As urban populations increase worldwide and more demands are placed on infrastructure and buildings,the topic of adaptable building design has experienced increased interest as a way to embed adaptability into the urban building stock and avoid unnecessary demolition and *** tools for judging building adaptability based on physical characteristics have recently been *** most common approach for these tools is to use a weighted-sum of scores for different *** primary purpose of this paper was to compare a weighted-sum measurement approach against a more rigorous,less abstract measurement that involved judgements about simulated adaptation projects(called an example-based approach).These measurements were performed through expert elicitation and an analytic hierarchy process(AHP)survey,where participants evaluated the relative adaptability of four case study buildings from the Clemson University *** results showed significant correlation between the weighted-sum approach and the example-based approach,supporting the reasonableness of using weighted-sum approaches to evaluate the adaptive potential of building *** addition,a separate group of experts rated adaptability of the case study buildings by providing qualitative reasons for their *** the other approaches,this group was not given a specific tool to guide their *** qualitative data provided additional context for understanding results from the quantitative approaches.

Programmed cell death （PCD） is an important and universal process regulating precise death of unwanted cells in eukaryotes. In plants, the existence of PCD has been firmly established for about a decade, and many components shown to be involved in apoptosis/PCD in mammalian systems are found in plant cells undergoing PCD. Here, we review work from our lab demonstrating the involvement of PCD in the self-incompatibility response in Papaver rhoeas pollen. This utilization of PCD as a consequence of a specific pollen-pistil interaction provides a very neat way to destroy unwanted ＇self＇, but not ＇non-self＇ pollen. We discuss recent data providing evidence for SI-induced activation of several caspase-like activities and suggest that an acidification of the cytosol may be a key turning point in the activation of caspase-like proteases executing PCD. We also review data showing the involvement of the actin and microtubule cytoskeletons as well as that of a MAPK in signalling to caspase-mediated PCD. Potential links between these various components in signalling to PCD are discussed. Together, this begins to build a picture of PCD in a single cell system, triggered by a receptor-ligand interaction.

We define a generalization of Mackey first countability and prove that it is equivalent to being docile. A consequence of the main result is to give a partial affirmative answer to an old question of Mackey regarding arbitrary quotients of Mackey first countable spaces. Some applications of the main result to spaces such as inductive limits are also given.

Males and females have conflicting interests on the frequency and outcomes of mating *** maximize their fitness by mating with as many females as possible,whereas choosy females often reduce receptivity following *** male mating tactics can be adaptive in their expression to a variety of mating contexts,including interactions with a relatively unreceptive mated *** Rabidosa punctulata wolf spiders can adopt distinctive mating tactics when interacting with a female,a complex courtship display,and/or a more coercive direct mount tactic that often involves grappling with females for *** this study,we set up female mating treatments with initial trials and then paired mated and unmated females with males to observe both female remating frequencies and the male mating tactics used during the *** adopted different mating tactics depending on the mating status of the female they were paired *** were more likely to adopt a direct mount tactic with already-mated females and courtship with unmated ***-mated females were considerably less receptive to males during experimental trials,although they did remate 34%of the time,the majority of which were with males using a direct mount *** males adjusting to these contextual cues were able to gain more copulations,the observation of multiple mating in female *** introduces the potential for sperm *** discuss this sexual conflict in terms of the fitness consequences of these mating outcomes for both males and females.

Kinetic analysis of removal of three rare earth elements metals, Ce, Sm, and Ybions from aqueous solutions in a continuous flow fixed bed reactor using Dowex 50 W-X8 ion-exchange resin was conducted. The performance of the fixed bed sorption was evaluated using the concept of the sorption breakthrough process. Parameters characteristic of a fixed bed sorption such as breakthrough times,saturation times, critical reactor lengths, and lengths of mass transfer zone were inferred from the metal ion concentration breakthrough curves. The sorption capacity of Dowex 50 W-X8 ion-exchange resin for Ce3+, Sm3+, and Yb3+ are 191, 252, and 294 mg/g, respectively. The sorption kinetics were evaluated using a zero-order, first-order and second-order reaction models. The kinetics of the sorption process follows a zero-order model which has not been reported before. The rate constants of sorption using the zero-order kinetic model are obtained. Two different analysis were conducted to identify whether the diffusion is intraparticle or film diffusion. Both analysis confirms that the film diffusion is the controlling mechanism in reactor bed.

Leaf senescence is a complex phenomenon occurring in all plant species, but it is still poorly understood in plants grown in Mediterranean field conditions and well-adapted to harsh climatic conditions. To better understand the physiological processes underlying leaf senescence in mastic trees （Pistacia lentiscus L.）, we evaluated leaf growth, water and N content, photosystem II （PSII） photochemistry, lipid peroxidation and levels of photosynthetic pigments, antioxidants, abscisic acid, and salicylic acid and jasmonic acid during the complete leaf lifespan, from early expansion to late senescence in relation to natural climatic conditions in the field. While mature leaves suffered from water and N deficit during late spring and summer, both young （emerging） and old （senescing） leaves were most sensitive to photo- oxidative stress, as indicated by reductions in the Fv/Fm ratio and enhanced lipid peroxidation during late autumn and winter. Reductions in the FvlFm ratio were associated with low ^-tocopherol （vitamin e） levels, while very old, senescing leaves additionally showed severe anthocyanin losses. We have concluded that both young （emerging） and old （senescing） leaves suffer oxidative stress in mastic trees, which may be linked in part to suboptimal temperatures during late autumn and winter as well as to low vitamin e levels.

The New Caledonia ophiolite(Peridotite Nappe)consists primarily of harzburgites,locally overlain by mafic-ultramafic cumulates,and minor spinel and plagioclase *** this study,a comprehensive geochemical data set(major and trace element,Sr-Nd-Pb isotopes)has been obtained on a new set of fresh harzburgites in order to track the processes recorded by this mantle section and its *** studied harzburgites are low-strain tectonites showing porphyroclastic textures,locally grading into protomylonitic *** exhibit a refractory nature,as attested by the notable absence of primary clinopyroxene,very high Fo content of olivine(91-93 mol.%),high Mg#of orthopyroxene(0.91-0.93)and high Cr#of spinel(0.44-0.71).The harzburgites are characterised by remarkably low Ree concentrations(es)and display"U-shaped"profiles,with steeply sloping HRee(DyN/YbN=0.07-0.16)and fractionated LRee-MRee segments(LaN/SmN=2.1-8.3),in the range of modern fore-arc *** modelling shows that the HRee composition of the harzburgites can be reproduced by multi-stage melting including a first phase of melt depletion in dry conditions(15%fractional melting),followed by hydrous melting in a subduction zone setting(up to 15%-18%).However,melting models fail to explain the enrichments observed for some FMe(***,Sr,Pb),LRee-MRee and *** enrichments,coupled with the frequent occurrence of thin,undeformed films of Al2 O3,and CaO-poor orthopyroxene(Al2O3=0.88-1.53 wt.%,CaO=0.31-0.56 wt.%)and clinopyroxene with low Na2 O(0.03-0.16 wt.%),Al2 O3(0.66-1.35 wt.%)and TiO2(0.04-0.10 wt.%)contents,point to FMe addition during fluid-assisted melting followed by late stage metasomatism most likely operated by subductionrelated melts with a depleted trace element *** isotopic ratios range from unradiogenic to radiogenic(-0.80egatively correlate with Sr isotopes(0.70257≤87Sr/86Sr≤0.70770).Pb isotopes cover a wide range,trendi

effective signal transmission is essential for communication. In environments where signal transmission is highly variable, signalers may utilize complex signals, which incorporate multiple components and modalities, to maintain effective communication. Male Rabidosa rabida wolf spiders produce complex courtship signals, consisting of both visual and seismic components. We test the hypothesis that the complex signaling of R. rabida contributes to male reproductive success in variable signaling environments. We first examine the condition-dependence of foreleg ornamentation （a presumed visual signal） and seismic signal components and find that both may provide potentially redundant information on foraging history. Next, we assessed reproductive success across manipulated signaling environments that varied in the effectiveness of visual and/or seismic signal transmission. In environments where only one signal could be successfully transmitted （e.g., visual or seismic）, pairs were still able to successfully copulate. Additionally, we found that males altered their courtship display depending on the current signaling environment. Specifically, males reduced their use of a visual display component in signaling environments where visual signal transmission was ablated. Incorporating signals in multiple modalities not only enables R. rabida males to maintain copulation success across variable signaling environments, but it also enables males to adjust their composite courtship display to current signaling conditions .

In this study,we provide evidence that oil sands process-affected waters(OSPW)contain factors that activate the antimicrobial and proinflammatory responses of immune ***,using the murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cell line,we establish the bioactivity of two different OSPW samples and their isolated ***,we directly compared the bioactivity of two pilot scale demonstration pit lake(DPL)water samples,which included expressed water from treated tailings(termed the before water capping sample;BWC)as well as an after water capping(AWC)sample consisting of a mixture of expressed water,precipitation,upland runoff,coagulated OSPW and added *** inflammatory(*** activating)bioactivity was associated with the AWC sample and its organic fraction(OF),whereas the BWC sample had reduced bioactivity that was primarily associated with its inorganic fraction(IF).Overall,these results indicate that at non-toxic exposure doses,the RAW 264.7 cell line serves as an acute,sensitive and reliable biosensor for the screening of inflammatory constituents within and among discrete OSPW samples.
