AIM:To assess the impact of bacterial infections on cancer-specific survival in patients with colorectal cancer. METHODS:This was a retrospective cohort study of colorectal cancer patients treated at the A.C. Camargo Cancer Center between January 2006 and April 2010. The presence of bacterial infection during cancer treatment,or up to one year after,was confirmed by laboratory tests or by the physician. Infections of the urinary,respiratory or digestive tracts,bloodstream,skin or surgical site were defined by testing within a single laboratory. Criteria for exclusion from the study were:chronically immunosuppressed patients;transplant patients(due to chronic immunosuppression);human immunodeficiency virus carriers;chronic use of corticosteroids or other immunosuppressive drugs;patients with autoimmune disease or primary immunodeficiency;known viral or parasitic infections. Patients with infections that did not require hospitalization were not included in the study because of the difficulty of collecting and tracking data related to infectious processes. In addition,patients hospitalized for pulmonary thromboembolism,stroke,acute myocardial infarction,uncontrolled diabetes,malignant hypercalcemia or other serious non-infectious complications not directly related to infection were also excluded. Survival curves were plotted using the Kaplan-Meier method,and logrank tests(univariate analysis) and a Cox test assuming a proportional hazards model(multivariate analysis) were performed to examine associations between clinical history and characteristics of infection with cancer-specific survival. RESULTS:One-hundred and six patients with colorectal cancer were divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of bacterial infection. Patient ages ranged from 23 to 91 years,with a median of 55 years. The majority of patients were male(57/106,53.77%) with stage Ⅲ colorectal cancer(45/106,44.11%). BACKGROUND Acute decompensation(AD)of cirrhosis is related to systemic inflammation and elevated circulating *** this context,biomarkers of inflammation,such as calprotectin,may be of prognostic *** To evaluate serum calprotectin levels in patients hospitalized for complications of *** This is a prospective cohort study that included 200 subjects hospitalized for complications of cirrhosis,20 outpatients with stable cirrhosis,and 20 healthy *** calprotectin was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbant *** Calprotectin levels were higher among groups with cirrhosis when compared to healthy *** median calprotectin was related to Child-Pugh C,ascites,and hepatic *** calprotectin was related to acute-on-chronic liver failure(ACLF)and infection in the bivariate,but not in multivariate *** was not associated with survival among patients with ACLF;however,in patients with AD without ACLF,higher calprotectin was associated with a lower 30-d survival,even after adjustment for chronic liver failure-consortium(CLIF-C)AD score.A high-risk group(CLIF-C AD score≥60 and calprotectin≥580 ng/mL)was identified,which had a 30-d survival(27.3%)similar to that of patients with grade 3 ACLF(23.3%).CONCLUSION Serum calprotectin is associated with prognosis in patients with AD without ACLF and may be useful in clinical practice to early identify patients with a very low short-term survival.

This study describes the anatomy of sterile leaves of Elaphoglossum discolor (Kuhn) C. Chr., E. flaccidum (Fée) T. Moore and E. laminarioides (Bory ex Fée) T. Moore, the most representative species of the genus in the Ecological Park of Gunma in Pará State. It reports the main diagnostic characters and provides new systematic data for the group. In addition, it locates the production and accumulation sites of bioactive compounds to determine possible adaptive strategies of these species in the Amazon rainforest environment. Diagnostic structural features include stoma typology, central veins and margin forms, type of mesophyll, and the presence of schlerenchymatous sheaths in the cortex, among others. Among the bioactive compounds related to defense adaptation are phenolic compounds, which occur in all three species, and alkaloids and mucilage, which are exclusive to E. laminarioides. Of the three species studied, E. laminarioides has features that make it the best suited to the rainforest environment.

The aim of this study was to evaluate morphometric and hematological parameters of juveniles Piracanjubas treated with two distinct photoperiod. Twenty nine fish with 100 g, in a factorial design were performed in 18 h light：6 h dark （18L：6D） and 6L：lSD two different photoperiod, and morphometric and hematological parameters were evaluated at 45 d and 90 d after photoperiod treatment. Benzocaine 1% was used for euthanasia. Fish were weighed and measured, so as visceral fat, liver and gonads. Hematocrit, total count of white cells, lymphocytes and neutrophils were counted. Results showed that there was no significant relationship between bodyweight and standard length. Significant interaction （P = 0.00018） had been found between the fat index （FI） and gonado-somatic index （GSI） and the photoperiod and time. At 90 d, the fish kept in 18L：6D had a lower rate of fat than the fish kept in 6L：18D （P 〈 0.05）. The GSI was higher in the group 6L.＇18D compared with the 18L：6D （P 〈 0.005）. There was no interaction between photoperiod and period of treatment for total leukocyte count, however with 90 d, the total leukocyte count was decreased （P 〈 0.05）. Moreover, decrease of the hematocrit from 58.1% to 46.9% and an increase of lymphocytes from 31.5% to 43.5% had been found in fish kept in 18L：6D after 90 d （P 〈 0.05）. Fish kept in 6L：ISD presented an increase in segmented neutrophils and lymphocytes （P 〈 0.05）. It is concluded that photoperiod maintained at 6L： 18D for Piracanjubas permits a greater gonadal development and an amount of immune cells over the photoperiod maintained in 18L： 6D.

The platelet indices Mean Platelet Volume (MPV), Platelet Distribution Width (PDW) and Plate-letcrit (PCT) provided by automated hematology analysis are rarely used in clinical practice. Platelets play a central role in the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and high MPV has been associated to more reactive platelets and regarded as an independent risk factor for myocardial infarction. In this study, platelet indices were evaluated in 39 patients with ACS presenting two altered biochemical parameters, C reactive protein (CRP) and creatine kinase fraction MB (CK-MB). The results obtained showed significantly higher MPV and PDW values in the group with ACS in comparison to the control group. Also observed was a weak but significant positive correlation between MPV and CK-MB. In view of findings of previous studies, which have associated macroplatelets with higher thrombotic potential our results suggest that the use of the MPV and PDW indices as additional and complementary markers may contribute to the investigation and follow-up of thrombotic risk in patients with ACS.

Since ancient times, the physiological processes of the human body have been studied in a constant search for understanding always seeking the treatment of possible malfunctions. For Freud, the disease took a different meaning since language is the bridge between the unconscious and the symptom. The bus drivers job requires a balance between the body and the psyche. Interventions are needed to ensure the care of them. The role of psychology to meet the bus driver goes beyond the technical processes. Listening is a way of signifying the condition suffered by the subject as the psychologist is convened to hear beyond recruitment and selection, and a translator of the unconscious or the symptom means. The consideration of Freudian psycho analysis says about the guy who is immersed in the process of speech, his/her body also has its own language. And from this premise, this paper aims to analyze the current condition of the road professional regarding the symptoms and psychological state, relate to contemporary reality considering documentary analysis of the organization and the methodology used is descriptive research.
