Role of glioma stem cells in promoting tumor chemo- and radioresistance: A systematic review of potential targeted treatments

Weighted composition operators and locally convex algebras

The Gleason-Kahane-Zelazko theorem characterizes the continuous homomorphism of an associative, locally multiplicatively convex, sequentially complete algebra A into the field C among all linear forms on A. This characterization will be applied along two different directions. In the case in which A is a commutative Banach algebra, the theorem yields the representation of some classes of continuous linear maps A: A → A as weighted composition operators, or as composition operators when A is a continuous algebra endomorphism. The theorem will then be applied to explore the behaviour of continuous linear forms on quasi-regular elements, when A is either the algebra of all Hilbert-Schmidt operators or a Hilbert algebra.

Recycling of reclaimed fibers from end-of-life tires in hot mix asphalt

Nowadays, the disposal of end-of-life tires(ELT) is worldwide one of the major concerns for the environment as well as for public health. Crumb rubber and steel wires, the main byproducts(in terms of weight) deriving from the ELT processing, can be recycled in several ways. However, the textile fiber, representing about 10% of the waste by weight, is typically not reused and ends up in landfills or incinerators. The present paper deals with the use of reclaimed fibers from ELT in hot mix asphalt(HMA), with the aim to improve its performance. The study included the preliminary characterization of the fiber through microscope observation and Fourier trans form infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy and then the investigation of the mechanical properties of HMA containing ELT fibers, in comparison with an ordinary HMA with no fibers. In particular, indirect tensile strength(ITS), indirect tensile stiffness modulus(ITSM), semi-circular bending(SCB), three point bending(3PB)and indirect tensile fatigue(ITF) tests were carried out. The results showed that the use of ELT fibers does not reflect in a significant improvement in terms of strength and stiffness properties. However, the ELT fibers determine a noticeable increase of the HMA resistance to fatigue, probably related to the ability of the fibers in sewing the micro-crack edges and contrasting the macro-crack opening.

Linear isometries of Hardy spaces

According to results established by DeLeeuw-Rudin-Wermer and by Forelli, all linear isometries of any Hardy space H p (p ? 1, p ≠ = 2) on the open unit disc Δ of ? are represented by weighted composition operators defined by inner functions on Δ. After reviewing (and completing when p = ∞) some of those results, the present report deals with a characterization of periodic and almost periodic semigroups of linear isometries of H p .

Applicability of tooth derived stem cells in neural regeneration

Within the nervous system, regeneration is limited, and this is due to the small amount of neural stem cells, the inhibitory origin of the stem cell niche and often to the development of a scar which constitutes a mechanical barrier for the regeneration. Regarding these aspects, many efforts have been done in the re- search of a cell component that combined with scaffolds and growth factors could be suitable for nervous regeneration in regenerative medicine approaches. Autologous mesenchymal stem cells represent nowa- days the ideal candidate for this aim, thank to their multipotency and to their amount inside adult tissues. However, issues in their harvesting, through the use of invasive techniques, and problems involved in their ageing, require the research of new autologous sources. To this purpose, the recent discovery of a stem cells component in teeth, and which derive from neural crest cells, has came to the light the possibility of using dental stem cells in nervous system regeneration. In this work, in order to give guidelines on the use of dental stem cells for neural regeneration, we briefly introduce the concepts of regeneration and regenerative medicine, we then focus the attention on odontogenesis, which involves the formation and the presence of a stem component in different parts of teeth, and finally we describe some experimental approaches which are exploiting dental stem cells for neural studies.
