Sex estimation in a Turkish population using Purkait’s triangle:a virtual approach by 3-dimensional computed tomography(3D-CT)

Sex estimation is considered one of the first steps in the forensic identification *** and morphometrical differences between males and females have been used as means for morphoscopic and metric methods on both cranial and postcranial skeletal *** dry skeletal elements are not available,virtual data can be used as a *** present research explores 3-dimensional(3D)scans from a Turkish population to test a sex estimation method developed by Purkait(2005).Overall,296 individuals were used in this study(158 males and 138 females).Purkait’s triangle parameters were measured on computed tomography(CT)scans obtained from both right and left femora of each patient at the Bakirkoy *** Konuk Training Research Hospital(Istanbul,Turkey).Intra-and inter-observer errors were assessed for all variables through technical error of measurements *** asymmetry and sex differences were evaluated using parametric and non-parametric statistical *** and multivariate discriminant function analyses were then *** errors demonstrated an overall agreement within and between experts,as indicated by technical error of measurement(TEM)*** bilateral asymmetries were reported,and all parameters demonstrated a statistically significant difference between males and *** discriminant models were generated by applying single and combined parameters,producing a total correct sex classification ranging from 78.4%to 92.6%.In addition,over 67%of the total sample was accurately classified,with 95%or greater posterior *** study demonstrates the feasibility of 3D sex estimation using Purkait’s triangle on a Turkish population,with accuracy rates comparable to those reported in other *** is the first attempt to apply this method on virtual data and although further validation and standardisation are recommended for its application on dry bone,this research constitutes a signif

Metallographic Characterization of the Microstructure of Tool Steels

Examination of selectively etched tool steel microstructures by light microscopy provides more information than standard etchants, such as nital, picral or Vilella’s reagent. further, the images are more suitable for quantitative measurements, especially by image analysis. Specimens must be properly prepared, damage free, if selective etchants are to be applied successfully. A number of etchants have been claimed to selectively etch certain carbides in tool steels. The response of these etchants has been evaluated using a variety of well-characterized tool steel compositions. While many are selective, they are often selective to more than one type of carbide. furthermore, their use in image analysis must be evaluated carefully as measurements showed that the amount and size of the carbides are often greater after selective etching as many of these reagents outline and color or attack the carbides. Selective etching of the matrix, leaving the carbides unaffected works well, but no one etchant will cover the broad spectrum of tool steel compositions. No etchant has been found that will color retained austenite in tool steels and image analysis of retained austenite in tool steels are always much lower than by x-ray diffraction unless retained austenite is the dominant phase present in grossly over-austenitized steels.

Synthesis of Al2O3-SiO2-MgO ceramics with hierarchical porous structure

Long-term trends in solar activity. Variations of solar indices in the last 40 years

We analyze long-term variations of several solar activity indices(AIs) that have been measured over the last 40 *** this goal,we study the AIs that characterize the fluxes from different areas in the solar *** consideration of mutual correlations between the solar indices is based on the study of relationships between them in the period from 1950 to *** period of time,covering activity cycles 19–22,is characterized by relatively stable relations between the *** investigate the normalized variations of these indices in recent time in relation to their values which were calculated by considering radiation from the Sun in the radio range at a wavelength of 10.7 cm(f10.7) in 1950–*** analysis of time series,representing variations of the normalized AI(AIff) in solar cycles 23–24,shows different trends exist for different indices in terms of their long-term *** assume that variations of normalized International Sunspot Number(SSN),f530.3 and flare Index,which have shown sharp decreases in the last 40 years,are possibly associated with a decrease in the intensity of large-scale magnetic fields in the photosphere(SSN) and in the corona(the coronal index and the flare Index).

Cellular automata model for traffic flow with safe driving conditions

In this paper, a recently introduced cellular automata （CA） model is used for a statistical analysis of the inner micro-scopic structure of synchronized traffic flow. The analysis focuses on the formation and dissolution of clusters or platoons of vehicles, as the mechanism that causes the presence of this synchronized traffic state with a high flow. This platoon formation is one of the most interesting phenomena observed in traffic flows and plays an important role both in manual and automated highway systems （AHS）. Simulation results, obtained from a single-lane system under periodic boundary conditions indicate that in the density region where the synchronized state is observed, most vehicles travel together in pla- toons with approximately the same speed and small spatial distances. The examination of velocity variations and individual vehicle gaps shows that the flow corresponding to the synchronized state is stable, safe and highly correlated. Moreover, results indicate that the observed platoon formation in real traffic is reproduced in simulations by the relation between vehicle headway and velocity that is embedded in the dynamics definition of the CA model.
