Hearing sensitivity change was investigated when a warning sound preceded a loud sound in the false killer whale(Pseudorca crassidens),the bottlenose dolphin(Tursiops truncatus),the beluga whale(Delphinaperus leucas)and the harbor porpoise(Phocoena phocoena).Hearing sensitivity was measured using pip-train test stimuli and auditory evoked potential recording.When the test/warning stimuli preceded a loud sound,hearing thresholds before the loud sound increased relative to the baseline by 13 to 17 dB.experiments with multiple frequencies of exposure and shift provided evidence of different amounts of hearing change depending on frequency,indicating that the hearing sensation level changes were not likely due to a simple stapedial reflex.

Iron deficiency (ID), defined as an insufficient supply of iron to the cells of the body after iron reserves have been exhausted, is the most prevalent single nutritional deficiency, affecting over 2, 000 million people, mostly in the developing world. Infants, small children, adolescents and pregnant and fertile-age women are most vulnerable. Only about 50 % of people with ID develop iron deficiency anemia (IDA), since this is a late manifes tation of chronic ID. Based on the average daily iron requirement and on the rate of iron reutilization from red cell hemoglobin destruction, it can be estimated that after iron stores have been depleted, it takes about 4 months of ID erythropoiesis for adult women to have a drop in hemoglobin concentration [Hb] of 10 g/l, if the iron intake is only 70 % of requirement. IDA can be defined by a [Hb] below an appropriate cut-off point for age,sex, physiological condition and altitude above sea level, or by a [Hb] increment of morethan 10 g/l to the administration of adequate doses of iron. More than 85 % of the nutritional anemias are IDA alone, or of iron combined with folate or other nutrient deficiencies [WHO/UNICeF/UNU, 1997; Yip, 1994].

The influence of poly（methylmethacrylate-co-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone）, P（MMA-co-VP）, on corrosion of carbon steels（J55, N80, P110 SS and C110 steels） in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution saturated with CO2 was evaluated using static high pressure and high temperature（HPHT） autoclave. The surface was further evaluated by X-ray diffraction（XRD）, scanning electron microscopy（SeM） and contact angle measurements. Quantum chemical calculations have been used to evaluate the structural, electronic and reactivity parameters of the inhibitor on the steels surface. SeM, XRD and contact angle measurement studies reveal that the surface of metals are quite unaffected after use of inhibitor in 3.5% NaCl solution saturated with CO2.

Tramadol is a potent analgesic.However,the analgesia efficacy of tramadol,particularly its minimum effective dose(MeD),is not clear.The aim of this study is to find MeD of tramadol for postoperative analgesia in infants.The continual reassessment method(CRM)was performed to find MeD.Infants undergoing surgeries were included in the 3 phases of this series.In each phase,24 participants were allocated a different tramadol dose.Pain intensity was measured by face,legs,activity,cry,consolability(FLACC)measurement at 3-hour intervals.Tramadol was considered ineffective if the FLACC score was higher than 4 in 10 at anytime.In phase 1,seven dose levels were used within the range 0.1-0.4 mg·kg^(-1)·h^(-1).Phase 1 was insufficient to identify the MeD,and we increased the dose to 0.4-0.8 mg·kg^(-1)·h^(-1) in phase 2.Phase 2 was insufficient to identify the MeD.In phase 3,local anesthetic wound infiltration was introduced,and the tramadol dose levels tested were the same as in phase 1.The successful analgesia probability of tramadol 0.4 mg·kg^(-1)·h^(-1) was 82.1%(95%CI,0.742-0.925)in phase 1.In phase 2,it was 84.7%(95%CI,0.789-0.991)with the dose 0.8 mg·kg^(-1)·h^(-1).Phase 1 and phase 2 were insufficient to identify the MeD.In phase 3,the successful analgesia probability for dose 0.35 mg·kg^(-1)·h^(-1) was 96.7%(95%CI,0.853-0.997).We have demonstrated that tramadol provides insufficient analgesia for surgeries considered to cause moderate-to-severe postoperative pain in infants if used as the sole analgesic,and that local anesthetic wound infiltration enhances the efficacy of tramadol.

Crystal structure, magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effects （MCe） of La1-xBixFe1 1.4Si1.6 （x=0.0 and 0.1） compounds were investigated by X-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements. The La1-xBixFe11.4Si1.6 compounds presented a cubic NaZnx3 type structure. First, the magnetization behavior and the magnetic transition were analyzed in terms of Landau theory. Then, Bi substitution for La in La1-xBixFe11.4Si1.6 compounds led to a decrease in magnetic entropy change （-△SM^max） but an increase in Curie temperature （Tc） significantly. The significant increase of Tc by Bi substitution from 202.5 to 256 K for x=0.0 and x=0.1 respectively was attributed to an increase in the Fe-Fe exchange interactions. Moreover, magnetocaloric effect was calculated in terms of isothermal magnetic entropy change. The maximum values of （-△SM^max ） of La1-xBixFe11.4Si1.6 for x=-0.0 and 0.1 compounds were found to be, respectively, 22.56 and 4.36 J/（kg.K） under an applied magnetic field change of 5 T. For the same applied magnetic field （μ0H=5 T）, the relative cooling power （RCP） values were found to vary between 487 and 296 J/kg.

Rapid advances in nanomedicine have significantly changed many aspects of nanoparticle application to the eye including areas of diagnosis, imaging and more importantly drug delivery. The nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems has provided a solution to various drug solubility-related problems in ophthalmology treatment. Nanostructured compounds could be used to achieve local ocular delivery with minimal unwanted systematic side effects produced by taking advantage of the phagocyte system. In addition, the in vivo control release by nanomaterials encapsulated drugs provides prolong exposure of the compound in the body. Furthermore, certain nanoparticles can overcome important body barriers including the blood-retinal barrier as well as the corneal-retinal barrier of the eye for effective delivery of the drug. In summary, the nanotechnology based drug delivery system may serve as an important tool for uveal melanoma treatment.

Market drugs,suchas Foodand Drug Administration(FDA)or european Medicines Agency(eMA)-approved drugs for specific indications provide opportunities for repurposing for newer therapeutics.This potentially saves resources invested in clinical trials that verify drug safety and tolerance in humans prior to alternative indication approval.Protein arginine methyltransferase 5(PRMT5)overexpression has been linked to promoting the tumor phenotype in several cancers,including pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC),colorectal cancer(CRC),and breast cancer(BC),making PRMT5 an important target for cancer therapy.Previously,we showed that PRMT5-mediated methylation of the nuclear factor(NF)-kB,partially contributes to its constitutive activation observed in cancers.In this study,we utilized an AlphaLiSA-based high-throughput screening method adapted in our lab,and identified one FDA-approved drug,Candesartan cilexetil(Can,used in hypertension treatment)and one eMA-approved drug,Cloperastine hydrochloride(Clo,used in cough treatment)that had significant PRMT5-inhibitory activity,and their anti-tumor properties were validated using cancer phenotypic assays in vitro.Furthermore,PRMT5 selective inhibition of methyltransferase activity was confirmed by reduction of both NF-kB methylation and its subsequent activation upon drug treatment.Using in silico prediction,we identified critical residues on PRMT5 targeted by these drugs that may interfere with its enzymatic activity.Finally,Clo and Can treatment have exhibited marked reduction in tumor growth in vivo.Overall,we provide basis for pursuing repurposing Clo and Can as anti-PRMT5 cancer therapies.Our study offers potential safe and fast repurposing of previously unknown PRMT5 inhibitors into clinical practice.

Yield and quality responses of citrus (Citrus reticulate) and tea (Podocarpus fleuryi Hickel.) to compound fertilizers

experiments were carried out with citrus (Citrus reticulate) and tea (Podocarpus fleuryi Hickel.) to study the effects of compound fertilizers on their yields and quality. In the citrus experiment, application of compound fertilizers increased available P, K and Mg contents in soil but decreased alkali-hydrolyzable N contents in soil and N, P and K contents in leaves. In the tea ex- periment, application of compound fertilizers increased available P, K and Mg contents in soil and N, P, K and Mg contents in leaves but decreased alkali-hydrolyzable N in soil compared with the urea treatment. Application of compound fertilizers could improve the quality of citrus and tea, increase their yields and enhance their economical profits significantly. Compared with the control, application of compound fertilizers increased citrus yields by 6.31, 12.94 and 17.69 t/ha, and those of tea by 0.51, 0.86 and 1.30 t/ha, respectively. Correspondingly, profits were increased by 21.4% to 61.1% for citrus and by 10.0% to 15.7% for tea. Optimal rates of compound fertilizers were recommended for both crops.
