Dendrochronology and climatic signals in the wood of Nectandra oppositifolia from a dense rain forest in southern Brazil

Nectandra is one of the most representative genera of Lauraceae in the subtropical Atlantic Forest of Brazil. The objective of this work was to study the dendrochronological potential of Nectandra oppositifolia Nees and Mart. from two sites in Santa Catarina State in southern Brazil. A tree-ring chronology of 34 trees was developed. The time span ranged from 1843 to 2013. The oldest and youngest trees were 171 and 47 years-old and the average length of the series was 103 years. Average diameter and annual increment were 20.64 cm and0.74 mm a-1; diameter and age were unrelated. The species has good dendrochronological potential with an intercorrelation of 0.61 between sites, indicating the existence of a synchronous pattern in the development of the trees. The climate response of the species could be seen by negative tree growth effects for previous hot and current rainy growth seasons.

Deep Neural Networks(DNNs)have become the tool of choice for machine learning practitioners *** important aspect of designing a neural network is the choice of the activation function to be used at the neurons of the different *** this work,we introduce a four-output activation function called the Reflected Rectified Linear Unit(RRe LU)activation which considers both a feature and its negation during *** activation function is"sparse",in that only two of the four possible outputs are active at a given *** test our activation function on the standard MNIST and CIFAR-10 datasets,which are classification problems,as well as on a novel Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD)dataset which is posed as a regression *** the baseline network for the MNIST dataset,having two hidden layers,our activation function improves the validation accuracy from 0.09 to 0.97 compared to the well-known Re LU *** the CIFAR-10 dataset,we use a deep baseline network that achieves 0.78 validation accuracy with 20 epochs but overfits the *** the RRe LU activation,we can achieve the same accuracy without overfitting the *** the CFD dataset,we show that the RRe LU activation can reduce the number of epochs from 100(using Re LU)to 10 while obtaining the same levels of performance.

Heritage agencies have been protecting modern architecture in Brazil since 1948,starting with Oscar Niemeyer’s Pampulha *** far 75 modern works have been listed mostly because of their artistic *** prevents ***,it does not ensure proper conservation,and many interventions have disfigured works of architecture listed as modern *** those tolerated by the Brazilian heritage agencies,an early one is the roofing of the balconies of Oscar Niemeyer’s Ouro Preto Grand *** those approved were the construction of theatres diverging from those designed but unexecuted at the time of the listing,and renovations associated with the introduction or updating of air conditioning *** former included one by Niemeyer himself,at his Ibirapuera Park complex,and another at Affonso eduardo Reidy’s Museum of Modern Art of Rio de *** latter included the Pampulha Dance Hall,two Ibirapuera Park Pavilions,and the Planalto *** paper analyses these retrofits along with the restoration project of Reidy’s Pedregulho Housing Estate,and discusses the connections of the heritage agencies’stands regarding these interventions with scientism and the traditions of the conservation *** suggests a bias of the agencies toward affirmation of historical values and celebration of picturesque disorder,and defends the need for their reorientation towards affirmation of the modern compositional logic.

Dendritic Growth, Eutectic Features and Their Effects on Hardness of a Ternary Sn–Zn–Cu Solder Alloy

The present investigation is based on the results of a directionally solidified （DS） Sn-9 wt%Zn-2 wt%Cu alloy, including primary/secondary/tertiary dendrite arm spacings of the Sn-rich matrix, the morphologies of the eutectic mixture and the corresponding interphase spacing, the nature and proportion of the Cu-Zn intermetallic compound （IMC）. The main purpose is to establish interrelations of these microstructure features with experimental solidification thermal parameters, such as cooling rates and growth rates （v）, macrosegregation and hardness. Such interrelations are interesting for both industry and academy since they represent a tool permitting the preprogramming of final properties based on the design of the microstructure. In the case of Sn-Zn-Cu alloys, hardly anything is known about the combined effects of the length scale of the microstructure and fraction and distribution of the primary IMC on hardness. The alloy microstructure is composed of a β-Sn dendritic region, surrounded by a eutectic mixture of α-Zn and β-Sn phases and the γ-Cu5Zn8 IMC. The eutectic interphase spacing varies in the range 1.2-3.6 μm, with the α-Zn phase having a globular morphology for ν 〉 0.5 mm/s and a needle-like morphology for ν 〈 0.3 mm/s. A modified Hall-Petch-type experimental expression relating hardness to the interphase spacing is proposed.

Hox and ParaHox genes constitute two families of developmental regulators that pattern the Anterior-Posterior body axis in all bilaterians. The members of these two groups of genes are usually arranged in genomic clusters and work in a coordinated fashion, both in space and in time. While the mechanistic aspects of their action are relatively well known, it is still unclear how these systems evolved. For instance, we still need a proper model of how the Hox and ParaHox clusters were assembled over time. This problem is due to the shortage of information on gene complements for many taxa （mainly basal metazoans） and the lack of a consensus phylogenetic model of animal relationships to which we can relate our new findings. Recently, several studies have shown that the Acoelomorpha most probably represent the first offshoot of the Bilateria. This finding has prompted us, and others, to study the Hox and ParaHox complements in these animals, as well as their activity during development. In this review, we analyze how the current knowledge of Hox and ParaHox genes in the Acoelomorpha is shaping our view of bilaterian evolution.

The term “microgravity” is used to describe the “weightlessness” or “zero-g” circumstances that can only be found in space beyond earth’s atmosphere. Rhodobacter sphaeroides is a gram-negative purple phototroph, used as a model organism for this study due to its genomic complexity and metabolic versatility. Its genome has been completely sequenced, and profiles of the differential gene expression under aerobic, semi-aerobic, and photosynthetic conditions were examined. In this study, we hypothesized that R. sphaeroides will show altered growth characteristics, morphological properties, and gene expression patterns when grown under simulated microgravity. To test that, we measured the optical density and colony-forming units of cell cultures grown under both microgravity and normal gravity conditions. Differences in the cell morphology were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images by measuring the length and the surface area of the cells under both conditions. Furthermore, we also identified homologous genes of R. spheroides using the differential gene expression study of Acidovorax under microgravity in our laboratory. Growth kinetics results showed that R. sphaeroides cells grown under microgravity experience a shorter log phase and early stationary phase compared to the cells growing under normal gravity conditions. The length and surface area of the cells under microgravity were significantly higher confirming that bacterial cells experience altered morphological features when grown under microgravity conditions. Differentially expressed homologous gene analysis indicated that genes coding for several COG and GO functions, such as metabolism, signal-transduction, transcription, translation, chemotaxis, and cell motility are differentially expressed to adapt and survive microgravity.

The Ria de Aveiro lagoon has been considered one of the most important Southern European long-term monitoring sites(LTER-site)concerning climate change and anthropogenic ***,studies concerning pesticide contamination herein are few and mostly ***,56 pesticides dissolved in the aqueous phase(DAP)and suspended particulate matter(SPM)were examined to fill the knowledge gap,considering the hydrophobic nature of most evaluated *** samples were taken seasonally from eight sites,and both DAP and SPM fractions were analysed by gas-chromatography-mass *** annual average concentrations of fungicides,herbicides and insecticides were≈57 ng/L,≈409 ng/L and≈1058 ng/L in DAP and≈7μg/g,≈28μg/g and≈67μg/g in *** pesticides and the excessive phosphate concentrations suggest that the lagoon's water quality may be hazardous to biota and *** were identified as the most threatened trophic level using deterministic risk assessment,with chlorpyriphos and chlorfenvinphos being the primary *** experiments with Artemia and Daphnia supported the suppositions.

We prove the quasi-optimal convergence of a standard adaptive finite element method(AFEM)for a class of nonlinear elliptic second-order equations of monotone *** adaptive algorithm is based on residual-type a posteriori error estimators and Dörfler’s strategy is assumed for *** first prove a contraction property for a suitable definition of total error,analogous to the one used by Diening and Kreuzer(2008)and equivalent to the total error defined by Cascón ***.(2008).This contraction implies linear convergence of the discrete solutions to the exact solution in the usual H1 Sobolev ***,we use this contraction to derive the optimal complexity of the *** results are based on ideas from Diening and Kreuzer and extend the theory from Cascón *** a class of nonlinear problems which stem from strongly monotone and Lipschitz operators.
