Synthesis of coral-like structures of Pr-Yb co-doped YIG: Structural,optical, magnetic and antimicrobial properties

coral-like structures of the Y_(3-x)Pr_(x)Fe_(5-y)Yb_(y)O_(12),(0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.04, 0.00 ≤ y ≤ 0.02) compound were synthesized using the sol-gel method. Structural investigation certified the YIG cubic crystal structure formation, without any secondary phase. It is shown that, the relatively large ionic radius of the dopant cations results in an expansion of the lattice parameter, variations in the Iona-O-Iondangle, Iona-O,Iond-O and Ionc-O bond distances and decrease in the average crystallite size. Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) and Raman measurements are essential to testify the single-phase formation of YIG crystal structure and are observed changes in the stretching and vibrational modes, respectively. The morphological study, energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS) spectra and textural properties show corallike structures, peaks associated with Pr^(3+) and Yb^(3+) atoms and the effect of dopants on surface area,diameter, and pore volume, respectively. The optical analysis from diffuse reflectance spectra witnessed an increase in the optical gap band, a decrease in Urbach energy and blue shift in the charge transfer,correlated with the expansion of the unit cell due to the dopant's insertion in the YIG structure. A typical ferrimagnetic behavior is exhibited by the Y_(3-x)Pr_(x)Fe_(5-y)Yb_(y)O_(12)compound. The saturation magnetization(M_(s)), cubic anisotropy constant(K_(1)) and coercive field(H_(c)) increase with the Pr^(3+)cations content, as consequence of their magnetic nature and distribution around of Fe^(3+)ions due to the coexistence with the Yb^(3+). Finally, for the first time, antibacterial tests by mean of the direct contact method were performed for YIG co-doped with Pr^(3+)and Yb^(3+)and it is shown that, relatively high dosages of Pr^(3+) cations favored the activity against S. aureus, therefore, a new biological property for YIG doped with rare earths is presented.

Management of hepatitis c in patients with chronic kidney disease

Hepatitis c virus(HcV) infection is highly prevalent among chronic kidney disease(cKD) subjects under hemodialysis and in kidney transplantation(KT) recipients, being an important cause of morbidity and mortality in these patients. The vast majority of HcV chronic infections in the hemodialysis setting are currently attributable to nosocomial transmission. Acute and chronic hepatitis c exhibits distinct clinical and laboratorial features, which can impact on managementand treatment decisions. In hemodialysis subjects, acute infections are usually asymptomatic and anicteric; since spontaneous viral clearance is very uncommon in this context, acute infections should be treated as soon as possible. In KT recipients, the occurrence of acute hepatitis c can have a more severe course, with a rapid progression of liver fibrosis. In these patients, it is recommended to use pegylated interferon(PEG-IFN) in combination with ribavirin, with doses adjusted according to estimated glomerular filtration rate. There is no evidence suggesting that chronic hepatitis c exhibits a more aggressive course in cKD subjects under conservative management. In these subjects, indication of treatment with PEG-IFN plus ribavirin relies on the cKD stage, rate of progression of renal dysfunction and the possibility of a preemptive transplant. HcV infection has been associated with both liver disease-related deaths and cardiovascular mortality in hemodialysis patients. Among those individuals, low HcV viral loads and the phenomenon of intermittent HcV viremia are often observed, and sequential HcV RNA monitoring is needed. Despite the poor tolerability and suboptimal efficacy of antiviral therapy in cKD patients, many patients can achieve sustained virological response, which improve patient and graft outcomes. Hepatitis c eradication before KT theoretically improves survival and reduces the occurrence of chronic graft nephropathy, de novo glomerulonephritis and post-transplant diabetes mellitus.

Development of mucoadhesive sericin/alginate particles loaded with ibuprofen for sustained drug delivery

A sericin/alginate blend was successfully applied as a matrix for incorporation of *** provided a sustained release formulation,which could improve the therapeutic efficacy of ibuprofen and patient adherence to *** increased the proportion of drug incorporated into the particles (i.e., the drug incorporation efficiency),with incorporation rates between 73.01%±1.70%and 94.15%±4.21%. Efficiency of soil-applied ^(67)Zn-enriched fertiliser across three consecutive crops

A very small amount of applied zinc(Zn) is taken up by crops, resulting in low recovery by plants. Adding elemental sulphur to zinc oxide(ZnO) fertiliser could improve Zn solubilisation and exert a higher residual effect on crops than soluble Zn sources. We produced an isotopically labelled Zn-elemental sulphur fertiliser and evaluated its performance in comparison to traditional Zn sources during sequential crop cultivation. Three ^(67)Zn-labelled fertilisers,ZnO, zinc sulphate(ZnSO_(4)), and ZnO co-granulated with elemental sulphur(ZnOS^(0)), were soil applied, and their contributions to the uptake of Zn by three consecutive crops, wheat, ryegrass, and corn, were assessed in a 294-d pot experiment. The contributions of Zn fertilisers followed the order: ZnSO_(4) > ZnO= ZnOS^(0). The relative contributions of Zn fertilisers were lower in the first crop than in the subsequent crops. The overall recovery of applied Zn by the three crops was higher for ZnSO_(4) than for ZnO and ZnOS^(0), reaching 1.56%, 0.45%, and 0.33% of the applied Zn, respectively. Zinc recovery by plants was very low, regardless of the source of Zn. Adding elemental sulphur to ZnO did not increase its effectiveness up to 294 d after application. Fertiliser contribution was higher for the subsequent crops than for the initial crop, indicating the importance of assessing the residual effects of Zn fertilisers.

The aim of this investigation was to assess the effect of yellow mombin bagasse extract(YMBE),alone or combined with commercial cryoprotectants,on the quality changes during cold storage of surimi and surimi gel prepared with the cutting by-product of green weakfish(cynoscion virescens).Four treatments were elaborated:Sc(surimi control),SE(surimi with addition of 1%extract),ScP(surimi with the addition of 4%sorbitol+4%sucrose)and SEcP(surimi with addition of 1%extract+4%sorbitol+4%sucrose).The addition of the extract was effective in maintaining the whiteness of the surimi and its gel throughout *** the end of 12 days of cold storage,the surimi gel prepared with SE treatment presented high whiteness compared to the control *** inclusion of 1%YMBE in isolation or combined with commercial cryoprotectants showed a positive effect on the inhibition of lipid and protein oxidation of *** conclusion,YMBE extract is a promising alternative to be used as a natural food preservative in surimi and surimi gel.

In this article,an analysis of heat transfer in a porcelain-housed ZnO surge arrester is *** to the fact that ZnO-based surge arresters are key components for protection and reliability of electrical systems,it is necessary to seek techniques to assure correct *** porcelain-housed arresters,the air gap leads to an increased thermal resistance between the ambient and the varistor ***,a thermal analysis must consider convection and radiation heat transfer mechanisms,besides heat *** study proposes the use of computational simulations in combination with thermography as a tool for a temperature-based estimation of the varistor *** the analysis,temperature rise tests were performed in a 69-kV ceramic-housed arrester to measure material emissivity and produce data to fit the simulated ***,the thermal response of the surge arresters subject to an impulsive energy input was *** simulations allow to relate varistors temperature and housing temperature with regard to a specified amount of dissipated *** obtained results show that the used technique can be an effective method for arrester monitoring and may allow to define assessing criteria for a porcelain-housed arrester based on housing temperature measurements.

Status and prospects for symmetric organic redox flow batteries

As environmental concerns from fossil fuel consumption intensify, large-scale energy storage becomes imperative for the integration of renewable sources like wind, hydro, and solar with the electrical *** flow batteries, particularly those employing organic molecules, are positioned as a key technology for this purpose. This review explores the growing field of symmetric organic redox flow batteries(ORFBs) within this context. Unlike traditional asymmetric designs based on unique active materials for each electrode, symmetric ORFBs involve a single bipolar species for both electrodes. This review highlights the benefits of a symmetric design, and categorizes five distinct classes of organic bipolar molecules used in both aqueous and non-aqueous solvents. By providing a comprehensive overview of their cell cycling and performance characteristics, the strengths and weaknesses of the diverse categories of bipolar molecules are highlighted for both solvent systems, as are opportunities for future development. This should guide new research directions and advance the development of practical symmetric ORFBs.

BAcKGROUND Hepatitis c virus(HcV)infection is responsible for a chronic liver inflammation,which may cause end-stage liver disease and hepatocellular *** E(protein:ApoE,gene:APOE),a key player in cholesterol metabolism,is mainly synthesized in the liver and APOE polymorphisms may influence HcV-induced liver *** To determine whether APOE alleles affect outcomes in HcV-infected patients with liver cirrhosis following orthotopic liver transplantation(OLT).METHODS This was a cohort study in which 179 patients,both genders and aged 34-70 years,were included before or after(up to 10 years follow-up)*** injury severity was assessed using different criteria,including METAVIR and models for endstage liver *** polymorphisms were analyzed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain *** The APOE3 allele was the most common(67.3%).In inflammation severity of biopsies from 89 OLT explants and 2 patients in pre-transplant,the degree of severe inflammation(A3F4,0.0%)was significantly less frequent than in patients with minimal and moderate degree of inflammation(≤A2F4,16.2%)P=0.048,in patients carrying the APOE4 allele when compared to *** addition,a significant difference was also found(≤A2F4,64.4%vs A3F4,0.0%;P=0.043)and(A1F4,57.4%vs A3F4,0.0%;P=0.024)in APOE4 patients when compared to APOE3 *** fibrosis degree of the liver graft in 8 of 91 patients and the lack of the E4 allele was associated with more moderate fibrosis(F2)(P=0.006).cONcLUSION Our results suggest that the E4 allele protects against progression of liver fibrosis and degree of inflammation in HcV-infected patients.
