Body awareness therapy: A new strategy for relief of symptoms in irritable bowel syndrome patients

AIM: To compare irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) pa- tients with apparently healthy persons and to evaluate body awareness therapy, which is a physiotherapeutic remedy focusing on normalising tensions in the body, for the treatment of IBS with the hypothesis that altered body tension is associated with the syndrome. METHODS: Twenty-one IBS patients received body awareness therapy two hours weekly for 24 wk. At base- line as well as after 12 and 24 wk, they underwent ex- aminations including resource oriented body examination in combination with body awareness scale evaluation and f illed in gastrointestinal and psychological symptom questionnaires. Saliva cortisol was analysed. A group of 21 apparently healthy persons underwent the same ex- aminations once. RESULTS: Compared to the apparently healthy group, IBS patients scored higher at baseline for gastrointestinal and psychological symptoms. They showed more often alterations in normal body tension patterns, as well as deviating cortisol slopes in saliva. After 24 wk of body awareness therapy, their gastrointestinal and psychologi- cal symptoms were reduced overall. Somatic symptoms decreased in parallel with depressive symptoms. Whole body pain score decreased, coping ability as well as bio- chemical stress markers improved. CONCLUSION: IBS patients scored higher for gastroin- testinal and psychological symptoms, and presented with altered biochemical stress markers. Their body tension deviated compared to healthy controls. Furthermore,body awareness therapy gave relief of both somatic com- plaints, psychological symptoms and normalised body tension. These findings indicate that distorted tension constitutes an important part of the symptoms in IBS.

Extrapolation-Based Acceleration of Iterative Solvers:Application to Simulation of 3D Flows

A Scalable Domain Decomposition Method for Ultra-Parallel Arterial Flow Simulations

Efficient and Accurate Numerical Methods Using the Accelerated Spectral Deferred Correction for Solving Fractional Differential Equations

We develop an efficient and accurate spectral deferred correction(SDC)method for fractional differential equations(FDEs)by extending the algorithm in[14]for classical ordinary differential equations(ODEs).Specifically,we discretize the resulted Picard integral equation by the SDC method and accelerate the convergence of the SDC iteration by using the generalized minimal residual algorithm(GMRES).We first derive the correction matrix of the SDC method for FDEs and analyze the convergence region of the SDC *** then present several numerical examples for stiff and non-stiff FDEs including fractional linear and nonlinear ODEs as well as fractional phase field models,demonstrating that the accelerated SDC method is much more efficient than the original SDC method,especially for stiff ***,we resolve the issue of low accuracy arising from the singularity of the solutions by using a geometric mesh,leading to highly accurate solutions compared to uniform mesh solutions at almost the same computational ***,for long-time integration of FDEs,using the geometric mesh leads to great computational savings as the total number of degrees of freedom required is relatively small.

Predicting the aquatic risk of realistic pesticide mixtures to species assemblages in Portuguese river basins

Although pesticide regulatory tools are mainly based on individual substances, aquatic ecosystems are usually exposed to multiple pesticides from their use on the variety of crops within the catchment of a river. This study estimated the impact of measured pesticide mixtures in surface waters from 2002 and 2008 within three important Portuguese river basins（＇Mondego＇, ＇Sado＇ and ＇Tejo＇） on primary producers, arthropods and fish by toxic pressure calculation. Species sensitivity distributions（SSDs）, in combination with mixture toxicity models, were applied. Considering the differences in the responses of the taxonomic groups as well as in the pesticide exposures that these organisms experience, variable acute multi-substance potentially affected fractions（ms PAFs） were obtained. The median msP AF for primary producers and arthropods in surface waters of all river basins exceeded 5%, the cut-off value used in the prospective SSD approach for deriving individual environmental quality standards. A ranking procedure identified various photosystem II inhibiting herbicides, with oxadiazon having the relatively largest toxic effects on primary producers, while the organophosphorus insecticides, chlorfenvinphos and chlorpyrifos, and the organochloride endosulfan had the largest effects on arthropods and fish, respectively. These results ensure compliance with European legislation with regard to ecological risk assessment and management of pesticides in surface waters.

Error Control in Multi-Element Generalized Polynomial Chaos Method for Elliptic Problems with Random Coefficients

Despite the significant progress over the last 50 years in simulating flow problems using numerical discretization of the Navier–Stokes equations(NSE),we still cannot incorporate seamlessly noisy data into existing algorithms,mesh-generation is complex,and we cannot tackle high-dimensional problems governed by parametrized ***,solving inverse flow problems is often prohibitively expensive and requires complex and expensive formulations and new computer ***,we review flow physics-informed learning,integrating seamlessly data and mathematical models,and implement them using physics-informed neural networks(PINNs).We demonstrate the effectiveness of PINNs for inverse problems related to three-dimensional wake flows,supersonic flows,and biomedical flows.

Population viability analysis: using a modeling tool to assess the viability of tapir populations in fragmented landscapes

A population viability analysis(PVA)was conducted of the lowland tapir populations in the Atlantic Forest of the Pontal do Paranapanema region,Brazil,including Morro do Diabo State Park(MDSP)and surrounding forest *** from the model projected that the population of 126 tapirs in MDSP is likely to per-sist over the next 100 years;however,200 tapirs would be required to maintain a viable ***-ity analysis showed that sub-adult mortality and adult mortality have the strongest influence on the dynamics of lowland tapir *** road-kill has a major impact on the MDSP tapir population and can lead to population *** modeling showed that dispersal of tapirs from MDSP to the surrounding fragments can be detrimental to the overall metapopulation,as fragments act as ***,the model showed that under certain conditions the maintenance of the metapopulation dynamics might be determinant for the persistence of tapirs in the region,particularly in the smaller *** establishment of corridors con-necting MDSP to the forest fragments models resulted in an increase in the stochastic growth rate,making ta-pirs more resilient to threats and catastrophes,but only if rates of mortality were not increased when using *** PVA showed that the conservation of tapirs in the Pontal region depends on:the effective protection of MDSP;maintenance and,whenever possible,enhancement of the functional connectivity of the landscape,reducing mortality during dispersal and threats in the unprotected forest fragments;and neutralization of all threats affecting tapirs in the smaller forest fragments.

Analytical and Computational Studies of Correlations of Hydrodynamic Fluctuations in Shear Flow

We study correlations of hydrodynamic fluctuations in shear flow analytically and also by dissipative particle dynamics(DPD)*** hydrodynamic equations are linearized around the macroscopic velocity field and then solved by a perturbation method in Fourier-transformed *** autocorrelation functions(ACFs)fromthe analyticalmethod are comparedwith results obtained fromDPD simulations under the same shear-flow *** to a moderate shear rate,various ACFs from the two approaches agree with each other *** large shear rates,discrepancies between the two methods are observed,hence revealing strong additional coupling between different fluctuating variables,which is not considered in the analytical *** addition,the results at low and moderate shear rates can serve as benchmarks for developing multiscale algorithms for coupling of heterogeneous solvers,such as a hybrid simulation of molecular dynamics and fluctuating hydrodynamics solver,where thermal fluctuations are indispensable.
