Cisplatin, a platinum-based chemotherapeutic drug, has been used for over 30 years in a wide variety of cancers with varying degrees of success. In particular, cisplatin has been used to treat late stage non-small cell lung cancer （NSCLC） as the standard of care. However, therapeutic outcomes vary from patient to patient. Considerable efforts have been invested to identify biomark- ers that can be used to predict cisplatin sensitivity in NSCLC. Here we reviewed current evidence for cisplatin sensitivity biomarkers in NSCLC. We focused on several key pathways, including nucleotide excision repair, drug transport and metabolism. Both expression and germline DNA variation were evaluated in these key pathways. Current evidence suggests that cisplatin-based treatment could be improved by the use of these biomarkers.

This paper examines the impact of fiscal residuum--the excess of expenditure benefits over tax burdens--on the location choice of foreign direct investments among China＇s provinces. Using data provided by the National Bureau of Statistics of China we propose two fiscal residuum indexes for China＇s provinces over the period 1998-2004. According to Buchanan＇s original definition of fiscal residuum a first index is given by the difference between government expenditure and revenue. A second index measures enterprises＇ net fiscal benefit and is calculated as the difference between public expenditure that affect business activities and taxes paid by enterprises. We found that the first index does not significantly affect the FDI localization choice while the second one positively affects it. When looking at different subsets of provinces we found that for eastern provinces the first index has a positive and significant effect. These results confirm the role of the net fiscal benefit as a determinant of FDI inflows at the provincial level.

Despite considerable advances in synthesizing high-quality core/shell upconversion(UC)nanocrystals(NC;UCNC)and UCNC photophysics,the application of near-infrared(NIR)-excitable lanthanide-doped UCNC in the life and material sciences is still hampered by the relatively low upconversion luminescence(UCL)of UCNC of small size or thin protecting *** obtain deeper insights into energy transfer and surface quenching processes involving Yb^(3+) and Er^(3+) ions,we examined energy loss processes in differently sized solid core NaYF_(4) nanocrystals doped with either Yb^(3+)(YbNC;20%Yb^(3+))or Er^(3+)(ErNC;2%Er^(3+))and co-doped with Yb^(3+) and Er^(3+)(YbErNC;20%Yb^(3+) and 2%Er^(3+))without a surface protection shell and coated with a thin and a thick NaYF_(4) shell in comparison to single and co-doped bulk *** studies at 375 nm excitation demonstrate back-energy transfer(BET)from the ^(4)G_(11/2) state of Er^(3+) to the ^(2)F_(5/2) state of Yb^(3+),through which the red Er^(3+) ^(4)F_(9/2) state is efficiently *** power density(P)-dependent steady state and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements at different excitation and emission wavelengths enable to separate surface-related and volume-related effects for two-photonic and three-photonic processes involved in UCL and indicate a different influence of surface passivation on the green and red Er3+*** intensity and lifetime of the latter respond particularly to an increase in volume of the active UCNC *** provide a three-dimensional random walk model to describe these effects that can be used in the future to predict the UCL behavior of UCNC.

The objective was to evaluate the pure-tone audiogram-based screening protocols in VS *** retrospectively analyzed presenting symptoms,pure tone audiometry and MRI finding from 246 VS patients and 442 controls were collected to test screening protocols(AAO-HNS,AMCLASS-A/B,Charing Cross,Cueva,DOH,Nashville,Oxford,Rule3000,Schlauch,Seattle,Sunderland)for sensitivity and *** were pooled with data from five other studies,and analysis of sensitivity,specificity and positive likelihood ratio(LR+)for each protocol was *** results show that protocols with significantly higher sensitivity(AMCLASS-A/B,Nashville)show also significantly lowest specificity,and tend to have low association(positive likelihood ratio,LR+)to the *** highest LR+was found for protocols AAO-HNS,Rule3000 and *** conclusions,knowing their properties,screening protocols are simple decision-making tools in VS *** use the advantage of the highest sensitivity,protocols AMCLASS-A+B or Nashville can be of *** more reasonable approach,applying the protocols with high LR+(AAO-HNS,Rule3000,Seattle)may reduce the overall number of MRI scans at expense of only few primarily undiagnosed VS.

As more information is gathered on the mechanisms of transcription and translation, it is becoming apparent that these processes are highly regulated. The formation of mRNA secondary and tertiary structures is one such regulatory process that until recently it has not been analysed in depth. Formation of these mRNA structures has the potential to enhance and inhibit alternative splicing of transcripts, and regulate rates and amount of translation. As this regulatory mechanism potentially impacts at both the transcriptional and translational level, while also potentially utilising the vast array of non-coding RNAs, it warrants further investigation. Currently, a variety of high- throughput sequencing techniques including parallel analysis of RNA structure （PARS）, fragmentation sequencing （FragSeq） and selective 2-hydroxyl acylation analysed by primer extension （SHAPE） lead the way in the genome-wide identification and analysis of mRNA structure formation. These new sequencing techniques highlight the diversity and complexity of the transcriptome, and demonstrate another regulatory mechanism that could become a target for new therapeutic approaches.

In this study,the microstructure and mechanical properties of a multi-layered 316L-TiC composite material produced by selective laser melting(SLM)additive manufacturing process are *** different layers,consisting of 316L stainless steel,316L-5 wt%TiC and 316L-10 wt%TiC,were additively *** microstructure of these layers was characterized by optical microscopy(OM)and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).X-ray diffraction(XRD)was used for phase analysis,and the mechanical properties were evaluated by tensile and nanoindentation *** microstructural observations show epitaxial grain growth within the composite layers,with the elongated grains growing predominantly in the build *** analysis confirms the successful incorporation of the TiC particles into the 316L matrix,with no unwanted phases *** results indicate a significant increase in the hardness and modulus of elasticity of the composite layers compared to pure 316L stainless steel,suggesting improved mechanical *** tests show remarkable strength values for the 316L-TiC composite samples,which can be attributed to the embedded TiC *** results highlight the potential of SLM in the production of multi-layer metal-ceramic composites for applications that require high strength and ductility of metallic components in addition to the exceptional hardness of the ceramic particles.
