches are implemented in this study,to predict maximum stress and displacement of GFRP elastic gridshell *** ML algorithms,including linear regression(LR),ridge regression(RR),support vector regression(SVR),K-nearest neighbors(KNN),decision tree(DT),random forest(RF),adaptive boosting(AdaBoost),extreme gradient boosting(XGBoost),category boosting(CatBoost),and light gradient boosting machine(LightGBM),are implemented in this *** features of structural performance considered in this study are the maximum stress as f1(x)and the maximum displacement to self-weight ratio as f2(x).A comparative study is conducted and the Catboost model presents the highest prediction ***,interpretable ML approaches,including shapely additive explanations(SHAP),partial dependence plot(PDP),and accumulated local effects(ALE),are applied to explain the *** is employed to describe the importance of each variable to structural performance both locally and *** results of sensitivity analysis(SA),feature importance of the CatBoost model and SHAP approach indicate the same parameters as the most significant variables for f1(x)and f2(x).

Challenges in managing hepatitis C virus infection in cancer patients

Cancer patients have unique problems associated with hepatitis C virus(HCV)infection and treatment not seen in the general *** infection poses additional challenges and considerations for the management of cancer,and vice *** infection also can lead to the development of cancer,particularly hepatocellular carcinoma and non-Hodgkin *** severely immunocompromised cancer patients,diagnosis of HCV infection requires increased reliance on RNA detection *** infection can affect chemotherapy,and delay of HCV infection treatment until completion of chemotherapy and achievement of cancer remission may be required to decrease the potential for drug-drug interactions between antineoplastic agents and HCV therapeutics and potentiation of side effects of these *** addition,hematopoietic stem cell transplant(HSCT)recipients have an increased risk of early development of cirrhosis and *** this increased risk applies to all patients regardless of cancer treatment is ***,patients with cancer may have poorer sustained virological responses to HCV infection treatment than do those without ***,not all cancer patients are candidates for HCV infection *** this article,we review the challenges in managing HCV infection in cancer patients and HSCT recipients.

Renal elimination of organic anions in cholestasis

The disposition of most drugs is highly dependent on specialized transporters. OAT1 and OAT3 are two organic anion transporters expressed in the basolateral membrane of renal proximal tubule cells, identified as contributors to xenobiotic and endogenous organic anion secretion. It is well known that cholestasis may cause renal damage. Impairment of kidney function produces modifications in the renal elimination of drugs. Recent studies have demonstrated that the renal abundance of OAT1 and OAT3 plays an important role in the renal elimination of organic anions in the presence of extrahepatic cholestasis. Time elapsed after obstructive cholestasis has an important impact on the regulation of both types of organic anion transporters. The renal expression of OAT1 and OAT3 should be taken into account in order to improve pharmacotherapeutic efficacy and to prevent drug toxicity during the onset of this hepatic disease.

In this note, we study a discrete time approximation for the solution of a class of delayed stochastic differential equations driven by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H ∈(1/2,1). In order to prove convergence, we use rough paths techniques. Theoretical bounds are established and numerical simulations are displayed.

Use of two-surfactants mixtures to attain specific HLB values for assisted TPH-diesel biodegradation

In a surfactant assisted biodegradation process, the choice of surfactant(s) is of crucial importance. The question is: does the type of surfactant(i.e. chemical family) affect the biodegradation process at fixed hidrophillic-lypofillic balance(HLB) values? Microcosm assessments were developed using contaminated soil, with around of 5000 mg/kg of hydrocarbons as TPH-diesel. Mixtures of three nonionic surfactants were employed to get a wide range of specific HLB values. Tween20 and Span20 were mixed in the appropriate proportions to get HLB values between 8.6 and 16.7. Tween/Span60 mixtures reached HLB values between 4.7 and 14.9. Finally, Tween/Span80 combinations yielded HLB values between 4.3 and 15. TPH-diesel biodegradation was measured at the beginning, and after 8 weeks, as well as the FCU/gr soil, as a measure of microorganisms′ development during the biodegradation period. A second aim of this work was to assess the use of guar gum as a biodegradation enhancer instead of synthetic products. The conclusions of this work are that surfactant chemical family, and not only the HLB value clearly affects the assisted biodegradation rate. Surfactant's synergism was clearly observed. Regarding the use of guar gum, no biodegradation enhancement was observed for the three assessed concentrations, i.e., 2, 20, and 200 mg/kg, respectively. On the contrary, TPH-diesel removal was lower as the gum concentration increased. It is quite possible that guar gum was used as a microbial substrate.

Risk Transfer for Populations in Precarious Urban Environments

This study explores risk transfer options that precarious and marginal urban communities could use to protect themselves from future damages and losses generated by socio-natural hazards and disasters at the individual and community levels. The design is framed within an evidence-based disaster risk reduction(DRR) strategy and follows the case study research approach. We analyze the2018 Neighborhood Approach for DRR programming evaluation carried out in four Latin American cities’ informal settlements and review relevant risk transfer experiences aimed at vulnerable populations. We calculate the pure risk premium for the four cases selected, using a previous catastrophe risk assessment for earthquakes and landslides. We propose three risk transfer options based on our analysis:(1) voluntary collective insurance;(2) structural reinforcement with a comprehensive housing insurance;and(3) hybrid parametric insurance. Risk transfer mechanisms conventionally focus on residual risk management. Here, due to the precariousness of the analyzed urban settings, the proposed alternatives go beyond the management of just residual risk to positively impact the beneficiaries’ quality of life and the reduction of the built environment’s physical vulnerability in the short and medium terms. Our study proposes a prospective estimation of future risk despite the limitations of data availability. This study opens a window to new approaches and proposes a systematic process to design DRR policy aimed at the poor and vulnerable strata of society.

Investigation of low grade thermal energy storage systems with phase changing materials

The use of phase changing materials(PCMs)for energy storage has been in the focus of scientific research for a while,primarily focusing on building cooling/heating applications due to favourable melting temperature *** this paper we simulated the suitability of encapsulated Paraffin Wax on a small scale in a low temperature thermal energy storage system using COMSOL *** absorption and heating dynamics were analysed for different inlet designs and velocities,and the thermal gradient was evaluated across the tank geometry in a number of charging *** show that paraffin wax proves to be a good storage medium based on its fast charging and good latent heat *** study found that although an addition of a second inlet to the system yields higher final temperatures and improves the heat transfer rate,it does so minimally and therefore is not notably *** designs follow the same heating dynamics independently on the final ***,higher or lower velocities benefit the system based on the design.
