Objective: The aim of this study was to establish the knowledge and attitude of family physcians offering primary health care, towards adult vaccination and their own vaccination coverage. Methods: This descriptive study was performed in May 2009 in Kayseri, Turkey. 282 family physician accepted to fill a questionnaire about adult vaccination. Results: Most of the family physcians (83.0%) thought adult vaccination as a modality of protection and 66.7% wanted a vaccination scheme just like the one in childhood. Their own vaccination rate for Hepatitis B was 67.0% and 58.5% for influenza at any time. Only half of the physcians were vaccinated within the season for influenza. Only 9.2% of the doctors have stated that they ask questions to their patients about their vaccination status. When physcians were questioned about the vaccines they advise to their patients aged 65 and more;70.6% stated influenza and 39.7% stated pneumococcus. Conclusion: In spite of being in the risk group, family physicians have low vaccination coverage rates. Suggestion of the necessary vaccines to the risk groups or to their patients at risk is low as well.

AIM: To investigate whether expression of selected mi RNAs obtained from fibrotic liver biopsies correlate with fibrosis ***: Altogether, 52 patients were enrolled in the study representing various etiologic backgrounds of fibrosis: 24 cases with chronic hepatitis infections(types B, C), 19 with autoimmune liver diseases(autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, overlapping syndrome cases), and 9 of mixed etiology(alcoholic and nonalcoholic steatosis, cryptogenic cases). Severity of fibrosis was determined by both histologic staging using the METAVIR scoring system and noninvasive transient elastography. Following RNAisolation, expression levels of mi R-21, mi R-122, mi R-214, mi R-221, mi R-222, and mi R-224 were determined using Taq Man Micro RNA Assays applying mi R-140 as the reference. Selection of mi RNAs was based on their characteristic up- or downregulation observed in hepatocellular carcinoma. Relative expression of mi RNAs was correlated with fibrosis stage and liver stiffness(LS) value measured by transient elastography, as well as with serum alanine aminotransferase(ALT) ***: The expression of individual mi RNAs showed deregulated patterns in stages F1-F4 as compared with stage F0, but only the reduced level of mi R-122 in stage F4 was statistically significant(P < 0.04). When analyzing mi RNA expression in relation to fibrosis, levels of mi R-122 and mi R-221 showed negative correlations with fibrosis stage, and mi R-122 was found to correlate negatively and mi R-224 positively with LS values(all P < 0.05). ALT levels displayed a positive correlation with mi R-21(P < 0.04). Negative correlations were observed in the fibrosis samples of mixed etiology between mi R-122 and fibrosis stage and LS values(P < 0.05), and in the samples of chronic viral hepatitis, between mi R-221 and fibrosis stage(P < 0.01), whereas mi R-21 showed positive correlation with ALT values in the samples of autoimmune live

Each eukaryotic cell of multicellular organisms must be able to maintain its integrity by sensing both external and internal stimuli. The primary goal of the generated response mechanism is to drive back the system to the former or to a new homeostatic state. Moreover, the response has to provide an accurate survival-or-death decision to avoid any “misunderstanding” and its unwanted consequences. New data revealed that a systems-level crosstalk of molecular networks has an essential role in achieving the correct characteristic of the response. Although many molecular components of these processes already have been revealed, several elements and regulatory connections of crosstalk are still missing. These “gaps” of the complex control networks make hardly impossible to present comprehensive models. Therefore we approach the questions from a systems biology aspect by combining the experimental results with the special technique of mathematical modelling. In this short report we discuss some novel and preliminary data gained by this approach on the crosstalk between life and death decisions under cellular stress, to get a systems biological view of these networks.

A major role of ecological risk assessment(ERA)has been to provide scientific guidance on whether a future human activity will cause ecological harm,including such activities as release of a genetically modified organism(GMO),exotic species,or chemical pollutant into the *** requires the determination of the likelihoods that the activity:would cause a harm,and would not cause a *** the first case,the focus is on demonstrating the presence of a harm and developing appropriate management to mitigate such *** is usually evaluated using standard hypothesis *** the second case,the focus is on demonstrating the absence of a harm and supporting a decision of *** most ERA researchers have focused on finding presence of harm,and some have wrongly associated the lack of detection of harm with biosafety,a novel approach in ERA would be to focus on demonstrating directly the safety of the ***,some researchers have suggested that retrospective power analysis can be used to infer absence of harm,it actually provides inaccurate information about biosafety.A decision of biosafety can only be supported in a statistically sound manner by equivalence tests,described *** a 20%ecological equivalence standard in GMO examples,we illustrated the use of equivalence tests for two-samples with normal or binomial data and multi-sample normal data,and provided a spreadsheet calculator for *** six of the eight examples,the effects of Cry toxins on a non-target organism were equivalent to a control,supporting a decision of *** examples also showed that demonstration of equivalence does not require large sample *** more relevant ecological equivalence standards should be developed to enable equivalence tests to become the main method to support biosafety decision making,we advocate their use for evaluating biosafety for non-target organisms because of their direct and accurate inference regarding safety.

Identification and deployment of high-yielding and stress-tolerant maize hybrids adapted to stress-prone agro-ecologies is important for improving the food security and livelihoods of smallholder farmers in eastern *** objectives of this study were to(i)assess the performance of maize hybrids under well-watered and drought stress conditions;(ii)evaluate grain yield stability of 65 intermediate-maturing and 55 early-maturing hybrids in 24 well-watered locations and seven drought stress locations;and(iii)identify representative and/or discriminative testing locations for increasing genetic gains for the target *** were significant differences for grain yield among early-and intermediatematuring hybrids tested under well-watered and drought stress *** the early-maturing hybrids,the top 10 hybrids produced 46.8%–73.9%and 31.2%–42.1%higher mean grain yields than the best commercial check under drought and well-watered conditions,*** the intermediate-maturing hybrids,the top 10 hybrids produced 25.2%–47.7%and 8.5%–13.5%higher grain yield than commercial checks under drought stress and well-watered conditions,respectively,suggesting improvement in the levels of drought tolerance in both early-and intermediate-maturing *** biplot analysis and a bi-segmented regression linear method identified specific early-maturing and intermediate-maturing hybrids that performed well under both well-watered and drought stress *** hybrids could be recommended for commercial production in eastern *** in Kenya was found to be the most representative and highly discriminating site among well-watered testing locations,while Kabuku in Tanzania was the least representative of test *** testing under drought stress conditions,Kiboko in Kenya was identified as the most representative *** information could be useful for allocating resources and streamlining CIMMYT maize hybrid testing in eastern Africa
