BACKGROUND Necrotizing enterocolitis(NEC)is a multifactorial disease that predominantly affects premature *** dysbiosis plays a critical role in NEC pathogenesis in premature *** main risk factor for NEC in term infants is mesenteric hypoperfusion associated with ductaldependent congenital heart disease(CHD)that eventually leads to intestinal *** incidence of NEC in neonates with critical CHD is 6.8%-13%.However,the role of the intestinal microbiome in NEC pathogenesis in infants with ductal-dependent CHD remains *** SUMMARY A male term neonate with right atrial isomerism underwent modified Blalock-Taussig shunt placement on the 14^(th)day of life and had persistent mesenteric hypoperfusion after *** patient had episodes of NEC stageⅡA on the 1^(st)and 28^(th)days after cardiac *** microbial composition was analyzed before and after cardiac surgery by sequencing region v4 of the 16S rRNA *** surgery,species belonging to genera veillonella and Clostridia and class Gammaproteobacteria were detected,Bifidobacteriaceae showed a low *** first NEC episode was associated with postoperative hemodynamic instability,intestinal ischemiareperfusion injury during cardiopulmonary bypass,and a high abundance of Clostridium paraputrificum(Clostridium sensu stricto I)(56.1%).Antibacterial therapy after the first NEC episode resulted in increased abundance of Gammaproteobacteria,decreased abundance of Firmicutes,and low alpha *** changes in the microbial composition promoted the growth of Clostridium sensu strictoⅠ(72.0%)before the second NEC *** A high abundance of Clostridium sensu strictoⅠand mesenteric hypoperfusion may have contributed to NEC in the present case.

Inter-species variability in morphological traits creates a need to know the range of variability of characteristics in the species for taxonomic and ecological tasks. Copepoda Arctodiaptomus salinus, which inhabits water bodies across Eurasia and North Africa, plays a dominant role in plankton of different water bodies-from fresh to hypersaline. This work assesses the intra- and inter-population morphometric variability of A. sa/inus in the Mediterranean-Black Sea region and discusses some observed regularities. The variability of linear body parameters and proportions was studied. The impacts of salinity, temperature, and population density on morphological characteristics and their variability can manifest themselves in different ways at the intra- and inter-population levels. A significant effect of salinity, pH and temperature on the body proportions was not found. Their intra-population variability is dependent on temperature and salinity. Sexual dimorphism of A. salinus manifests in different linear parameters, proportions, and their variability. There were no effects of temperature, pH and salinity on the female/male parameter ratio. There were significant differences in the body proportions of males and females in different populations. The influence of temperature, salinity, and population density can be attributed to 80%-90% of intra-population variability of A. salinus. However, these factors can explain less than 40% of inter-population differences. Significant differences in the body proportions of males and females from different populations may suggest that some local populations ofA. salinus in the Mediterranean-Black Sea region are in the initial stages of differentiation.

Background: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is caused by complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors. Mendelian forms of PD rarely occur in practice, but respective genes may play some role in pathogenesis of a common sporadic form of the disease. Methods: We analyzed most frequent known point mutations (PMs) and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes responsible for monogenic PD in 408 Russian patients, using arrayed primer extension (APEX), real-time PCR, and restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. Results: We detected only three heterozygous PMs in the PARK2 gene in three non-related patients with early-onset sporadic PD. No association between PD and the studied SNPs was identified. Conclusion: The examined PMs and SNPs in genes responsible for monogenic PD do not contribute significantly to the development of sporadic PD in Russia.

Antimicrobial Activity of Wild Plant Seed Extracts against Human Bacterial and Plant Fungal Pathogens

Five wild plant species belonging to different families (Chenopodium album, Plantago major, Elytrigia elongata, Filipendula ulmaria and Nigella sativa) widely spread in Russian Federation and the former USSR were evaluated for their ability to inhibit growth of two important human food-borne pathogens (Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Listeria monocytogenes strain EGD-e) and eight plant pathogens (Alternaria alternata, Alternaria tenuissima, Bipolaris sorokiniana, Stagonospora nodorum, Fusarium solani, Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium culmorum and Phytophtora infestans). To isolate biologically active compounds from seeds, a step-wise procedure including extraction with hexane, ethyl acetate, ethanol, and 10% acetic acid followed by reversed-phase HPLC was developed. Using disc-diffusion assay, the highest activity against E. coli O157:H7 was observed with extracts from F. ulmaria (hexane and ethyl acetate extracts and the unbound RP-HPLC fraction) and P. major (ethyl acetate extract and the unbound RP-HPLC fraction);E. elongate (the unbound RP-HPLC fraction) was less active. The extracts from P. major and E. elongate (the unbound RP-HPLC fractions) were equally highly active against L. monocytogenes, while those of F. ulmaria (the unbound RP-HPLC fraction) and N. sativa (hexane and ethyl acetate extracts) were less active against this pathogen. The dynamics of L. monocytogenes EGD-е and E. coli O157:H7 growth in the presence of two most potent extracts (RP-HPLC-unbound fractions of P. major and E. elongate and the hexane extract of F. ulmaria) was studied.

Especially high health risks associated with impacts of metallic nanoparticles (Me-NPs) and their presence in the workplace and ambient air of not only the nano-industry but also of some long-existing traditional technologies make it necessary, along with keeping respective dangerous exposures as low as possible, to look for ways of increasing the organism’s resistance to them. Based on theoretical premises of such beneficial interference with toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics of Me-NPs developed by our research team and on understanding general and specific key mechanisms of different Me-NPs’ toxic action, we proposed several bioprotective complexes (BPCs) comprising mainly pectin, some vitamins, glutamate, glycine, N-acetylcysteine, omega-3 PUFA, and different essential trace elements. Results of our animal experiments with different Me-NPs showed that, against the background of such BPCs’ oral administration, the integral and specific toxicity of Me-NPs and even their genotoxicity can be markedly attenuated. Therefore we would recommend to further develop this vector of nano-toxicological research.

Environment chemical pollution can be persistent, and even virtually irremovable. For some chemicals in the workplace environment reliably safe low exposure levels are technically unattainable or presumably nonexistent. As a supplement to decreasing harmful exposures to as low levels as possible, the “biological prophylaxis” aims at enhancing host’s protective mechanisms. During over 30 years in animal experiments modeling isolated or combined chronic or subchronic exposures to silica, asbestos, monazite, lead, chromium, arsenic, manganese, nickel, vanadium, nanosilver, nanocopper, formaldehyde, phenol, naphthalene, benzo(a)pyrene we tested so-called “bioprophylatic complexes” (BPCs) comprising innocuous substances with theoretically expected beneficial influence on the toxicokinetics and/or toxicodynamics of those toxics. The BPCs proved protectively effective in animal experiments were then subjected to controlled field trials on restricted groups of volunteers. Once the effectiveness and safety of a BPC was established, it was recommended for practical use, first of all, in the most vulnerable population groups (children, pregnant women) and in the most harmful occupations. At each stage of this work the effectiveness of the bioprophylactic approach to chemical risks management was successfully demonstrated. The BPCs tested up to now proved capable of mitigating systemic toxicity, cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and mutagenicity of the above-listed chemicals.

The Effects of Nanodiamonds at the Action of Colored Metal Ions on the Skin of Guinea Pigs

The protective effect of modified nanodiamonds (MND) under the action of cobalt and nickel ions on the skin of Guinea pigs was shown. At the action of chromium ions on the skin of animals, the protective effect of MND was not found. The differences are related to different adsorption properties of MND to the investigated colored metal ions. It is shown in vitro that MND can adsorb ions of cobalt and nickel and don’t bind ions of chromium from aqueous medium. The perspectives using of MND as a new drug for the prevention allergic dermatitis caused by action of bivalent ions of metals are discussed.
