A Review of NILM Applications with Machine Learning Approaches

In recent years,Non-Intrusive LoadMonitoring (NILM) has become an emerging approach that provides affordableenergy management solutions using aggregated load obtained from a single smart meter in the power ***, by integrating Machine Learning (ML), NILM can efficiently use electrical energy and offer less ofa burden for the energy monitoring process. However, conducted research works have limitations for real-timeimplementation due to the practical issues. This paper aims to identify the contribution of ML approaches todeveloping a reliable energy Management (eM) solution with NILM. Firstly, phases of the NILM are discussed,along with the research works that have been conducted in the domain. Secondly, the contribution of machinelearning approaches in three aspects is discussed: Supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and *** highlights the limitations in the applicability of ML approaches in the field. Then, the challenges in the realtimeimplementation are concerned with six use cases: Difficulty in recognizing multiple loads at a given time,cost of running the NILM system, lack of universal framework for appliance detection, anomaly detection andnew appliance identification, and complexity of the electricity loads and real-time demand side ***, options for selecting an approach for an efficientNILMframework are suggested. Finally, suggestionsare provided for future research directions.

In recent years there is a growing importance in using machine learning techniques to improve procedures in precision agriculture:in this work we perform a study on models capable of predicting oenological parameters from hyperspectral images of wine grape berries,a specially relevant topic to boost production tasks for ***,we explore the capabilities of a novel technique mostly used for visualization,t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor embedding(t-SNe),for reducing the dimensionality of the highly complex hyperspectral data and compare its performance with principal Component Analysis(pCA)method,which despite the introduction of many nonlinear dimensionality reduction techniques over the years,had achieved the best results for real-world data across several studies in *** we explore the potential of Kernel t-SNe,an extension to the t-SNe method that allows for the usage of the technique in streaming data or online *** results show that,in a direct comparison,t-SNe achieves better metrics than pCA for most of the data sets in this work and that the regressor(Support Vector Regression,SVR)performs better with the t-SNe reduced features as inputs,accomplishing better predictions with lower error *** the results with current literature,our shallow learning model paired with t-SNe achieves either better or on par results than those reported,even competing with more advanced models that use deep learning techniques,which should propel the introduction of t-SNe in more studies that require dimensionality reduction.

The autonomous vehicle(AV)technology has the potential to significantly improve safety and efficiency of the transportation and logistics ***-scale AV testing is limited by time,space,and cost,while simulation-based testing often lacks the necessary accuracy of AV and environmental *** recent years,several initiatives have emerged to test autonomous software and hardware on scaled *** systematic literature review provides an overview of the literature surrounding small-scale self-driving cars,summarizing the current autonomous platforms deployed and focusing on the software and hardware developments in this *** studies published in english-language journals or conference papers that present small-scale testing of self-driving cars were *** of Science,Scopus,Springer Link,Wiley,ACM Digital Library,and TRID databases were used for the literature *** systematic literature search found 38 eligible *** gaps in the reviewed papers were identified to provide guidance for future *** key takeaway emerging from this manuscript are:(i)there is a need to improve the models and neural network architectures used in autonomous driving systems,as most papers present only preliminary results;(ii)increasing datasets and sharing databases can help in developing more reliable control policies and reducing bias and variance in the training process;(iii)small-scaled vehicles to ensure safety is a major benefit,and incorporating data about unsafe driving behaviors and infrastructure problems can improve the accuracy of predictive models.

Cerebral pericytes are perivascular cells that stabilize blood vessels. Little is known about the plasticity of pericytes in the adult brain in vivo. Recently, using stateof-the-art technologies, including two-photon microscopy in combination with sophisticated Cre/loxp in vivo tracing techniques, a novel role of pericytes was revealed in vascular remodeling in the adult brain. Strikingly, after pericyte ablation, neighboring pericytes expand their processes and prevent vascular dilatation. This new knowledge provides insights into pericyte plasticity in the adult brain.

A comprehensive understanding of the complex biogeochemical interactions between organic matter and persistent contaminants in the suspended matter is vital for ecoefficient estuary ***,little is known regarding aeration effects in suspended particulate ***,this study aimed to investigate the effects of aeration on the suspended matter from a Tropical and eutrophic estuarine *** water with 60 g/L of suspended particulate matter(SpM)was collected from Guanabara Bay,Rio de Janeiro,Brazil,transferred to experimental boxes and aerated for 61 *** aggregates monitoring included abiotic variables measurements and,determination of total organic matter(TOM),biopolymers composition,bacterial activity,trace metals,and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(pAHs)*** aeration enhanced dissolved oxygen(DO)concentration and the redox potential(eh).However,from days 0 to 61 the predominant bacterial activities were denitrification and *** transport system activity increased after day 10,and aerobic activity was detected after day *** summary,aeration increased aerobic bacterial activity,lipids(LIp)and trace metal concentrations,although diminished protein/carbohydrate ratio and pAH *** metals concentration(Ni,pb,Cu,Cr,Mn,and Fe)were the highest on day 19 when the p H was *** presented toxic values(Cu>20.0μg/g).The p H showed a strong negative correlation with eh(r=-0.94;penvironment(p H≤5.9)in marine ecosystems with high loads of toxic trace metals is unsafe for ***,managers must be aware of the environmental and biological risks of introducing the aeration technique into a eutrophic marine environment.
