The Effect of Different Chemical Agents on the Prevention of Enzymatic Browning in Banana

This study was conducted to test the concept of fresh cut banana slices with the effects of chemical treatments on the surface appearance and selected quality indexes of banana samples right after cutting and during 2-week of storage at refrigeration conditions(0-4°C).Banana slices were treated with an ascorbic acid,sodium chloride,citric acid,calcium chloride,and sodium carbonate,water(room temperature),and hot water(65°C).Quality attributes,***,PPO(polyphenol oxidase)activities,surface appearance of the cut bananas were *** slices immersed in sodium chloride,calcium chloride,citric acid and sodium ascorbate showed visual traces of browning during storage at 4°*** 14 days of storage,only ascorbic acid treated banana samples showed moderate browning,while all other treatments were severely *** was more severe for the samples immersed in water for all storage *** browning measurement(a value)became increasingly positive from first to fourteenth day *** was observed that the inactivation of PPO enzyme was achieved for the ascorbic acid treated sample *** than ascorbic acid treatment,cut banana samples showed less PPO enzyme activity for sodium chloride,citric acid,calcium chloride,sodium carbonate,hot water,and water(room temperature)treatments,*** were no significant changes observed on the different chemical treatments(sodium chloride,citric acid,calcium chloride,and sodium carbonate)except ascorbic *** overall,ascorbic acid was found to be the most efficient treatment on the inactivation of PPO enzyme activity among all the *** the inactivation of the enzyme,ascorbic acid showed a better success to prevent color degradation of *** study showed that ascorbic acid treatment is an effective chemical agent on the inactivation of browning enzymes.

Nigella sativa relieves the deleterious effects of ischemia reperfusion injury on liver

AIM: To determine whether Nigella sativa prevents hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury to the liver. METHODS: Thirty rats were divided into three groups as sham (Group 1), control (Group 2), and Nigella sati-va (NS) treatment group (Group 3). All rats underwent hepatic ischemia for 45 min followed by 60 min period of reperfusion. Rats were intraperitoneally infused with only 0.9% saline solution in group 2. Rats in group 3 received NS (0.2 mL/kg) intraperitoneally, before isch-emia and before reperfusion. Blood samples and liver tissues were harvested from the rats, and then the rats were sacrifi ced. Serum aspartate aminotransfera-se (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels were determined. Total antioxidant capacity (TAC), catalase (CAT), total oxida-tive status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI) and my-eloperoxidase (MPO) in hepatic tissue were measured. Also liver tissue histopathology was evaluated by light microscopy. RESULTS: The levels of liver enzymes in group 3 weresignifi cantly lower than those in the group 2. TAC in liver tissue was significantly higher in group 3 than in group 2. TOS, OSI and MPO in hepatic tissue were signifi cantly lower in group 3 than the group 2. Histo-logical tissue damage was milder in the NS treatment group than that in the control group. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that Nigella sa-tiva treatment protects the rat liver against to hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury.

An enantioselective umpolung γ-addition reaction of 3’-indolyl-3-oxindoles to allenoates catalyzed by amino acid-derived bifunctional phosphine catalysts has been developed. A wide range of chiral mixed 3,3’-bisindole scaffolds containing an all-carbon quaternary stereogenic center were obtained in high yields and with excellent enantioselectivities. 3,3’-Bisindoles are valuable synthetic intermediates, the employment of which led to formal total syntheses of(+)-Chimonanthine,(+)-Folicanthine and(-)-Calycanthine, as well as facile creation of useful pyrrolidinoindoline core structure.

Voltage gated calcium channel antibody-related neurological diseases

Voltage gated calcium channel(VGCC) antibodies are generally associated with Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome. However the presence of this antibody has been associated with paraneoplastic as well as nonparaneoplastic cerebellar degeneration. Most patients with VGCC-antibody-positivity have small cell lung cancer(SCLC). Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome(LEMS)is an autoimmune disease of the presynaptic part of the neuromuscular junction. Its classical clinical triadis proximal muscle weakness, areflexia and autonomic dysfunction. Fifty to sixty percent of LEMS patients have a neoplasia, usually SCLC. The co-occurrence of SCLC and LEMS causes more severe and progressive disease and shorter survival than non-paraneoplastic LEMS. Treatment includes 3,4 diaminopyridine for symptomatic purposes and immunotherapy with prednisolone, azathioprine or intravenous immunoglobulin in patients unresponsive to 3,4 diaminopyridine. Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration(PCD) is a syndrome characterized with severe, subacute pancerebellar dysfunction. Serum is positive for VGCC antibody in 41%-44% of patients, usually with the co-occurrence of SCLC. Clinical and electrophysiological features of LEMS are also present in 20%-40% of these patients. Unfortunately, PCD symptoms do not improve with immunotherapy. The role of VGCC antibody in the immunopathogenesis of LEMS is well known whereas its role in PCD is still unclear. All patients presenting with LEMS or PCD must be investigated for SCLC.

Nonlinear buckling finite element analysis of stiffened B-Al plates

Nonlinear buckling behavior of stiffened composite B-Al plates was analyzed by means of finite element analysis(FEA) method. In the method, the composite material was taken as B matrix into which Al fibers were embedded in different configurations. The laminated B-Al material in the form of rectangular plates was subjected to lateral compressive loading. It is observed that stiffeners have significant effect on the buckling behavior of plates under compressive loading and for various geometrical configurations. The stiffeners used in the modeling are one-sided and have rectangular cross-sections. It is found that there are physically important loading intervals and the critical buckling modes make transitions back and forth between stable and unstable states. Bifurcation buckling regions resulting from various configurations of fiber orientations and different plate aspect ratios are determined. The whole analysis is performed by using ANSYS finite element computations. Only the buckling patterns of stiffened plate configurations under simply supported boundary conditions are studied. Distributions of compressive stresses(σx) vs in-plane contractions(u) and compressive stresses(σx) vs out-of plane deflections(δ) are obtained. Nonlinear analysis of the C2 fiber configuration yields the safest critical buckling stress amongst C1, C2, C3 and C4 configurations. It is concluded that FEA method for the nonlinear buckling analysis generates accurate results.

AIM:To identify whether there could have been changes in survival if lymph node ratio (N ratio) had been ***:We assessed 334 gastric adenocarcinoma cases retrospectively between 2001 and *** hundred and sixteen patients out of 334 were included in the *** were grouped according to disection1 (D1) or dissection 2 (D2) *** compared the estimated survival and actual survival determined by Pathologic nodes (pN) class and N ratio,and SPSS 15.0 software was used for statistical ***:Ninety-six (44.4%) patients underwent D1 dissection and 120 (55.6%) had D2 *** groups were evaluated,23 (24.0%) patients in D1 and 21 (17.5%) in D2 had stage migration (P=0.001).When both D1 and D2 groups were evaluated for number of pathological lymph nodes,despite the fact that there was no difference in N ratio between D1 and D2 groups,a statistically significant difference was found between them with regard to pN1 and pN2 groups (P=0.047,P=0.044 respectively).In D1,pN0 had the longest survival while pN3 had the *** D2,pN0 had the longest survival whereas pN3 had the shortest ***:N ratio is an accurate staging system for defining prognosis and treatment plan,thus decreasing methodological errors in gastric cancer staging.

Resection and primary anastomosis with or without modified blow-hole colostomy for sigmoid volvulus

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) and RPA with modified blow-hole colostomy for sigmoid volvulus. METHODS: From March 2000 to September 2007, 77 patients with acute sigmoid volvulus were treated. A total of 47 patients underwent RPA or RPA with modified blow-hole colostomy. Twenty-five patients received RPA (Group A), and the remaining 22 patients had RPA with modified blow-hole colostomy (Group B). The clinical course and postoperative complications of the two groups were compared. RESULTS: The mean hospital stay, wound infection and mortality did not differ significantly between the groups. Superficial wound infection rate was higher in group A (32% vs 9.1%). Anastomotic leakage was observed only in group A, with a rate of 6.3%. The difference was numerically impressive but was statistically not significant. CONCLUSION: RPA with modified blow-hole colostomy provides satisfactory results. It is easy to perform and may become a method of choice in patients with sigmoid volvulus. Further studies are required to further establish its role in the treatment of sigmoid volvulus.
