Aim:Small-cell lung cancer(SCLC)disseminates aggressively and may exhibit high chemoresistance and poor survival *** this study,we aimed to investigate a new mechanism of drug resistance for SCLC circulating tumor cells(CTCs).Methods:SCLC CTC cell lines(n=4)which shed cellular fragments(MAT),as demonstrated by light and scanning electron microscopy,are compared to permanent SCLC *** proteins are detected by proteome arrays and the functional impact of MAT is studied using cytotoxicity tests involving cisplatin and ***:The SCLC CTC lines revealed layers of attached cellular fragments with a range of decreasing sizes from intact cells(approximately 12μm)down to small debris(approximately 2μm)which are not detectable in permanent SCLC *** SCLC CTC clusters represent cores of these fragment-coated *** profiling of MAT revealed a protein pattern similar to intact *** tests employing SCLC and SCLC CTC lines with chemotherapeutics used in therapy of SCLC demonstrated an inhibitory activity of MAT on the resulting ***:Generation of cell-associated debris by SCLC CTCs offers protective effects against cytotoxic drugs,representing a novel mechanism allowing survival of SCLC CTCs in patients.

AIM: To investigate the influence of fish oil enriched enteral diet on intestinal tissues taken from Crohn's disease (Cd), ulcerative colitis (UC) and non-inflamed non-IBd control patients in ***: Colonoscopic biopsies from patients with active Cd (n = 4), active UC (n = 7), and non-inflamed non-IBd control patients (n = 4) were incubated (three dilutions of 1:20, 1:10, and 1:5) with Waymouth's culture medium and enteral elemental diet (EO28, SHS, Liverpool, UK) modified in the fatty acid composition with fish oil (EF) in an organ culture system for 24 h. In each experimental set-up, incubation with Waymouth's medium alone as control was included. Tissue viability was assessed by adding bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) to the culture fluid and immunohistochemically staining for BrdU uptake. Cytokine ratio of IL-1ra/IL-1β (low ratio indicative of inflammation) and production of those cytokines as a percentage of medium control were assayed in the culture supernatant. RESULTS: Incubation of Cd-affected tissue with EF (1:20, 1:10, and 1:5) modestly and non-significantly increased IL-1ra/IL-1β ratio as compared with medium control (Cd 39.1±16.1; 26.5±7.8, 47.1±16.8 vs control 13.0±2.2), but incubation of UC-affected tissues increased IL-1ra/IL-1β ratio significantly in all three dilutions (UC 69.1±32.2, P＜0.05; 76.1±36.4, P = 0.05;84.5±37.3, P＜0.02; vs control 10.2±3.7). Incubation of non-inflamed non-IBd control tissue did not increase the IL-1ra/IL-1β ratio in any dilution compared to medium control (69.3±47.0, 54.1±30.6, 79.4±34.0 vs control 76.1±37.3). Average percentage production of IL-1β indexed against medium control was significantly less in UC after EF incubation as compared with Cd (UC 24.0±4.8 vs Cd 51.8±8.1; P＜0.05). Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum Mill) is a staple fruit vegetable widely grown worldwide for its rich nutrients including vitamins, minerals and proteins. In spite of its importance, yield and fruit quality in Buea, Cameroon is quite low compared to other countries. Pests and diseases are responsible for these limitations. Those of high importance are pinworm (Tatu absoluta) and Fusarium wilt respectively. Synthetic chemicals have been used to manage this pest/disease on tomato but this has not been very successful because of high cost and unavailability of these chemicals. Botanicals are known to have anti-microbial properties. 10% Leeks and marigold extracts were applied to tomato plants one week after planting. Five treatments were replicated four times in a randomized complete block. They include a control, a synthetic insecticide, leeks extract, marigold extract, and leeks/marigold extracts. Growth and yield parameters were evaluated and data obtained was analysed by descriptive statistics and ANOVA. Results showed that more tomato plant leaves were recorded in the leeks + marigold treatment (54) which differed significantly (P = 0.05) from the control (45). More fruits were harvested in the leeks + marigold treatment (32) which differed significantly (P = 0.05) from the control (18). Pinworm numbers were significantly higher in control (6) (P = 0.05) than the other treatments. Numerous leaf damage was observed in control (20) which differed significantly (P = 0.05) across treatments. More fruit damage was seen in control (14) and differed significantly (P = 0.05) from the other treatments. The least disease incidence was noted in Leeks + Marigold treatment (27.5%), and the most in control (72.5%) which differed significantly (P = 0.05) across treatments. Fusarium oxysporium and Fusarium semitectum were identified. There was a significant difference in pathogen number in control compared to other treatments. AIM: To assess whether regular Mediterranean diet and regular intake of vegetables may reduce the risk of blindness, cataract, and glaucoma in these type 2 diabetics. · METHOdS: A cross-sectional design was carried out among known black diabetics admitted at the diabetic clinics of Kinshasa, between October 2008 and March 2009. The Mediterranean-style dietary score (MSdPS) was used to characterize a Mediterranean-style dietary pattern in the study population using the Harvard semi quantitative FFQ adapted for Africa. · RESULTS: Five hundred Type 2 diabetic patients were included in this study (48% of males; 40% aged ≥60 years). There was a significant association between blindness, cataract and aging; between blindness (P d physical inactivity; between blindness (Pd high SES, and a very significant association between blindness (P d exposure to sunlight. There was also a significant association between blindness, glaucoma, and male sex. Regular intake of Mediterranean diet, Brassica Rapa, beans, Abelmoschus, Musa acuminata reduced significantly the risk of blindness, cataract and glaucoma. · CONCLUSION: Regular intake of Mediterranean diet, Brassica Rapa, beans, Abelmoschus, and Musa acuminata may significantly reduce the risk of blindness or its major causes among type 2 diabetes mellitus in Africa.
