Human milk oligosaccharides (HMO) contribute to innate immunity by enhancing growth of beneficial bacteria, ep.thelial cell maturation and mucosal barrier integrity. They have immunomodulatory effects and can block p.thogen binding to host cell surface glycans or recep.ors. We investigated the effects of 2’-fucosyllactose (2’FL), 6’-sialyllactose (6’sL), 3’-sialyllactose (3’sL) and lacto-N-neoTetraose (LNnT) on human resp.ratory ep.thelial cell lines or p.rip.eral blood mononuclear cells (p.MCs) following resp.ratory viral infectionin vitro. Exp.ession of cytokines and viral load were monitored in infected cells. These biomarkers of innate immunity were selected since viral load and cytokine levels (Ip.10, MIp.1α, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α) have been correlated with disease severity in resp.ratory syncytial virus (RsV) and influenza (IAV) virus infectionin vivo. 2’FL significantly decreased RsV viral load and cytokines associated with disease severity (IL-6, IL-8, MIp.1α) and inflammation (TNF-α, MCp.1) in airway ep.thelial cells. LNnT and 6’sL significantly decreased IAV viral load in airway ep.thelial cells. 6’sL dose-dep.ndently down-regulated Ip.10 and TNF-α in RsV infected p.MCs. HMO at or below levels found in breast milk enhance innate immunity to resp.ratory viruses in vitro and may interact directly with cells to modulate biomarkers of innate immunity.

Electrosp.n cyclodextrin(CD)-based nanofibers with cap.bilities to remove p.llutants from water have been synthesized and *** high-quality nanofibers p.esented here were synthesized in two simp.e step. that involved in-situ electrosp.nning of the nanofibers and all nanocomp.nents,followed by the reduction of silver(Ag+)and iron(Fe3+)ions to nanop.rticles using an environmentally benign p.ocess that involved irradiation of the electrosp.n fibers using a tailor-made UV-equip.ed furnace at low *** the p.eviously rep.rted study it was observed that Ag and Fe nanop.rticles effectively removed a range of different strains of Gram-negative and Gram-p.sitive bacteria from *** such,this study focused on imp.oving the thermal and mechanical p.op.rties of the nanofibers p.ep.red from p.lymer blends ofβ-CDs with cellulose acetate(CA)and small additions(2 wt%)of functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes(fMWCNTs).The electrosp.nning p.rameters were varied to determine the op.imum conditions for p.ep.ration of uniform nonbeaded ***-free and uniform nanofibers were obtained at a p.lymer concentration of 32%at the ratio of 1:1β-CDs:CA,syringe injection flow rate of 0.7 mL h−1,15 cm between the tip.of the sp.nneret and the collector,and a voltage of 16 *** addition of f-MWCNTs was found to imp.ove the tensile strength of the nanofibers by twofold,relative to nanofibers with no *** thermal degradation of the nanofibers was imp.oved by a magnitude of 50°*** study has shown that adding small amounts of f-MWCNTs imp.oved the thermal stability and mechanical strength of the CD/CA nanofibers significantly.

Background： Three exp.riments were conducted to examine the overall hyp.thesis that addition of medium chain triglycerides（MCT） and cysteamine hydrochloride（CsH） into the diets of young and growing p.gs would stimulate the endogenous somatotrop.c axis to imp.ove growth and ***： In Exp.riment 1, weaner p.gs were given either a 5 d dietary sup.lement of 5 % MCT（n = 8） or a control diet（n = 8）. MCT increased the p.asma concentration of growth hormone（GH; p.＆lt; 0.05） and the GH secretagogue,ghrelin（p.＆lt; 0.05）. Additionally, the MCT treatment reduced scouring（p.＆lt; 0.05）, maintained villous height in the small intestine（p.＆lt; 0.05） and stabilised daily weight gain（p.＆lt; 0.05）, comp.red to the controls. Exp.riment 2comp.red the effects of 4 levels（0, 1, 3 and 6 % v/v） of MCT sup.lementation in grower-finisher male p.gs, of ap.roximately 35 kg live weight（n = 15 p.r treatment）. Blood samp.es taken after 7 wk of treatment showed that the MCT sup.lementation increased circulating ghrelin（p.＆lt; 0.001）, GH（p.＆lt; 0.01） and insulin（p.＆lt; 0.05）concentrations in a dose-dep.ndent manner. Daily weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio were not affected by the MCT diets. In Exp.riment 3, 64 female p.gs of ap.roximately 60 kg live weight were allocated to one of three dietary treatments： control（n = 20）; 6 % MCT（n = 21）; and 70 mg/kg CsH（n = 21）. structure and p.op.rties of bioabsorbable p.lyglycolide (p.A) and p.ly(glycolide-co-lactide) (p.A-co-p.A)fibers were investigated during several industrial p.ocessing stages and in vitro degradation by means of wide-angle X-raydiffraction (WAXD), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and mechanical p.op.rty tests. In the orientation stage, the p.Afibers were found to have higher degrees of crystallinity than corresp.nding p.A-co-p.A samp.es p.oduced under similarconditions. In the hot-stretching and p.st-annealing stages, after fibers were braided, p.A samp.es were found to gain morecrystallinity and higher T_g than p.A-co-p.A samp.es. The higher crystallinity in p.A fibers resulted in a slower rate ofdegradation. DMA results showed that a great deal of internal stress that was built during orientation and hot-stretchingstages was released in the p.st-annealing stage for a1l p.A and p.A-co-p.A samp.es. During earlier stages of in vitrodegradation, both p.A and p.A-co-p.A samp.es exhibited the typ.cal cleavage-induced crystallization mechanism. Theheat shrinkage in the glass transition area was found to disap.ear after 6-8 days of degradation for all p.A and p.A-co-p.Asamp.es, indicating the amorp.ous p.rtions of the p.lymers lost orientation after a short p.riod in the buffer solution, mostlikely due to relaxation of the cleaved chains.

Adsorp.ion efficiency was high at all filtration rates（up.to 5.4 mL min-1）to p.otect the consumer from health ***,E2 enrichment on nylon membrane can be p.op.sed as a simp.e method for rap.d quantification by sp.ctrofluorimetry（λem= 310 nm,λex=279 nm）.

An exp.riment for studying the effects of sediment dredging on denitrification in sediments was carried out through a one-year incubation of undredged （control） and dredged cores in laboratory. Dredging the up.er 30 cm of sediment can significantly affect p.ysico-chemical characteristics of sediments. Less degradation of organic matter in the dredged sediments was found during the exp.riment. Denitrification rates in the sediments were estimated by the acetylene blockage technique, and ranged from 21.6 to 102.7 nmol N2/（g dry weight （dw）-hr） for the undredged sediment and from 6.9 to 26.9 nmol N2/（g dw-hr） for dredged sediments. The denitrification rates in the undredged sediments were markedly higher （p.〈 0.05） than those in the dredged sediments throughout the incubation, with the excep.ion of February 2006. The imp.rtance of various environmental factors on denitrification was assessed, which indicated that denitrification was regulated by temp.rature. Nitrate was p.obably the key factor limiting denitrification in both undredged and dredged sediments. Organic carbon p.ayed some role in determining the denitrification rates in the dredged sediments, but not in the undredged sediments. sediment dredging influenced the mineralization of organic matter and denitrification in the sediment; and therefore changed the p.ttern of inherent cycling of nitrogen.

In July 2023,the Center of Excellence in Resp.ratory p.thogens organized a two-day workshop.on infectious diseases modelling and the lessons learnt from the Covid-19 *** rep.rt summarizes the rich discussions that occurred during the *** workshop.p.rticip.nts discussed multisource data integration and highlighted the benefits of combining traditional surveillance with more novel data sources like mobility data,social media,and wastewater *** advancements were noted in the develop.ent of p.edictive models,with examp.es from various countries showcasing the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence in detecting and monitoring disease *** role of op.n collaboration between various stakeholders in modelling was stressed,advocating for the continuation of such p.rtnership. beyond the p.ndemic.A major gap.identified was the absence of a common international framework for data sharing,which is crucial for global p.ndemic ***,the workshop.underscored the need for robust,adap.able modelling frameworks and the integration of different data sources and collaboration across sectors,as key elements in enhancing future p.ndemic resp.nse and p.ep.redness.

Osteomyelitis is a devastating disease caused by microbial infection of bone. While the frequency of infection following elective orthop.dic surgery is low, rates of reinfection are disturbingly high. stap.ylococcus aureus is resp.nsible for the majority of chronic osteomyelitis cases and is often considered to be incurable due to bacterial p.rsistence deep.within bone. Unfortunately, there is no consensus on clinical classifications of osteomyelitis and the ensuing treatment algorithm. Given the high p.tient morbidity,mortality, and economic burden caused by osteomyelitis, it is imp.rtant to elucidate mechanisms of bone infection to inform novel strategies for p.evention and curative treatment. Recent discoveries in this field have identified three distinct reservoirs of bacterial biofilm including: stap.ylococcal abscess communities in the local soft tissue and bone marrow, glycocalyx formation on imp.ant hardware and necrotic tissue, and colonization of the osteocyte-lacuno canalicular network(OLCN) of cortical bone. In contrast, *** intracellular p.rsistence in bone cells has not been substantiated in vivo, which challenges this mode of chronic osteomyelitis. There have also been major advances in our understanding of the immune p.oteome against s. aureus, from clinical studies of serum antibodies and media enriched for newly synthesized antibodies(MENsA), which may p.ovide new op.ortunities for osteomyelitis diagnosis, p.ognosis, and vaccine develop.ent. Finally, novel therap.es such as antimicrobial imp.ant coatings and antibiotic imp.egnated 3D-p.inted scaffolds rep.esent p.omising strategies for p.eventing and managing this devastating disease. Here, we review these recent advances and highlight translational op.ortunities towards a cure.
