The objective of this study was to determine the sample size needed to evaluate characters of mature fruits of yellow mombin (Spondias mombin L.). 100 fruits were evaluated from plants grown under a shading system. In the laboratory, these fruits were measured by the characters: longitudinal length (mm);equatorial diameter (mm);fruit mass (g);yield of pulp (%);total soluble solids—TSS (°Brix);titratable acidity—TA (% citric acid) and ratio (TSS/TA), being calculated the measures of central tendency and dispersion, and verified normality. Next, the sample size for each character was determined. For experimental evaluation of cajámirim fruits, considering an accuracy of 10% around the mean, 40 fruits per treatment should be evaluated, considering a completely randomized experiment.

The leaf has a vital role in the functions of the plant, being responsible for photosynthesis and gas exchange. Thus, the objective of this study was to fit a mathematical equation model to estimate the leaf area of Maytenus obtusifolia Mart. through the linear dimensions of the leaves. For that, six hundred and fifteen healthy leaves were collected from plants belonging to the Federal University of Espírito Santo, São Mateus Campus, in the municipality of São Mateus, located in the north of the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil. All leaves were digitized and the images processed using the ImageJ®software, obtaining the measurements of the maximum length of the main midrib (L), the maximum width of the leaf blade (W) and the real leaf area (RLA) of each sheet. Subsequently, the product of length and width multiplication (LW) was also obtained. 500 sheets were randomly separated for the generation of models of mathematical equations and their respective coefficient of determination (R2), where RLA was used as dependent variable as function of L, W or LW as independent variable. Based on the models generated, a 115 leaf sample was used for validation, where the L, W and LW values of this sample were replaced in the adjusted equations, thus obtaining the estimated leaf area (ELA). A comparison of the means of RLA and ELA was performed by Student’s t test at 5% probability. We also calculated the mean absolute error (MAE), the root mean square error (RMSE) and the Willmott index (d). The best equation was defined by the following criteria: non-significant values of RLA and ELA averages, R2 and index d closest to unit, and MAE and RMSE values with greater proximity to zero. The quadratic model equation represented by ELA=0.18122798+0.72847767(LW)+0.00002789(LW)2 generated by multiplying the length with the width (LW) is the most suitable for the estimation of the leaf area of Maytenus obtusifolia Mart., in a fast, safe and non-destructive way.

This paper presents a comparative study on Magnetic-Dispersion based Energy Harvesting Systems (MD-EHS) on electrical conductors that supply power for a three-phase AC motor. It introduces two MD-EHS which are based on magnetic cores of different material, named, nanocrystalline, ferrite and iron powder. The first one consists of harvesting energy from magnetic flux through three symmetrical magnetic cores installed on each power conductors of a three-phase AC motor. The second one consists of a single magnetic core for harvesting energy from magnetic flux of only one of these conductors. Both ones have an AC/DC converter and a variable resistor based load. Experimental results have agreed with the theoretical analysis and show that the first proposed MD-EHS is capable of supplying 14 times more energy than the second MD-EHS, considering nanocrystalline cores and phase current of 3 A, and 7.5 times more energy, considering ferrite cores and phase current of 9 A. Such energy can be applied to various low-power devices, especially in wireless sensor network.

The umbucajazeira is specie native to the Brazilian Northeast semiarid areas, which is economically explored based on the fruit. The fruit has a high agroindustrial potential, mainly for jam production. The aim of this study was to evaluate through sensorial analysis, two formulations of umbu-caja jams: a dietetic one with xylitol, used as an option for substitution of the sugars, and a conventional one. The proportion of 50:50:0.5 (pulp/sugar/pectin or pulp/xylitol/pectin) was used for jam processing. The mixture was concentrated up to reach 65°Brix. The jams were evaluated by 50 non-trained tasters, through a hedonic scale of nine points, whereas the following attributes were used: appearance, color, flavor, aroma and texture. The results of the physical and physicochemical analysis showed that the characteristics of jams prepared with sucrose are close to the ones made with xylitol, except for the total sugars and the energetic value. The jams had pH values ranging between 2.37 and 2.92;titratable acidity varying between 0.56 and 0.78 g citric acid/100 g pulp;soluble solids ranging between 60.92°and 65.08°Brix, respectively. A tendency for yellow color was noticed by the color analysis. Jam diet had the highest scores for appearance (7.4 - 7.7). No significant differences (p > 0.05) were obtained to flavor and texture. The fruit of the umbucajazeira showed to be adequate for jam manufature since they had good sensorial acceptance. The use of xylitol was satisfactory for obtaining a product with jam characteristics similar to the conventional jam, but with lower energetic value.

Activin plays an important role in numerous physiological processes such as cell differentiation and remodeling, regeneration and repair of tissues from various organs, angiogenesis, morphogenesis of glandular organs, pluripotency and differentiation of stem cells, cell adhesion and apoptosis. It participates in reproductive processes like embryogenesis, in the expression of Follicle Stimulating Hormone and Luteinizing Hormone and maturation of ovarian follicles and therefore has application in the area of reproduction of vertebrates. Given the economic importance of activin, we develop an efficient and economical method for the production of recombinant human activin A (rACT), using as expression system the yeast Pichia pastoris. rACT showed biological activity as it induced, on submicromolar dose, the increase of ovarian mass and the ovulation process in a mammal model.

In this paper we discuss ways to obtain information about the quality of ground water and their availability. We classify the different approaches in two categories： geophysical methods, e.g., electroresistivity sounding, seismic survey, gravimetry, MT （magnetotelluric） method, and geochemical methods. The former ones are able to provide information on the geological structure,meaning depth, range, amount of water and possible connections among different exploration areas or regions at risk due to contamination. On the other hand, the last ones provide information about the quality of water and the possible of use for agriculture, industry or human consumption. As a case study we aim at the Guarani Aquifer, more specifically at its recharge zone on the southern rim.

Impact of an Exercise Training Program in a Patient with Relapsing Polychondritis: A Case Report

Background: Exercise training has demonstrating to be safe and promote benefits for several rheumatologic autoimmune diseases. However, no study has evaluated the safety and benefits of exercise in relapsing polychondritis. Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of an exercise training program in a patient with relapsing polychondritis. Case presentation: A 67-year-old female patient with relapsing polychondritis in remission was submitted to a 12-week, twice weekly, aerobic and resistance training program. Aerobic capacity, muscle strength and function capacity, as well as body composition, were evaluated at baseline and after 12-weeks. Conclusions: Exercise training program demonstrated to be effective for increasing aerobic capacity, muscle strength and function, and for improving body composition in the patient. Further studies are necessary to confirm these findings.
