Background:Hemodialysis(HD) per se is a risk factor for *** the growing body of evidence on blood-flow restriction(BFR) ex.rcise in HD patients,identification of possible risk factors related to the prothrombotic agent D-dimer is required for the safety and feasibility of this training *** aim of the present study was to identify risk factors associated with higher D-dimer levels and to determine the acute effect of resistance ex.rcise(RE) with BFR on this ***:Two hundred and six.HD patients volunteered for this study(all with a glomerular filtration rate of x.rcise).RE repetitions included concentric and eccentric lifting phases(each lasting 2 s) and were supervised by a strength and conditioning ***:Several variables were associated with elevated levels of D-dimer,including higher blood glucose,citrate use,recent cardiovascular events,recent intercurrents,higher inflammatory status,catheter as vascular access,older patients(>70 years old),and HD ***,RE+BFR significantly increases D-dimer after 4 *** with borderline baseline D-dimer levels(400-490 ng/mL) displayed increased risk of elevating D-dimer over the normal range(≥500 ng/mL).Conclusion:These results identified factors associated with a heightened prothrombotic state and may assist in the screening process for HD patients who wish to undergo RE+BFR.D-dimer and/or other fibrinolysis factors should be assessed at baseline and throughout the protocol as a precautionary measure to max.mize safety during RE+BFR.

Dear editor:We sincerely thank Matthew *** for his insightful commentary1 on our recent publication in the Journal of Sport and Health Science.2 Clarkson's pioneering work in the development and application of blood flow restriction (BFR) ex.rcise protocols has undeniably laid the groundwork for subsequent investigations in this field,including our own.(3-6)His commentary not only highlights the relevance and timeliness of our study but also offers valuable perspectives on refining safety considerations for intradialytic BFR ex.rcise among hemodialysis patients.

Development of Active Films with Collagen Fiber and Polyvinyl Alcohol Mix.ure and Incorporation of Oregano and Rosemary Essential Oils in Their Matrix

The aim was to develop films with a new mix.ure of collagen fiber plus polyvinyl alcohol added of oregano or rosemary essential oils at different levels (0%, 2%, 4% and 6%), as well as to assess the antimicrobial activity, physical, optical, microstructure and molecular properties in the films. An interaction between the ingredients was observed at the molecular level by FTIR. The amide II and amide III bands, which are important to verify collagen conformation, showed intense peaks in the films. The formation of a network through collagen fibers was produced, acting as a reinforcement in matrix. The films with essential oil had an ex.ressive antimicrobial activity by the steam contact method (micro-atmosphere), mainly for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The mix.ure of collagen fiber plus polyvinyl alcohol added of essential oils is a promising matrix.for application in food as active packaging.

Synergistic Antiox.dant Activity in Brazilian Propolis Ex.ract Blends: An in Vitro Study

A simplex.lattice mix.ure design with response surface methodology was used to evaluate in vitro synergistic antiox.dant activity of red, green, and brown Brazilian propolis ex.ract blends. The in vitro antiox.dant capacity of propolis ex.ract blends was measured using the fluorine method of ox.gen radical absorption capacity assay (ORAC assay). A synergistic antiox.dant interaction was identified between green and brown propolis ex.racts, and the predictive model accused a binary mix.ure composed of 59% green and 41% brown propolis ex.racts with increased antiox.dant activity of about 54%. Our findings suggest a possible reduction in the dosages of these natural antiox.dants in their various potential applications, including health and food, thereby proving to be a highly promising alternative for the rational use and valorization of propolis.

Water Quality and the Impact by Contaminants of Emerging Concern: The Case of Verde River in Campos Gerais

In this article, we report the results of the work carried out on the Verde River, a predominantly urban river located in the city of Ponta Grossa, Paraná, Brazil. Developed in three stages, it aimed to evaluate the water quality through physical-chemical parameters, the presence of caffeine as a chemical tracer, and the compound Triclosan (TCS), considered a pollutant of emerging concern. An attempt was made to identify possible polluting sources along the river. Samples were collected at 4 points from the spring region, with sampling upstream and downstream of a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). The physical-chemical parameters were determined in situ, through portable analysers, as well as in the laboratory, in this case, through analyses using molecular absorption spectroscopy. For the determination of TCS and Caffeine, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used, preceded by a pre-concentration step in the solid phase (SPE), and the techniques were implemented after validation. The physicochemical evaluations of the surface samples showed a decline in water quality after the STP. Mean total phosphorus concentrations of 1.0 mg·L-1 (±0.4), as well as dissolved ox.gen (DO) levels below 5.0 mg·L-1 were verified downstream of the STP. Caffeine concentrations for Verde River were between 49.0 to 299.0 μg·L-1, verified upstream and downstream of the STP. The results demonstrated the relationship between the presence of caffeine and impaction, either by the input of raw sewage or by treated effluent. TCS was detected by chromatographic analysis, downstream of the STP, with an average concentration of 27.6 (±1.7) μg·L-1, noting that its presence was associated with the reactor maintenance procedure, with the STP in the process called bypass. Obtaining quality data from Verde River is important for the protection of the environment and affects the health of the population.

This paper records the first occurrence of Epistylis sp. on the body surface of Argulus sp. parasitizing Hoplias aimara from the upper Araguari River, in the eastern Amazon region, in the north of Brazil. Of the 16 specimens of H. aimara ex.mined, 93.7% had their pelvic, caudal and pectoral fins and tegument infested by Argulus sp. (n = 73), which in turn were infested by Epistylis sp. The specimens of Epistylis sp. from the body surface of Argulus sp. were analyzed using Scanning electron Microscopy (SEM). The present study also identified a widening of the geographic distribution of these two species of ectoparasites to the eastern Amazon region of Brazil.

In vitro and in vivo trypanocidal action of aescin and aescin liposomes against Trypanosoma evansi in ex.erimental mice

Objective:To verify the trypanocidal effectiveness of aescin and aescin liposomes against Trypanosoma evansi in vitro and in ***:Aescin and aescin liposomes were used in vitro on trypomastigotes at different concentrations(0.5%,1.0%and 2.0%) and ex.osure times(0,1,3,6 and 9 h).In vivo tests were performed using mice as the ex.erimental *** evansi infected mice were treated with aescin and aescin liposomes with doses of 60 and 100 mg/kg during 4 ***:The three concentrations tested in free form and nanoencapsulated showed trypanocidal activity in vitro,completely eliminating the parasites in small concentration after6 h of *** treated with aescin(100 mg/kg) and aescin liposomes(100 mg/kg)showed increase in longevity,however without curative ***:Active compounds present in natural products,such as aescin,may potentiate the treatment of trypanosomosis when used in association with other trypanocidal drugs.

Scanning electrochemical microscopy(SECM)and scanning vibrating electrode technique(SVET)were used to investigate the electrochemical behaviour of the top surface of the 2098-T351 alloy welded by friction stir welding(FSW).The SVET technique was efficient in identifying the cathodic and anodic weld *** welding joint(WJ),which comprises the thermomechanically affected zone(TMAZ)and the stir zone(SZ),was cathodic relative to the heated affected zone(HAZ)and the base metal(BM).The reactivities of the welding joint at the advancing side(AS)and the retreating side(RS)were analyzed and compared using SECM technique in the competition mode by monitoring the dissolved ox.gen as a redox.mediator in 0.005 mol L^-1 NaCl *** RS was more electrochemically active than the AS,and these results were correlated with the microstructural features of the welded alloy.

In the face of new diseases, medicine needs to reinvent itself in order to contain and control epidemics, such as the one we have recently faced, COVID-19, a disease with a wide spectrum of clinical severity. A new moment has been established, since the application of well-known, effective and safe medications for other diseases, has shown high success rates in the treatment of COVID-19. Thereunto, studies with early intervention are needed, which can change the unfavorable outcome of patients. In this article, we report the successful ex.erience using an oral strategy during the collapse of Belem (Para, Brazil) Health System. Two hundred and ten patients were diagnosed with respiratory failure due to COVID-19, with no option of hospital treatment due to lack of beds and resources. These patients were then started on therapeutic regimen consisting of 40 mg prednisolone, 40 mg enox.parin and macrolides (500 mg clarithromycin, 500 mg ax.tylcefurox.me) associated and followed in outpatient facilities. Two hundred and eight patients had an ex.ellent therapeutic response and there were only two fatalities. These results push research boundaries, valuing outpatient treatment with early use of prednisolone in the initial pulmonary phase, preventing severe COVID-19 pneumonitis. Adoption of the proposed treatment intends to reduce the need for hospitalization, as well as lethality, with social robust benefits and incalculable economic savings since involves the use of accessible, safe and not ex.ensive medications.
